Ivan 'JR' Bordelon Jr.

Ivan "JR" Bordelon Jr., 46, of Salinas, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, in Salinas in a motorcycle accident.
He was born icon in San Francisco and lived in Monterey County for 18 years. He was a postal worker for the past five years in Watsonville and worked for many years at the Seaside Automall. He attended St. Francis Xavier Church in Seaside. He liked to ride his motorcycle and fly kites. He loved blues and jazz and attended the Monterey festivals each year. He also liked video games and his favorite was PlayStation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Lois Bordelon.

Military service: 16 years of service in the U.S. Army.

Survivors: Wife, JoAnn Bordelon of Salinas; daughters, Katrina Bordelon and Kimberly Bordelon, both of Salinas; sisters, Michelle Elizabeth Camp of Antioch, Yovonne Bordelon of Modesto and Brandy Bordelon of Los Angeles; and brother, Kevin Drew Bordelon of Salinas.

Visitation: From 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Chapel of Seaside, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Rosary: 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 15, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 1475 La Salle Ave., Seaside.

Jacquelyne Louise (Allen) Carter

Jacquelyne Louise (Allen) Carter, 50, of Fresno, died of natural causes Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in Fresno.
She was born icon in Los Angeles and lived in Seaside for 49 years and in Fresno for one year. She was a homemaker. She graduated from Seaside High School in 1969 and from California State University, Sacramento. She was a warm, friendly and loving person who lived her life to its fullest. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lonnie and Bernice Allen.

Memberships: First Baptist Church of Pacific Grove.

Survivors: Son, Leo Martinez Carter of Marina; daughter, Vivian Loretta Miller of Houston, Texas; sister, Nehwanda Washington of Owings Mills, Md.; brothers, Le Artis Allen of Columbus, Ga., and Trevino Allen of Atlanta; two grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services: Memorial services noon Saturday, Oct. 13, at Chapel of Seaside Funeral Directors, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Daisy Cuffney

Daisy Cuffney, 78, of Grants Pass, Ore., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at her home.
She was born icon in Leesville, La., and lived in Salinas in 1943 and then again from 1962 to 1995 when she moved to Oregon. She was a Pink Lady volunteer at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital and a volunteer and helped with fundraising with the American Heart Association and other organizations. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, William P. Cuffney, in 1999.

Memberships: Sacred Heart parish.

Survivors: Sons, Michael Cuffney of Salinas and Paul Kevin Cuffney of Grants Pass; daughters, Pat Maurer of Castro Valley and Deborah Murphy of Kellogg, Idaho; siblings, Jack Shell of Fort Smith, Ark., Gene Shell of Kansas City, Mo., and Gladys Tack of Salinas; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: No services planned.

Memorials: American Heart Association, 1425 Irving, Suite 100, Portland, Ore. 97232.

Arrangements: Central Valley Cremation and Funeral Care, 800 S. Front St., Central Point, Ore.

Lucille 'Pat' M. Hargis

Lucille "Pat" M. Hargis, 85, of Sprague River, Ore., died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Klamath Falls, Ore.
She was born icon in Pauls Valley, Okla., and lived in Salinas and Watsonville for more than 50 years. She moved to Oregon two years ago to be near her daughter. She was a housekeeper at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital for more than 20 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Hargis, in 1969.

Survivors: Daughter, Mary Rabe of Sprague River; sons, Robert Hargis of Watsonville and Jack Hargis of Las Vegas; brother, Joe Hines of Oklahoma; sisters, Retha Bizzini and Betty June Taylor, both of Denver, and Effie Mays of Oklahoma; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation: 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 at Whitehurst Muller Chapel, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15 at the chapel.

Internment: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Augustine Sandoval

Augustine Sandoval, 43, of Salinas, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. He was a welder with Valley Tank and Manufacturing. He graduated from Alisal High School in 1976. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rachel Sandoval.

Memberships: Sun Street Center.

Survivors: Companion, Verenia Cox of Salinas; daughter, Tanya Sandoval of Salinas; father, Joseph Sandoval of Mexico; brothers, Steven Sandoval of Merced, Jacob Sandoval and Moses Sandoval, both of San Diego, and Angel Esquer of Oregon; sisters, Elizabeth Gaona, Renee Sandoval and Patricia Camacho, all of San Diego, Rachel Sandoval of Salinas and Pamela Esquer of Oregon; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 12, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Memorials: Donor's favorite charity.

John 'J.L.' Parker

John "J.L." Parker, 86, of Russellville, Ariz., died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Legacy Lodge Nursing Home in Russellville. He was born icon in Center Valley Community, Ariz., and was a former resident of Salinas. He worked for 37 years as an automotive mechanic with various Chrysler dealerships in California.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael D. Parker, granddaughter, Michelle Parker, six brothers and two sisters.

Memberships: Boulder Avenue Christian Church and a lifetime member of the Salinas Bowman's Club.

Survivors: Wife Yvonne Betty Parker of Russellville; brothers Woodrow Parker and W.D. "Bill" (Louise) Parker, both of Russellville; daughter-in-law Roberta Parker-Rose of Salinas; granddaughters, Andrea Parker-Nunez of Ithaca, N.Y., and Shawna Parker of Salinas; grandson Michael Parker of Salinas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: Friday in Russellville.

