Joan Bettye Wharton, 82, of Salinas, died Aug. 2, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following an illness.
She lived in Salinas for 55 years. She was a bus driver for Monterey County schools.

Survivor: Son, James Fett of Marion, Ind.

Services: At her request, none will be held.

Cremation: Performed by Healey Crematory Co. of Salinas.

Melecio Lamento Estrada

Melecio Lamento Estrada, 74, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at his home in Salinas of cancer.
He was born icon in Januiay in the Philippines and lived in Salinas for 42 years. He was a property manager for 29 years. He enjoyed cooking and loved to fish.

Military Services: U.S. Army for 20 years. Did two tours during the Korean War; survivor of the Battle of Pork Chop Hill; two tours in Vietnam. He earned three Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart, U.N. Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Expert Badge with rifle bar.

Survivors: Wife, Lilli Estrada of Salinas; son, George Estrada of Aromas; son-in-law Roy Guerrero of Prunedale; daughters, Vera Gruber of Salinas and Anita Guerrero of Prunedale; daughter-in-law, Petra Estrada of Aromas; grandsons, Dominic Gruber, Eric Gruber and Justice Guerrero; granddaughters, Erin Estrada and Jillian Estrada; great-granddaughter, Kiana Gruber.

Visitation: From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2,4 at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at the funeral chapel.

Inurnment: Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Patricia Skefich

Patricia Skefich, 63, of Salinas, died of cancer Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Oakland and lived in Salinas for 27 years. She was a family consultant and supervisor with Del Mar Caregiver Resource Center for 12 years. She received a master's of social work degree from San Jose State University in 1992. She loved the art of photography including darkroom technique and custom printing, working professionally as a portrait photographer at the Emporium in Salinas and later owning her own studio. She was energetic in advocating the needs of all caregivers with whom she worked.

Survivors: Husband, Silvio Skefich of Salinas; son, Matthew (Rosalie) Skefich of Goleta; daughter, Sylvia Skefich, D.C., of San Lorenzo; brother, Steven (Laura) Christianson of White Plains, N.Y.; sister, Adrienne Silva of Ogden, Utah; and many nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life: 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, at Santa Lucia Room, Salinas Community Center, 940 N. Main St., Salinas.

Placement of ashes: Scattered at sea at a later date.

Memorials: Del Mar Caregiver Resource Center, 40 Central Ave., Salinas 93901 or Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 4760, Salinas, 93912-4760.

Alice R. Fiske

Alice R. Fiske, 88, of Marysville, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey after a lengthy illness resulting from a stroke.
She was born icon in Hagerstown, Md., and lived in Monterey County during her final illness. She was a homemaker for 58 years. She enjoyed gardening and she and her husband were rice farmers in the Marysville area for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James B. Fiske, in January 1993, and sister, Dana Parker.

Memberships: In her younger years she was a member of League of Women Voters and Fortnightly, a women's literary group.

Survivors: Sons, Brooks M. Fiske of Salinas; Preston Fiske of Ridgewood, N.J., and Andrew Fiske of Winnamucca, Nev.; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial services 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. John's Episcopal Church, Marysville.

Placement of ashes: Following service at Sierra View Memorial Park, Olivehurst.

Memorials: St. John's Episcopal Church, Marysville.

Arrangements: Whitehurst Muller Funeral Service, East Alisal Street and Pajaro Street, Salinas.

Santiago 'Chago' Herrera

Santiago "Chago" Herrera, 64, of Seaside, died Thursday, Aug. 23, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula after a bicycle accident.
He was born icon in Yucuaiquin, El Salvador, and lived in Monterey County for five months. He was self-employed as a farmer in El Salvador and was a restaurant worker in the United States. He liked to ride his bicycle.

Memberships: Catholic Church.

Survivors: Wife, Carmen Mendoza Herrera of El Salvador; sons, Luis Mendoza of Marina and Andres Herrera of Monterey; daughters, Vilma Araceli Herrera of El Salvador, and Marys Consuelo Herrera and Lorena del Carmen Herrera, both of Seaside; and 10 grandchildren.

Visitation: From 2 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 27, at Chapel of Seaside, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Services and burial: El Salvador.

Relina Puppo Ashton

Relina Puppo Ashton, 83, of Menlo Park, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in Menlo Park.
She was born icon in Stockton and was a longtime resident of Salinas. She was a schoolteacher at Sanborn School and Spreckels School.

Survivors: Daughters, Christina Ashton and Julie Ashton Gray; son-in-law, William R. Gray; sister, Marie Puppo; and grandchildren, John Gray, Michael Gray and Billy Gray.

Visitation: 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 El Camino Real W., Mountain View.

Vigil service: 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, Church of the Nativity, 210 Oak Grove Ave., Menlo Park.

Entombment: Following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.

Memorials: Dominican University of San Rafael, 50 Acacia Ave., San Rafael 94901-2298.

Lou M. Chappell

Lou M. Chappell, 77, of Salinas, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Salinas Valley Me-morial Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born icon in Spreckels and was a lifelong resident of Salinas. She was a salesperson with Macy's before retiring. She was a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul and was active in many community organizations, especially those assisting the elderly.

