Garland John Worden
Garland John Worden, 46, of Hollister, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Stanford Medical Center after being hit by a car.
He was born
in Merced, lived in Salinas for 25 years and in Hollister for 15 years. He was a supervisor with Pacific Coast Producers. He was a 1973 graduate of Palma High School and 1978 graduate of California State University, Chico.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Anna Silveria and Garland and Nita Worden.
Memberships: Arnold Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus and the Jaycees of Hollister.
Survivors: Wife, Martha Worden of Hollister; daughter, Renelle Navarro of Grand Prairie, Texas; son, Ryan Worden of Aptos; stepsons, Victor Meza and Jose Meza, both of Hollister; parents, Victor and Mary Ann Worden of Salinas; sisters, Edwina Worden of Hollister, Theresa Rainey of Tulare and Charlotte Theil of Salinas; brothers, James Worden and Steven Worden, both of Salinas, and Victor Worden II of Salinas; grandchildren, Maleena Navarro, Mariah Navarro and Christian Navarro, all of Grand Prairie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services: Final visitation rites at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, followed by procession to St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1702 Second Ave., Salinas, for the funeral Mass at 2 p.m.

Jesse Lee James Sr.
Jesse Lee James Sr., 76, of Upper Lake, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001, at his home.
He was born
in Gheen, Minn., and lived in Salinas from 1949 to 1989, when he moved to Upper Lake. He worked for Rossi Masonry in Salinas for approximately 30 years until his retirement in 1980. He loved working with his hands doing masonry and wielding projects and built many fireplaces and barbecue pits for family and friends. He recently completed reconstruction of a jeep and loved driving it on his son's ranch. He always had a joke and a smile and loved to tease his grandchildren and neighborhood children. His happiest times were in helping his son Jesse with projects and visiting with his friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline, in 1998, parents, Reuben and Queeto James, brothers, Maitland, Don, Roger, Jack and Ace, and sisters, Helen and Betty.
Military service: U.S. Navy as a fireman in the boiler room aboard the escort carrier U.S.S. Sitkoh Bay during World War II.
Memberships: Vice president of the Laborers' Union Local 297 in Salinas from 1959 to 1980, American Legion Post 764, Lucerne.

Fay I. Franscioni
Fay I. Franscioni, 75, of Greenfield, died of natural causes Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Bitterwater and lived in Greenfield. She was a homemaker. She taught American Red Cross swim lessons for many years. She loved her home and family and enjoyed working at Greenfield True Value Mercantile.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Charlie, Claire, Lloyd, Jack and Joe Schmidt and sisters, Grace Bray, Alice Bengard and Margaret Carroll.
Memberships: Former member of American Legion Auxiliary and Holy Trinity Altar Society.

Wayne M. Scott
Wayne M. Scott, 73, of Salinas, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Tulare and lived in Salinas for 60 years. He worked for Pacific Telephone Company for 35 years and retired as a manager. He graduated from Salinas High School in 1946. His hobbies included camping and boating.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Ella Scott.

Veronica Moya, 28, of Salinas, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Goleta Valley Cottage Hospital after an illness.
She was born
in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. She was a baby sitter.

Bettye 'Valerie' Harden
Bettye "Valerie" Harden, 76, of Carmichael, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, in Carmichael after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in St. Louis and was a former area resident. She was a travel counselor with American Automobile Association before her marriage. She was a gifted and talented writer, leaving a legacy of poetry, and was known for her generosity of spirit, her beauty and words of wisdom.
Survivors: Daughter, Leslie (Gordon) Harper; brother, Burton Hal Tischer; and grandchildren, Jessica Harper, Sydney Harper and Miles Harper.

Warren L. Hurst
Warren L. Hurst, 77, of Salinas, died Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at SunRidge Rehab and Care Center in Salinas following a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Los Angeles and lived in Salinas for 33 years. He was a retired purchasing agent with the U.S. government. Following his retirement from the military, he served as a professional with the Boy Scouts of America in Stockton. He graduated from Herbert Hoover High School and his hobbies included fishing, hunting and gardening. He attended San Diego State Teacher's College for two years following his military service and met his wife while at school.
Military service: Joined the Marine Corps at 19 and served throughout the South Pacific, until peace was declared, and served in the U.S. Army, attending Officer's Candidate School. He was commissioned a second lieutenant and served in the Korean War and Vietnam. He was involved in the experiments during the International Geophysical Year and his Vanguard Observation Station was the first allied station to track Sputnik. He retired in 1969 at Fort Ord with the rank of major.
Memberships: Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 101 of Salinas, and St. John's Episcopal Church in Monterey.

Annie M. Morinini
Annie M. Morinini, 98, of Greenfield, died of natural causes Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, at George L. Mee Memorial Hospital, King City.
She was born
in Brioni, Verzasca, Switzerland, and lived in Greenfield for more than 50 years. She was a homemaker. She immigrated to the United States in 1926 and met and married her husband in 1932, spending the remainder of her life in Greenfield, except for her later years at the home of Leno and Linda Morinini in King City. Fifty of those years were on the family ranch off Underwood Road in Greenfield.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Aquilino Morinin; sister, Ida Pura; nephew, Victor Pura; brother, Paul Minghetti; and brothers and parents from Switzerland.

Marian Tsuneko Tanda
Marian Tsuneko Tanda, 84, of Salinas, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Skyline Nursing Care following a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Los Angeles and lived in Salinas for 62 years. She was a retired housekeeper. She graduated from El Centro High School in 1935 and enjoyed ballroom dancing, folk dancing and fishing.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Tanda, in January.
Memberships: Lincoln Avenue Presbyterian Church, Japanese American Citizens League, Monterey Bay Orchid Society, former member of Salinas Anglers Club and Spin Drifters Folk Dancing Club.
Survivors: Son, Wayne (Diane) Tanda of Morgan Hill; daughter, Jean (Bob) Hirasaki of Gilroy; sister, Misao Inana of Gardena; grandson, Casey Tanda of San Jose and granddaughter, Jade Tanda of Long Beach.

Norman W. Miner
Norman W. Miner, 73, of Salinas, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born
in Great Falls, Mont., and moved to California as a small child, finally settling in Turlock, where he attended school. He lived in Dixon for a number of years following his military service, moved to Santa Cruz in 1972 and to Salinas in 1974. He owned and operated a 7-Eleven store in Salinas.
Military service: U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.
Memberships: Veterans of Foreign Wars 7895, American Legion Post 589 and life member of Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors: Wife, Aileen Miner of Salinas; brother, Bryan Miner of Turlock; sisters, Merlyn Hillberg of Turlock and Marilyn Heyne of Fresno; and several nieces and nephews.
Cremation: Private under the direction of Benito and Azzaro's Pacific Gardens Chapel, 1050 Cayuga St., Santa Cruz.

Haskell Earl Paden
Haskell Earl Paden, 94, of Turlock, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Emanuel Medical Center, Turlock.
He was born
in Fairland, Okla., and moved to Salinas at an early age, living in Salinas for 47 years before moving to Keyes in 1971 and settling in Turlock in 1989. He was in the trucking business for 19 years before he worked for Kaiser Permanente as a machinist foreman for 30 years.
Memberships: Machinist Union, Moose Lodge in Salinas and Faith Tabernacle Church of God in Sacramento.
Survivors: Wife, Elma Paden of Turlock; sons, Dale Oxford of Salinas, and Luis Paden and Eugene Paden, both of Sacramento; daughters, Jewell Bailey of Modesto and Donna Cask of Salinas; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
