Clarence E. Melville

Clarence E. Melville, 73, of Royal Oaks, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System of natural causes.
He was born icon in Monterey on Oct. 16, 1928, and worked as a rig operator for much of his life before he retired. He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening and hunting. In his early years, he worked on area ranches. He was concerned for lost animals. He loved spending time with his family, traveling and playing cards.

His son, Loran Melville; brother Robert B. Melville; and parents, Clarence and Ethel Melville, preceded him in death.

Survivors: Wife, Joan Melville of Royal Oaks; sons Calvin Melville of Royal Oaks and Karl E. Melville of Hollister; daughters Marilyn Ann Correa of Santa Cruz, Jennifer Ann McKee of Washington and Gurtrude Joanne Duran of Idaho; brothers Donald A. Melville of Auberry and Leland E. Melville of Salinas; sister Nancy B. Flannigan of Phoenix; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, at Soledad District Cemetery, Soledad, under the direction of Whitehurst Terry Funeral Service.

Beatrice Tarantino

Beatrice Tarantino, 85, of Monterey, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at her home.
She was born icon in San Francisco and lived in Monterey County for 80 years. She worked in the canneries and with Mission Linen in Pacific Grove in her early days. She enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony, in 1990.

Memberships: Founding member of First Baptist Church of Carmel Valley.

Survivors: Son, Peter Tarantino of Monterey; daughters, Rose La Sala and Briged Dykwel, both of Monterey; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 2 p.m. today, May 11, at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey.

Services: 7 p.m. today, May 11, at the mortuary and 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Mission Memorial Park, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Memorials: Carmel Valley Baptist Church Recreation Hall, 8340 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley 93924.

Florante T. 'Flor' Mesina

Florante T. "Flor" Mesina, 57, of Salinas, died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
He was born icon in Bacolor, Pampanga, Philippines, and lived in Salinas for nine years. He was a mail handler with the U.S. Postal Service.

Memberships: Madonna del Sasso parish and Masantol-Macabebe town Fiesta Association.

Survivors: Wife, Concordia "Connie" Mesina of Salinas; daughters, Ma. Elizabeth M. Roque, Maria Lourdes Y. Mesina and Amelia Y. Mesina, all of Salinas; mother, Caridad T. Mesina of the Philippines; sisters, Romana M. Tuazon and Estrelita M. Tayson, both of the Philippines; brothers, Epipanio T. Mesina, Roberto T. Mesina, Joselito T. Mesina and Alex T. Mesina, all of the Philippines; granddaughter, Carmela M. Roque; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. today, March 15, 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 16, and noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. today, March 15, at the mortuary chapel.

Services: Visitation 1 p.m. Friday, March 16, followed by procession to Madonna del Sasso Church, 320 E. Laurel Drive, Salinas, for the funeral Mass at 2 p.m. and followed by visitation at the mortuary from 3 to 9 p.m.

Entombment: Final visitation noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the mortuary followed by procession to Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, for the entombment at 2 p.m.

Zelma L. Paden

Zelma L. Paden, 94, of Salinas, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at SunRidge Care and Rehabilitation after a lengthy illness.
She was born icon in Strathmore and lived in Salinas for 75 years. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Louis Paden, and her sister, Pearl Conn, preceded her in death.

Memberships: Salinas Moose Lodge, Ladies of the Moose, Ladies Drill Team at the Moose Lodge, Active Seniors.

Survivors: Daughters, Marjorie Anderson and Louise Tingley of Salinas; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., today, April 9, and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 10 at Garden of Memories Mausoleum Chapel, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Entombment: At the Garden of Memories Mausoleum.

Memorials: Hospice of the Central Coast, PO Box 2750, Monterey 93940.

Larry R. Davis

Larry R. Davis, 34, of Greenfield, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001 at his home following a brief illness.
He was born icon in Alma, Ga. and lived in Greenfield for six years. He was an insurance agent. He is preceded in death by his mother, Sonia Crapps, and father, Russell Davis.

Military Service: U.S. Navy.

Survivors: Grandmother, Annie L. Crapps of Baxley, Ga.; brother, Charles Davis of Baxley; sisters, Celena Petty and Cindy Davis both of Baxley; daughter, Crimson Tsuboi of Japan; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services: A gathering of friends will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the home of David Chereton.

Inurnment: Cremation was held.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Home.

John E. Hough

John E. Hough, 64, of Salinas, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City of heart failure.
He was born icon in Redlands, grew up in San Diego and lived in Monterey County for 32 years. He was retired as a history teacher and head of the driver education department at Gonzales High School for 25 years.

He and John Pakish coached the Gonzales High junior varsity football team for eight years and the varsity team for two years. John Pakish said, "John Hough was the best line coach he ever worked with." They had seven championships.

He graduated from La Jolla High School in San Diego. He earned a B.A. and M.S. at San Diego State University.

Memberships: First United Methodist Church in Salinas.

Survivors: Wife, Ellen Hough of Salinas; daughters, Laura Aurandt of Frederick, Md. and Susanna Pagan of San Diego; sister, Virginia Alexander of Sea Ranch; brothers Howard Hough of San Diego and Michael Hough of Ventura; several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: From 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001 and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Services: 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 20, 2001 at First United Methodist Church, Lincoln and West San Luis streets, Salinas.