Memberships: Catholic Daughters, Friendship Club, Angela An-gels, Women Aglow and Madonna del Sasso Catholic Church.

Survivors: Sons, Dennis Cepello of King City and Stacy Cepello of Chico; daughter, Kathy Vosti of Salinas; sister, Carmen Baca of Salinas; brothers, Bob Moran and Manuel Moran, both of Freedom; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Visitation: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Vigil service: 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas.

Burial: Following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: Donor's favorite charity.

Martha Lopez

Martha Lopez, 53, of Salinas, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care and Rehabilitation Center in Salinas, following a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Michoacan, Mexico, and lived in Salinas for 25 years. She was a former field laborer.

Memberships: Teamsters un-ion, Local 890.

Survivors: Daughters, Lucila Chavez of Salinas, and Lorena Montiel and Noemi Montiel, both of Salinas; son, Merced Montiel of Salinas; sisters, Maria T. Lopez of Salinas and Elvira Lopez of Mexico; brothers, Jose Lopez and Austreberto Lopez, both of Arkansas, and Javier Lopez of Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, May 28, at Healey Mortuary, 450 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary-Vigil: Rosary at 7:30 p.m., today, May 28, at mortuary chapel.

Services: Friends and family may gather at noon Tuesday, May 29, at the mortuary chapel for final visitation rites, then follow in procession to St. Mary of the Nativity Church for a celebration of the funeral mass beginning at 1 p.m.

Burial: Following in the Garden of Memories Cemetery, Salinas.

Bremond 'Bre' Alberta Morash

Bremond "Bre" Alberta Morash, 91, of Salinas, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at her home.
She was born icon in Jonesboro, Ark., lived in Los Angeles, in Ridgecrest from 1951 to 1978, in Santa Cruz from 1978 to 1999 and then moved to Salinas. She was a secretary for more than 25 years with Kern County School District. During her childhood in Silverado, N.M., she experienced riding the wild burros. She spent many hours in her eggery class creating intricate eggs and also enjoyed crochet, cross-stitch and knitting and will be remembered for her love of angels and cats. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Morash, in January 1981.

Memberships: E.C.W. at St. John The Baptist Episcopal Church and a 20-year volunteer for the church bulletin office.

Survivors: Children, Jack (Winona) Morash and Judy (David) Papineau; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation: From 4 to 8 p.m. today, July 6, at Norman's Family Chapel, 3620 Soquel Drive, Soquel.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, at St. John The Baptist Episcopal Church, 216 Oakland Ave., Capitola.

Burial: Oakwood Memorial Park, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz.

Memorials: Hospice or SPCA or donor's favorite charity.

Thomas G. Milloway

Thomas G. Milloway, 79, of Salinas, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born icon in Gurdon, Ark., and lived in Salinas since 1956. He was a housing developer for Earl W. Smith Co. for many years. Following his retirement from that company, he developed properties on his own. He enjoyed bird hunting.

Memberships: St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church of Salinas and Salinas Elks Lodge No. 614.

Survivors: Wife, Rose of Salinas; sons, Tom Milloway of Sacramento and Greg Milloway of Salinas; sisters, Bobbye Tooms of Gurdon, Ark., and LaVerne Roland of Hardy, Ark.; brothers, James Milloway of Mountain Home, Ark., and Bill Milloway of Arkadelphia, Ark.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Today, Aug. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22, at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Salinas.

Entombment: Will follow at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: American Heart Association, 1514 Moffett St., Suite A, Salinas 93905-3342.

Eva E. Lippincott

Eva E. Lippincott, 75, of Salinas, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Sunridge Nursing Home following a short illness.
She was born icon in Porterville and was a homemaker. She coached Little League in Seaside from 1964-1969. She was a great cook and a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors: Son, Brian Lippincott of Salinas; daughter, Glenda Lazzeroni of Salinas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: At her request, no services were held.

Inurnment: Private cremation took place at the Soquel Crematory.

Hugo H. Pia

Hugo H. Pia, 84, of Salinas, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was a lifetime resident of Salinas. He and his brother, Fred, were proprietors of Pia's Bi Rite grocery store. He was a 1935 graduate of Salinas High School and is on the all-time Salinas football team. He was an avid golfer and played for many years. He loved baseball and football. He was a loved, admired and respected patriarch of his family and will live on in their hearts.

Military Service: U.S. Army during World War II, an honor guard for Gen. Douglas McArthur in Japan.

Memberships: Douglas McArthur Honor Guard Association, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Salinas High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Survivors: Wife, Virginia Pia of Salinas; daughter, Diana Damonte of Berkeley; son, David Pia of Danville; brother, Robert Pia of Salinas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation: From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Vigil: 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at the funeral chapel.

Services: 9:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 22 Stone St., Salinas.

Entombment: Will follow at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Memorials: American Heart Association, 1514 Moffet St., Suite A, Salinas 93905-3342.
