Margaret 'Penny' Haley

Margaret "Penny" Haley, of Salinas, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at her residence.
She was born icon in New Mexico. She was the owner of Russell Trailer Park. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, traveling, trips to Reno and spending time with her family. She also enjoyed volunteering for skilled nursing facilities.

Survivors: Husband, Maurice Haley of Salinas; daughter, Sandra Snodgrass of Salinas; sisters, Ree Barrett of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Anne Gram of Anaheim; granddaughter, Debora Fink of Salinas; three great-grandchildren; and a longtime friend of 26 years, Paulette Reed of Salinas.

Visitation: Noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 22, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, July 23, at Whitehurst Muller Chapel, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Services: 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.
Burial: Queen of Heaven Mausoleum.

M.C. Clarkson

M.C. Clarkson, 77, of Salinas, died on Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Palo Alto, after a long illness.
He was a retired art director, working at visual information media at Fort Ord for the civil service. He also had worked as art director at Standard Oil of Indiana in Tulsa, Okla.; art director, KSBW-TV in Salinas; artist and planner for the Monterey County Planning Commission; art director for Monterey County Office of Education; illustrator on-the-job-training school for the Army at Ford Ord; crop dusting; wingman at Kathy Landry Air Circus; and co-pilot for Delta Airlines.

He won the Horace Heidt Talent Competition, Southwest Region, in 1950; was a founding member and lead singer of Tulsa Opera; a soloist in many churches throughout the country and hosted a radio program titled 'Clarkson Presents' in Tulsa.

Military: U.S. Army, World War II, flight instructor. Oaklahoma National Guard.

Survivors: wife, Barbara Clarkson of Salinas; sister, Carol Warren of Hartwell, Ga.; brother, Kenneth Clarkson of San Diego; brother-in-law, Stormy Chisler of Salinas; and sister-in-law, Andrea Seastrand of Grover City.

Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, July 23, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: Funeral services 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 24, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Will follow at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Doris E. Wheeler

Doris E. Wheeler, 81, of Salinas, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Fayette City, Pa., and lived in Salinas since 1992. She was an administrator for the Covina Valley Unified School District for 34 years. She graduated from the University of California in California, Pa. And received her master's degree from California State University, Los Angeles.

Memberships: El Gabilan Chapter No. 574 O.E.S., Ankh Court No. 92, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Elks Campers and Phi Beta Kappa.

Survivors: Husband, John Wheeler of Salinas; daughter, Mary Husby of Prunedale; son, John D. Wheeler of Simi Valley; sister, Margaret Householder of Newport News, Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Private family services were held.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

George Wade Upton

George Wade Upton, 84, of Eagle Point, Ore., died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at his home.
He was born icon in Marble City, Okla., and moved to Rogue Valley in 1993 from Galt. He was a designer, welder and builder of mechanized machinery all his life. After his retirement, he worked in baggage and freight movement at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield. His greatest pleasures were farming and nature.

Survivors: Wife, Margaret Upton of Eagle Point, Ore.; daughter, Catherine Fleshman of Eagle Point, Ore.; son, Tom Upton of New Port Richey, Fla.; brothers Paul Upton of Exeter and Carnell Upton of Weiser, Idaho; and two great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives Crematory. 835 B Alder Creek Dr., Medford, Ore. 97504.

Irineo Junior Aldama

Irineo Junior Aldama, 18, of Salinas, Wednesday, July 25, 2001, in Castroville in an automobile accident.
He was a lifelong resident of Salinas.

Survivors: Mother, Yolanda Lomeli of Salinas; father, Irineo Aldama of Lodi; sisters, Andrea Mercado and Arlene, both of Lodi, Alicia and Anaeloisa Aldama, both of Salinas; grandmother, Mariana Lomeli of Salinas; grandfather, Alberto Aldama of Mexico; girlfriend, Roxanna Regalado of Salinas; and two nieces.

Visitation: From 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday, July 29, and from 1 to 9 p.m., Monday, July 30, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary-Vigil: 6 p.m., Monday, July 30 at the Mortuary Chapel.

Services: Friends and family may gather at the Mortuary Chapel on Tuesday, July 31 at 9 a.m. for final visitation rites, then follow in procession to Christ the King Church for the celebration of the funeral Mass beginning at 10 a.m.

Disposition: The Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Salinas.

Frank Ashby

Frank Ashby, 71, of Salinas, died unexpectedly Friday, July 27, 2001, at his home.
He was born icon in Clayton, N.M., and lived in Salinas for 56 years. He was a fork lift operator, retiring from Champion International after 30 years.

Military service: Air Force for four years during the Korean War.

Memberships: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7895 of Salinas and American Legion Post 589 of Salinas.