Burial: Rest Haven Memorial Park in Russellville.

James Farmer

James Farmer, 88, of Watsonville, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Salinas.
He was born icon in Shelbyville, Tenn., and lived in California most of his life. He worked for many years in his own air-conditioning business. After retiring, he moved to a ranch in Watsonville. His hobbies included flying his own plane, boxing, fishing, hunting, surfing and traveling.

Services: Private.

Memorials: Donors may send memorials to their favorite charity.

Arrangements: Oak Hill Funeral Home, Memorial Park and Flower Shop, 300 Curtner Ave., San Jose.

Cornelia Velez Nunez

Cornelia Velez Nunez, 87, of Salinas, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center in Salinas following a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Jalisco, Mexico, and lived in Salinas for six years. She was a homemaker.

Survivors: Sister-in-law, Maria de Jesus Ortiz of Salinas; nieces, Maria Velez, Maria Guadalupe Painter, Rosario Velez, Rafaela Velez, all of Salinas, and Anna Isabel Ramirez of Fremont; nephews Paulino Velez, Enrique Velez, Jose Asencion Velez and Jose Antonio Velez, all of Salinas.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, Oct. 2, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. today, Oct. 2 at the mortuary chapel.

Services: Funeral rites at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the mortuary chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1702 Second Ave., Salinas.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Judith Ann Appel

Judith Ann Appel, 62, of La Quinta, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2001, in La Quinta.
She was born icon in Hollywood and was an interior designer who worked on several projects throughout Monterey County, including Salinas Care Center, Katherine Hospital in Salinas, Nestle-Hills Brothers Corporate House in Pebble Beach, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Windfall Restaurant in Salinas. She owned her own firm, Self Decorating Den.

Memberships: Salinas/Steinbeck Rotary Club, Salinas Chamber of Commerce and the Women's Professional Network in Carmel.

Survivors: Daughter, Elizabeth Susanne Appel, and sister, Linda Smith of La Quinta.

Services: Were held Monday in Cathedral City.

Burial: Desert Memorial Park, Cathedral City.

Memorials: American Cancer Society.

Arrangements: Palm Springs Mortuary, 69855 E. Ramon Road, Cathedral City.

Rudy R. Blanco

Rudy R. Blanco, 44, of Gonzales, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, in Gonzales.
He was born icon in Phoenix and worked as a seed coder with Asgrow Seed Co. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening and was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs football team.

He was preceded in death by his father, Josue Blanco, in 1989.

Survivors: Mother, Victoria Blanco of Gonzales; daughter, Krystal Blanco of Gonzales; brothers, Joe Blanco, Richard Blanco and Henry Blanco, all of Gonzales; sister Virginia Gallegos of Gonzales; lifetime friend David Maturino of Gonzales; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 2, at St. Theodore's Catholic Church, 116 S. Belden St., Gonzales.

Services: Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at St. Theodore's. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the church.

Burial: Gonzales District Cemetery.

Verna Vivian Hess

Verna Vivian Hess, 86, of Salinas, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
She was born icon in Canada and lived in Tacoma, Wash., for many years and in Salinas for one year. She was the head cook for the Tacoma Public School District for 25 years and retired in 1977.

Survivors: Daughters, Carol Peterson of Vacaville and Holly Hess of Salinas; son, Donald J. Hess of Dallas; stepson, Dale Burrows of Penticton, Canada; sister, Mildred Robinson of Seattle; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at Mountain View Cemetery, Tacoma.

Memorials: American Heart Association; Central Mission Trails Chapter, 1514 Moffett St., Suite A, Salinas 93905-3342.

Local arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Michael S. Gutierrez

Michael S. Gutierrez, 81, of Spreckels, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Clairmont and lived in Spreckels for 74 years. He was a sugar boiler for 46 years with Spreckels Sugar Co. He attended Spreckels School and Salinas High School. He enjoyed early Army reunions throughout the country, barbecue for family and friends, working on his yard and involvement with St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spreckels.

Military service: During World War II he was assigned to the 6th Armored Division under Gen. George S. Patton and was involved in heavy combat action on D-Day at the Normandy Invasion and at the Battle of the Bulge. He also participated in the liberation of the concentration camp at Buchenwald. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for wounds he received holding a position while under enemy fire as his unit advanced to a safer area. He also served as Patton's staff duty driver.

Memberships: Member and head usher at St. Joseph's Church, past president Legion of Mary, Knights of Columbus, and involved with the Cursillo Christianity movement.

Survivors: Wife of 58 years, Trine C. Gutierrez of Spreckels; sons, Michael C. Gutierrez Jr. of Redding, and Robert D. Gutierrez and Richard D. Gutierrez, both of Spreckels; daughter, Teresa Gutierrez of Bay Point; brother, Frank Gutierrez of Salinas; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Home, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Vigil: 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10 a.m. Friday, May 4, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Spreckels Boulevard and Railroad Avenue, Spreckels.

Burial: Following with military honors at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas.

Memorials: Visiting Nurse Association, 957 A Blanco Circle, Salinas 93901.
