Fred Choy

Fred Choy, 73, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital of cardiopulmonary arrest.
He was born icon June 30, 1928, in California. He retired as a self-employed chef. He enjoyed cooking, fishing and was an avid San Francisco 49ers fan. He was a volunteer cook for the Alisal Unified School District and the Salinas City Elementary School District. He also was a Big Brother volunteer.

Survivors: Wife, Clara Choy of Salinas; sons, Kendrick Choy of Salinas and Brody Choy of Madera; daughters, Caron Paicxao of Sacramento and Tiffany Choy of Menlo Park; sisters, Ella Lim of Sacramento and Bessie Gon of Sacramento and nine grandchildren.

Visitation: At 9 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17 at Whitehurst Muller Funeral Chapel, East Alisal St., Salinas.

Services: Noon on Saturday, Nov. 17 at the funeral chapel.

Interment: Greenlawn Memorial Park in Colma.

Memorials: Diabetes Foundation.

Tracy G. Willis

Tracy G. Willis, 89, of Salinas, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born icon Sept. 25, 1912, in Blackville, S.C., and lived in Salinas for 72 years. He was in the produce business for 75 years. For the last 26 years, he owned a brokerage business, Tracy Willis Co. He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and playing golf and poker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, who died in 1988.

Military service: Navy veteran of World War II, where he served in the South Pacific.

Memberships: Salinas Golf and Country Club and the Salinas Elks Lodge No. 614.

Survivors: Son, Gregg Willis of Salinas; daughter, Cindy (Steve) Lyons of Santa Barbara; sister Mary Willis of Salinas; and grandchildren Megan Willis and Jake, Scott and Amanda Lyons.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, in the chapel at the Garden of Memories Memorial Park chapel, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Memorials: Contributions may be made to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara, 300 W. Pueblo, Santa Barbara 93105.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home.

Elvia Theresa Lazzaroni

Elvia Theresa Lazzaroni, 79, of Greenfield, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at her home following a lengthy illness.
She was born icon Feb. 20, 1922, in King City and lived in Greenfield since 1947. She was a mail clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Greenfield before her retirement. She also resided in San Benito County. She had many friends and enjoyed camping in her motor home, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Memberships: Greenfield American Legion Woman's Auxiliary, past member of the Silver Kings and Queens, past Cub Scout leader and Catechism teacher.

Survivors: Husband, Hugo Lazzaroni of Greenfield; sons, Ken Lazzaroni of Davis and Ron Lazzaroni of Paso Robles; sister, Dina Bailo of Fremont; grandchildren, Teresa Lazzaroni of San Francisco, Lisa Lazzaroni of Davis, Doug Lazzaroni of Greenfield, Sandy Lazzaroni of Greenfield, Jo Lin Lazzaroni of Paso Robles; great-grandchildren, Madison Lazzaroni of Greenfield and Drew Lazzaroni of Greenfield.

Visitation: 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Greenfield.

Rosary and Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17 at the church.

Burial: Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Memorials: Donor's favorite charity.

Esteban Hernandez

Esteban Hernandez, 38, of Soledad, died of cancer Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital.
He was born icon Aug. 23, 1963, in San Jose, Guanajuato, Urangato, Mexico, and lived in Soledad. He was a laborer with Dole Co.

Survivors: Wife, Guillermina Hernandez of Soledad; sons, Andreas Hernandez and Esteban Hernandez, both of Soledad; parents, Jose Hernandez and Aurora Hernandez, both of Soledad; brothers, Roberto Hernandez and Genaro Hernandez, both of Soledad; sisters, Raquel Nunes and Josefina Pizano, both of Soledad; and grandmother, Luz Ruiz of Mexico.

Mass: Noon today, Dec. 3, at Our Lady of Solitude Church, 235 Main St., Soledad.

Burial: Following at Soledad cemetery.

Arrangements: Whitehurst Terry Funeral Service, 395 East St., Soledad.

Ada W. Phillips

Ada W. Phillips, 86, of Salinas, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Pacific Care Center following a lengthy illness.
She was born icon June 1, 1915, in Grangeville, Idaho, and lived in Salinas for 73 years. She was retired from Sears in Salinas following 23 years of service. She and her late husband were active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion and were cooks for many barbecues and dinners for the organizations. They also headed the chili cook-off team several times at the Monterey County Fair for the American Legion.

They would dress up as Santa and Mrs. Claus and visit family and friends to deliver presents on Christmas Eve and for anyone who would ask, as well as the juvenile hall children. They also volunteered at Special Olympics for several years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clem "JR" Phillips, in 1990; father, Harry Sales, in 1955; her mother, Helen Sales, in 1966; and brother, Glenn Sales, in 1980.

Survivors: Nieces, Barbara Gnesa of Jerome, Idaho, and Judy Finatti of Salinas; nephew, Paul Sales of Wendell, Idaho; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and her special neighbor, Josephine Morris of Salinas.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Maria Luisa Zaragoza

Maria Luisa Zaragoza, 50, of Castroville, died of cancer Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at her home.
She was born icon April 26, 1951, in Weslaco, Texas, and was in partnership with her husband in Castroville Produce and G&Z Farms, both in Castroville. Shewas vice president and secretary of G&Z Farms. She was devoted to her family.

Memberships: Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church.