Survivors: wife, Jessie Ashby of Salinas; daughter, Sharon Corey of Salinas; son, Thomas Moss of San Jose; brother, James W. Ashby of Salinas; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at VFW Post No. 7895, 242 Williams Road, Salinas.

Placement of ashes: San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Richard E. Watts

Richard E. Watts, 70, of Salinas, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center in Salinas following an illness.
He was born icon in Cresco, Iowa, and lived in Salinas for 20 years. He was a soldier.

Military service: U.S. Army.

Memberships: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7895, the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 101, and the American Legion 589, all in Salinas.

Survivors: Daughters, Judy Woldum of Fullerton and Ellen Lenk of Spanaway, Wash.; sons, Jeff Watts of Tacoma, Wash., and Pat Watts and Mike Watts, both of Puyallup, Wash.,; brothers, William Watts and Donald Watts, both of Iowa, and Art Watts of Illinois; sisters, Louise Sweaney and Viola Kerr, both of Iowa, and Mildred Olson of Illinois; and nine grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services will be 3 p.m., Friday, August 3, at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7895, Williams Road, Salinas.

Cremation: Healey Crematory Co, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Placement of ashes: San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

Zelda Corbari

Zelda Corbari, 86, of Salinas, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at her daughter's home in Concord after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Colorado Springs, Colo., and lived in Salinas for 65 years. She was a homemaker and before retiring was a salesperson for Stanley Home Products. She was the secretary for the Older American Advisory Council during the 1980s and was the founder of the Senior Center Foundation during the 1980s, which became recognized in June 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Corbari, in 1994.

Memberships: Monterey Bay Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Monterey County Area Agency on Aging, Foster Grandparents, American Association of Retired Persons, Seventh Day Adventist Church and Democratic party.

Survivors: Daughters, Lenora Kraul of Morgan Hill and Sharon McLafferty of Concord; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at Salinas Community Center, Santa Lucia Room, 940 N. Main St., Salinas.

Randy Greer

Randy Greer, 49, of Prunedale, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born icon in Norfolk, Va., and lived in the Prunedale area for 27 years. He was a heavy equipment operator with Granite Construction. He was an avid sports fan.

Memberships: San Benito Lodge No. 211 Free and Accepted Masons, Monterey Peninsula Corvette Club and Sons of the American Legion.

Survivors: Wife, Rhonda Greer of Prunedale; sons, Eric Greer of Austin, Texas, and Jerry Armstrong of Emmett, Idaho; daughter, Heather Greer of Napa; father, Cecil Greer of Clintwood, Va.; sister, Lyn Louthen of Aptos; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Cremation: Has been held.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, 1184 Monroe St. Suite 1, Salinas.

Elicio M. Martinez

Elicio M. Martinez, 81, of Salinas, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Skyline Convalescent Hospital after an illness.
He was born icon in Tinnie, N.M., and lived in Salinas for two years. He was a general laborer with Tot Sadler. He was preceded in death by his wife, Daria Martinez, in 1991.

Military services: U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific.

Survivors: Daughters, Dorothy Losbya of Marfa, Texas, Rosa Florez of Watsonville and Gloria Herrera of Salinas; sons, Tony Martinez of Castroville, Juan Martinez of Salinas and Elicio Martinez Jr. of Roswell, N.M.; sister, Rachel Sedillo of Roswell, N.M.; 27 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services: Roswell, N.M.

Burial: South Park Cemetery, Roswell.

Arrangements: Ballard's Funeral Home.

E. Rosecella Cummings

E. Rosecella Cummings, 99, of Soledad, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Eden Valley Care Center.
She was born icon in Barrett, Minn., and lived in Reno from 1937 to 1996 before moving to Soledad. She was a registered nurse and enjoyed her involvement with the Reno Humane Society and her hobbies raising dogs and cats, gardening and restoring antiques. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cummings, in 1964. He was chief of detectives for the Reno Police Department.

Survivors: Niece, Donna Gutierrez of Salinas; and grandnieces and grandnephews.

Services and placement of ashes: Later date at Mount View Cemetery.

Cremation: Has been held.

Memorials: Reno Humane Society or donor's favorite charity.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Olivia Martin

Olivia Martin, 79, of Marina, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after an illness.
She was born icon in Fall River, Mass., and lived in Marina for eight years. She was the co-owner and operator of Martin Upholstery in Chico.

Memberships: St. Jude's Parish.

Survivors: Husband, Henry J. Martin Sr. of Marina; sons, Henry J. Martin Jr. of Chico, Glenn A. Martin of Red Bluff and Wayne B. Martin of Marina; sisters, Jean Nobre, Hilda Days and Helen Couto, all of Massachusetts; brother, Antone Rapoza of Massachusetts; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Family services will be held in Chico.

Cremation: Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Placement of ashes: Glen Oaks Memorial Park, Chico.
