Beatriz 'Mamacita' Cuen Grijalva
Beatriz "Mamacita" Cuen Grijalva, 70, of Seaside, died of mesothelimoa lung cancer Wednesday, March 14, 2001, in Monterey.
She was born
in Movas, Sonora, Mexico, and lived in Monterey County for 39 years. She was a hotel housekeeper, working for hotels, including the Marriott Hotel, for 40 years. She was an avid bingo player and lived to work in her garden. She was known to have a green thumb. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and cooking and Spanish music. She loved to spend time with her family. Her son, Oscar Grijalva, preceded her in death.

Survivors: Sons, Omar Grijalva, Rafael Grijalva, Armando Grijalva and Humberto Grijalva, all of Seaside; daughters, Martha Grijalva Ratliff, Cecilia Gallegos, Beatriz Vazques, Rebeca Grijalva, Noemi Grijalva and Maricella Grijalva, all of Seaside; brother, Gregorio Cuen of Seaside; sister, Carmen Alvarez Obregon of Sonora, Mexico; 29 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and former husband, Ralph A. Grijalva of Seaside.

Jessie White
Jessie White, 80, of Prunedale, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Hospice House in Monterey.
She was born
in Corbridge, England, and lived in the area for 57 years. She was a watercolor artist and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and cooking.
Survivors: Husband of 57 years, Charles White of Prunedale; sons, Chuck White of Aptos and Nick White of Prunedale; daughters, Maxine Alberti of Morgan Hill and Patricia White of Prunedale; brothers, David McRobert, Nick McRobert and Jim McRobert, all of Western Australia; sisters, Sheila Cruikshank and Mary Vickery, both of Western Australia; six grandchildren; and four great-grandsons.

Emma Lynne Narte
Emma Lynne Narte, 37, of Yuba City, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, in Yuba City.
She was born
in Salinas and moved to Yuba City seven years ago. She was a cashier with Jack in the Box for five years.

Raymond Gutteriez
Raymond Gutteriez, 72, of Salinas, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born
in Oakland and lived in Salinas. He was a senior storekeeper with Monterey County Public Works for 21 years and was the Park and Recreation Commissioner. He attended McClyemonds High School in Oakland and graduated from Hartnell College with an associate of art's degree. He was very proud that all of his children attended Palma High School. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Guttierez.
Military service: Served in the Army in World War II and Korean War. He received the WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Marksman Badge Rifle Carbine.

Survivors: Wife of 53 years, Lula Gutteriez of Salinas; daughter, Linda A. Gutteriez-Thombs of North Carolina; sons, Raymond L. Gutteriez Jr. of Sacramento, Harold L. Concepcion M. 'Connie' Lopez
Concepcion M. "Connie" Lopez, 75, of Salinas, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after an illness.
She was born
in Brawley and lived in the Salinas Valley for 64 years. She was a homemaker. In her earlier years, she was very active in the Women's Auxiliary, music programs and held several officer positions within the Apostolic Church. She also worked with the Apostolic New Life Academy. She was preceded in death by her husband, The Rev. Eusebio G. Lopez, in 1998, and son, Samuel M. Lopez.

Shirley Jean Calender
Shirley Jean Calender, 67, of Fresno, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, in Fresno.
She was born
in Fresno, lived in Salinas for more than 30 years and moved to Fresno recently. She was a volunteer foster grandparent at her granddaughter's school, University Park. She also volunteered with the Monterey County Office of Elections, the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop in Salinas and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She enjoyed cooking, shopping, traveling and especially her grandchildren. She attended First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors: sons, Kevin Richards of Alaska, David (Sharon) Calender of Visalia, Marc Calender of Monterey, and Kendall (Angela) Calender and Kurtis (Jan) Calender, both of Salinas; daughters, Koree (Joe) Cabotage of Salinas and Lori (Eric) King of Oakland; mother, Lillian Tippit of Fresno; and 10 grandchildren.

Mamie Lee White
Mamie Lee White, 92, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at Pacific Coast Care Center after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Cleveland, Miss., and lived in Salinas for 43 years. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her sons, Marvin J. White, Walter R. White Jr. and Emmitte E. White, and daughters, Doris Cox and Evelyn White.
Survivors: Daughter, Margie Pifer of Celina, Ohio; sons, James A. White of Bian, Okla., and Bill A. White of Salinas; brothers, Woodrow Livingston and June Livingston, both of Mississippi; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Charles R. 'Monk' Meyer
Charles R. "Monk" Meyer, 87, formerly of Carmel, died of natural causes Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, in Hampton, N.H.
He was born
in West Point, N.Y., and lived in Carmel from 1965 to 1999 before moving to Hampton. He was in property development with Cannery Row Co. before his retirement. He was a member of the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, was first runner-up for the first Heisman Trophy in 1935, received the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame Gold Medal in 1987 and was named to the Sports Illustrated Silver Anniversary All-American Team, 1961.
Military service: Retired Brigadier General, retiring after 30 years of service in the Army. His last assignment was Deputy Post Commander at Fort Ord from 1965 to 1967.
Memberships: Monterey Peninsula Country Club golf course.
Survivors: Wife, Anne Meyer of Pacific Grove; son, Charles R. Meyer II of Salinas; and daughter, Christine Tracey of New Hampshire.

Ottilia Larsen, 74, died Monday, Sept. 24, at Sunridge Rehab Care Center after a long illness.
She was born
in Altheim, Austria, and lived in Salinas for 28 years. She was a homemaker.
Survivors: Husband of 51 years, Harold W. Larsen of Salinas; son, Eric Larsen of Salinas; sisters, Thersa Imsolar and Rosa, both of Austria; one granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

Jose L. Garcia, 90, of Salinas, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born
in Pleasanton, Texas, and lived in Salinas for 60 years. He was an icemaker with Growers Ice for 30 years. His wife, Maria M. Garcia, and daughters, Estella Sigala and Elida Avecillia, preceded him in death.
Survivors: Sons, Rudy Garcia of Salinas and Maximilliano S. Garcia of Arizona; daughter, Maggie Tarazan of Tulare; brother, Jesse M. Garcia of Gilroy; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Twilight Delight McMillan
Twilight Delight McMillan, 78, of Marina, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
She was born
in South Dakota and lived on the Monterey Peninsula for 38 years. She was a retired beautician and apartment manager. She was an artist who enjoyed painting with oils. Her greatest joys were her garden and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors: Sons, Wayne McMillan of Watsonville and Michael McMillan of Salinas; daughters, Stephanie McMillan of Marina, Ginny McMillan of Watsonville and Kimberly McMillan of Salinas; sisters, Ruth Dennis and Phyllis Peck, both of Fresno; brother, Ralph Freund of Sacramento; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mark M. Hosaka, 75, of Salinas, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born
in Morrill, Neb., and lived in Salinas for 41 years. He was a self-employed gardener. He also worked for many years at Salinas Strawberrys before retiring.

Survivors: Wife of 41 years, Maria Hosaka of Salinas; son, Mitchell Hosaka of Salinas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