Inurnment: Cremation will follow services. Burial of ashes will be at the El Camino Memorial Park in San Diego.

Memorials: American Heart Association, 1514 Moffet St. Suite A, Salinas 93905.

Arrangements: Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel.

Nolan James Houle

Nolan James Houle, 16, of Anchorage, Ala, died Sunday Aug. 12, 2001, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Anchorage.
He was born icon in Anchorage. He was a sophomore at East Anchorage High School, where he was a member of the cross country running, cross country skiing and junior varsity football teams.

He was active in competitive swimming and youth soccer. He was vice president of East Anchorage Rotary Interact Club and a volunteer with the Salvation Army and the Special Olympics. He will be greatly missed by many aunts, uncles and cousins, and his large circle of friends.

Survivors: Father, Larry James Houle of Anchorage; mother, Sunnie Kay Houle of Anchorage; brothers, Graham Houle and Marshall Houle of Anchorage; paternal grandfather Arnie Rice of Anchorage; paternal grandmother Darlene Rice of Anchorage; maternal grandparents, Ingrid Ekelin of Palm Springs, James D. Briggs and Susan Briggs both of Salinas; great-grandmother, Catherine Ekelin of Carmel; many aunts uncles, and cousins.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Aug. 17 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Anchorage.

Memorials: Salvation Army of Anchorage; the Nolan James Houle Memorial Scholarship c/o First National Bank of Anchorage, attention Sue Foley; or the donor's favorite charity.

Juanita Robinett

Juanita Robinett, 73, of Anderson, died of natural causes Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Canyonwood Care Center in Redding.
She was born icon in Seminole, Okla., and moved to Anderson from Prunedale. She was a bookkeeper for J.T. Robinett Water Well Drilling Co.

Survivors: Husband, J.T. Robinett of Anderson; sons, John Robinett and Joe Robinett, both of Prunedale, and Kenneth Robinett of Millville; daughters, Janet McCormick of Alaska, Betty Cook of Anderson and Marion Stephens of San Francisco; brother, William Harbour of Marysville; sister, Joy Holley of Marysville; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Allen and Dahl Chapel, 21853 Topland Drive, Palo Cedro.

Cremation: Will be held.

Roy G. Flores

Roy G. Flores, 36, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a shooting.
He was born icon in Salinas and was an agriculture laborer. He was preceded in death by his son, Marcos A. Flores, in January 1995.

Memberships: Victory Outreach Church.

Survivors: Wife, Carmen Flores of Salinas; son, Roy G. Flores Jr. of Salinas; daughters, Jacquelyn Flores and Angela C. Flores, both of Salinas; mother, Martha "Marty" Rozin of Salinas; brothers, Ernie Flores and Roman Rozin, both of Salinas, and Steve Flores of Texas; sisters, Gloria Flores, Cynthia Morales and Lorena Vela, all of Salinas, Myra Garza of Greenfield and Mary Flores of Texas; maternal grandmother, Gloria Diaz of Salinas; maternal grandfather, Gregory Gonzales of Aberdeen, Wash.; 12 nieces; and 12 nephews.

Visitation: Noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Whitehurst Muller Funeral Chapel, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas, and 4 p.m. until closing at Victory Outreach Chapel, 155 Bardin Road, Salinas.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the church.

Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.

Virgil Ersey Webster

Virgil Ersey Webster, 82, of Vinita, Okla., died of cancer Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at his home.
He was born icon in Douglas County, Missouri, and was a former Monterey Peninsula resident. He was a boiler plant operator.

Survivors: Wife, Joyce Webster of Vinita; and son, Barry Webster, of Vinita.

Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 4, at Monterey Peninsula Mortuary, 1915 Ord Grove Ave., Seaside.

Services: Graveside services, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Mission Memorial Park, Seaside.

Johnny J. Albano

Johnny J. Albano, 93, of Salinas, died unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center.
He was born icon June 24, 1908, in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, Philippines, and lived in Salinas for 42 years. He was a retired Army soldier and Civil Service employee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Magdalena Albano, in 1992, and son, Alex B. Albano, in 1993.

Military service: U.S. Army, Sergeant First Class, serving during World War II and the Korean War. He retired following 24 years of service. Served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in World War II and received several service awards.

Memberships: Lifetime treasurer and member of 1st and 2nd Filipino Regiment and a charter member of the Laoaguenians Association, Fil-Visayan Association in America, member of St. Mary of the Nativity Church and American Legion Post 652.

Survivors: Daughters, Jane Albano of Salinas and Flora (Wayne) Welch of Tulare; sons, Johnny (Joan) Albano Jr. of Lake Forrest and Nes (Kim) Albano of Pleasanton; grandchildren, Nicole Albano of Santa Barbara and Marissa Welch and Ryan Welch, both of Tulare; and other relatives in the Philippines and Hawaii.

Visitation: 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, and Thursday, Dec. 13, at Healey Mortuary, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.

Rosary: 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, at the mortuary chapel.

Services: Final visitation at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at the mortuary chapel, followed by procession to St. Mary of the Nativity Church, 1702 Second Ave., Salinas for the funeral Mass at 2:30 p.m.

Burial: Following at Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas, with full military honors.