Survivors: Husband of 25 years, Francisco Zaragoza of Castroville; sons, Francisco Zaragoza and Juan Zaragoza, both of Castroville; daughter, Rosa Zaragoza of Castroville; brother, Miguel DeAnda of Weslaco; and sisters, Diana DeAnda of Watsonville and Frances Perez of Salinas.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Dec. 4, at Whitehurst Muller Funeral Chapel, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. today, Dec. 4, at Our Lady of Refuge Church, 11140 Preston St., Castroville.

Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the church.

Burial: Castroville district cemetery, Moss Landing.

Johna R. Osburn

Johna R. Osburn, 63, of King City, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital of natural causes.
She was born icon on Dec. 27, 1937, in Pacific Grove and was the co-owner of Osburn Construction in Soledad. She was a past volunteer vacation Bible school director, educational director and Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed cooking, ceramics, artwork and drawing and spending time with her grandchildren. She sponsored children through the Christian Children's Fund and Gleanings for the Hungry.

Memberships: Woman's Auxiliary for Harbor Light Christian Center and a parishioner of Liberty Chapel in Soledad.

Survivors: Husband, John Osburn of Soledad; son, Dale Osburn of Watsonville; brothers, the Rev. Tom Stewart of Soledad, Mike Stewart of Bakersfield; sister, Linda Coulter of Redding; grandchildren, Brandon Osburn of Watsonville and Casey Osburn of Huntington Beach.

Visitation: From 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Whitehurst Terry Funeral Chapel, 395 East St., Soledad.

Service: At 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Liberty Chapel, 274 Kidder St., Soledad.

Burial: Soledad Cemetery following the service.

Concepcion Buhion Mendoza

Concepcion Buhion Mendoza, 72, of Seaside, died of natural causes Thursday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
She was born icon Dec. 4, 1928, in Palompon, Leyte, Philippines, and lived in Monterey County for 42 years. She was a small business owner for years and worked at the Naval Postgraduate School for 22 years. She was active in her church and enjoyed crocheting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Mendoza, in 1993.

Memberships: Fil-Am Association of Marina, Fil-Visayan Association, Legion of Mary, American Legion Auxiliary, Fil-Am Catholic Association, Legionarios Del Trabajo and Angeles Club.

Survivors: Daughters, Mercedes Abluton of Carmel Valley and Corazon Mendoza Richardson of San Jose; son, Richard Mendoza of Hollywood; sisters, Dominga Buhion and Filomena Arroyo, both of the Philippines, and Sequndina Saragoza of Salinas; brothers, Dr. Jose Buhion and Silverio Buhion, both of the Philippines, and Ben Buhion of Seaside; and four grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Chapel of Seaside, 1610 Noche Buena St., Seaside.

Rosary: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the mortuary chapel.

Mass: 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at St. Francis Xavier Church, 1475 La Salle Ave., Seaside.

Burial: Following at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Agnes Ajootian Martin

Agnes Ajootian Martin, 91, of Bakersfield, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Bakersfield.
She was born icon Aug. 11, 1910, in Fowler and was a lifelong California resident.

Memberships: Armenian Apostolic Church of Fowler.

Survivors: Son, Dikran (Betty) Garabedian of Bakersfield; brother, Martin (Florence) Ajootian of Bakersfield; sister, Marian (Suren) Tegirian of Reedley; sister-in-law, Gladys Ajootian of Bakersfield; and grandson, Abraham Gabriel Garabedian of Salinas.

Visitation: 5 p.m. today, Dec. 4, at Greenlawn Southwest Mortuary Funeral Directors, 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield.

Services: Graveside Services 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Fowler district cemetery in Fowler.

Hope Joy Swain

Hope Joy Swain, 99, of Menlo Park, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, in Menlo Park.
She was born icon Nov. 7, 1901, in Nevada, at a mining camp operated by her father, Frank Everett, and moved to Pacific Grove in 1904. She began nurse's training in 1922 at Hahnemann Hospital in San Francisco and received her license from the University of California in 1924. Her husband, William Swain, was manager of the Salinas American Legion airport from the early 1930s until 1942 and she acted as his assistant and wrote about events at the airport in a column called Skywriting, which appeared in the Salinas Index-Journal and Salinas Morning Post.

She also continued to nurse and helped her mother and other family operate a lodging house and Sunday dining room in Pacific Grove at Trimmer Hill. She was an accomplished pianist and was an organist for several years at St. John's Chapel, Del Monte. In the late 1940s she returned to nursing full time at hospitals in Berkeley, Pasadena and Salinas. She then lived in Hawaii, where she spent seven years as supervising nurse of a sugar plantation at Paauilo on the Hawaiian Hamakua coast.

Survivors: Nephew, William Wood of Menlo Park.

Services: No services are planned.

Arrangements: California Cremation Society.

Gertie L. Goodnight

Gertie L. Goodnight, 86, of Salinas, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Katherine Convalescent Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born icon Sept. 9, 1915, in DeView, Ark., and lived in Salinas for 68 years. She was a homemaker and worked in the produce packing sheds in the 1940s.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne C. Goodnight, in September 1993, and stepson, Wayne C. Goodnight Jr., in November.

Memberships: First Freewill Baptist Church of Salinas, where she was active in the church and taught Sunday school and was the church pianist.

Survivors: Daughter-in-law, Lori Goodnight of Santa Rosa; grandsons, Brian Goodnight of Elk Grove and Michael Goodnight of Santa Rosa; and many friends and family.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at the mortuary chapel.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.
