Warren Garrett Gipe
Warren Garrett Gipe, 80, of Grass Valley, died of complications from surgery Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at University of California, Davis, Medical Center in Sacramento.
He was born
in Monte Vista, Colo., moved to Salinas at an early age with his parents and moved to Grass Valley from Monterey. He was a funeral director and with his partner, Francis Varozza, owned Mission Mortuary in Monterey for more than 30 years before retiring in 1972. He attended local schools in Salinas, graduated from Salinas High School in 1939 and Salinas Junior College (now Hartnell College) in 1941. He was a letterman in basketball at both schools. He later graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science. He enjoyed fishing and golf.
Memberships: Past master of Monterey Masonic Lodge 217, past exalted ruler of Monterey Elk Lodge 1285, past president of Monterey Rotary Club, former board member of YMCA and chairman of Urban Renewal Agency.
Survivors: Wife, Barbara Gipe of Grass Valley; daughters, Carolyn Corce of Whidbey, Wash., and Gwen Diregolo of Sacramento; son, Garrett Gipe of Chico; and two grandchildren.
Services: Memorial services at a later date.
Cremation: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas, followed by placement of ashes in the family plot.

Stuart Spencer Stratton
ROYAL OAKS
Stuart Spencer Stratton, 35, of Royal Oaks, died instantly Friday, Oct. 19, while participating in a motorcycle race at Daytona International Speedway.
His childhood was spent in Santa Barbara and Vancouver, Wash. He was a senior pilot and technician of a remotely operated vehicle at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, piloting Ventana. He most recently piloted the vessel as it reached, for the first time, its design depth limit of 1,850 meters.
He loved the ocean from his earliest years. He was an Eagle Scout and was profiled last year in Boys Life magazine for his work with ROVs and deep-sea exploration. His other passion was the challenge and competition of motorcycle racing with the nation's top riders.
He was a graduate of Santa Barbara Community College in marine tech. Before coming to MBARI in August 1997, he had more than 12 years experience in the commercial ROV and diving field.
Survivors: Mother, Marie Robertson of Vancouver; and father, Bruce Stratton of Montecito.
Services: Memorial services 11 a.m. today, Oct. 24, at Davis Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville, and noon Saturday, Oct. 27, at Laguna Seca Raceway Amphitheater, Monterey.
Burial: In Washington state.
Dora Suniga
GREENFIELD
Dora Suniga, 51, of Greenfield, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at her home.
She was born
May 15, 1950, in California and was self-employed as a caregiver. She enjoyed cooking and reading. She was a very compassionate person and would always help people in need. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard Suniga, and sister, Elizabeth Suniga.
Survivors: Son, Eddie Pajas of Soledad; daughter, Tricia Treadwell of Greenfield; parents, Victor and Ruth Suniga of Greenfield; brothers, Johnny Gines of Delano, Lupe Suniga of Gonzales and Michael Suniga and Joseph Suniga, both of Greenfield; sisters, Linda Gallardo of Greenfield and Virginia Wolf of Green River, Wyo.; and six grandchildren.
Services: Memorial services 6 p.m. today, Oct. 24, at Whitehurst Terry Funeral Chapel., 395 East St., Soledad.
Elias Lujan
Elias Lujan, 50, of Salinas, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born
in San Jose and lived in Salinas for 33 years. He was self-employed as a tree surgeon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Lucy Lujan.
Survivors: Sisters, Rebecca Ketler of Reno, Nev., and Sarah Murphy of Ramona; brothers, Larry Lujan, Moses Lujan, Albino Lujan, Eliseo Lujan, Daniel Lujan and Richard Lujan, all of Salinas, Sam Lujan of Modesto, David Lujan of Tulare and Art Lujan of Santa Clara; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mariano C. Orozco
Mariano C. Orozco, 71, of Salinas, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Jungapeo, Michoac·n, Mexico, and lived in Salinas for 22 years. He was a field laborer with Bud of California.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Carlos Orozco.
Survivors: Wife, Graciela Ramirez of Salinas; son, Martin Mariano Orozco of Salinas; daughters, Martha Lilia Orozco of Mexico, and Graciela Flores, Yolanda Villalobos, Alejandra Orozco, Guadalupe Orozco, Liliana Orozco and Maria Isabel Orozco, all of Salinas; 25 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

James William Spear
James William Spear, 47, of Seaside, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Hospice House in Monterey.
He was born
in Japan and lived in Ontario for most of his later years. He was an aircraft electrician with Lockheed/McDonald Douglas for more than 20 years. His hobbies were electrical work, restoration of old cars, especially Mustangs, and collecting comic books and cards. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene Spear.
Military service: U.S. Marine Corps from 1972 to 1978, when he was honorably discharged.
Survivors: Son, James C. Spear of Lancaster; father, Thedore Spear of Seaside; mother, Hisako Spear of Seaside; and brothers, John Spear of Seaside and Joseph Spear of Texas.
Services: Graveside service Friday, Nov. 2, at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Frank Farfan Triano
Frank Farfan Triano, 87, of Spreckels, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center after a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Santa Clara, grew up in Redwood City and lived in Spreckels for 60 years. He was retired from Spreckels Sugar Co. following 46 years of work. His interests included gardening at his home, which he took great pride in. He was a Ham radio operator with the handle "Pappy."
Military service: He was an Army infantryman in World War II, serving in Europe, where he fought in Anzio, Rome, Arno River, North Apennines, the Po Valley and in Yugoslavia. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Battle Stars and the Bronze Star.
Memberships: Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6849, charter member, past president and last surviving charter member of Salinas Trailer club and 50-year member of Salinas Masonic Lodge No. 204.
Survivors: Wife of 65 years, Elsie Jane Triano of Spreckels; brother, Joseph F. Triano of Salinas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Catherine Clare Currivan O'Boyle
Catherine Clare Currivan O'Boyle of Salinas died of stomach cancer Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
She was born
in San Francisco, where she lived for 34 years, and lived in Salinas for 26 years. She was office manager of the Panetta Institute at California State University, Monterey Bay, and formerly administrative assistant of the Salinas office of state Sen. Henry Mello for 16 years. She received her California Secondary Teaching Credential from the University of San Francisco, her bachelor of fine art's degree from Barat College in Lake Forest, Ill., and was a graduate of Saint Rose Academy. She will be remembered as a dedicated volunteer for Democratic candidates and causes for more than 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Currivan.
Memberships: Former chair of the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee, member of the State Democratic Executive Board, delegate to Democratic National Conventions, former president of the Democratic Women's Club, former board member of Sun Street Centers, Natividad Medical Center Foundation, Monterey College of Law, Visiting Nurse Association, Alliance on Aging, Citizens Advisory Committee for Soledad Prison, North Monterey County 101 Bypass Committee and a member of countless other organizations.

Enos A. Escher
Enos A. Escher, 72, of Soledad, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at his son's home in Paonia, Colo.
He was born
in Salinas and lived in Soledad for 48 years. He was a retired supervisor with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. He enjoyed helping friends with cattle and hunting.
Military service: U.S. Army in the Korean War.
Memberships: Monterey County Swiss American Club, American Legion Post 32 and Our Lady of Solitude Catholic Church.

John Leslie Henry
John Leslie Henry, 67, of Copperopolis, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare-Sonora.
He was born
in Clinton, Okla., lived in Copperopolis for two years and was a former resident of Salinas. He was a firefighter with the Salinas City Fire Department for 18 years.
Military service: U.S. Navy in the Korean War.
Memberships: American Legion Post 589 Salinas.

Earl S. Pykett Jr., 62, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born
in Chicago and lived in Salinas for 12 years. He was self-employed as an insurance salesman. He enjoyed swimming at the YMCA.

Survivors: Daughter, Korey Seegmiller of Milpitas; son, Gregory Pykett of Campbell; and companion, Ann Cooper of Salinas.
