Alexis Guadalupe Escobar
Alexis Guadalupe Escobar, an infant, of Salinas, died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at the Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford.
She was born
July 17, 2001.
Survivors: Parents Alejandro and Aria Escobar of Salinas; sisters Alma and Jo Anna Escobar of Salinas; brother Alejandro Escobar Jr. of Salinas; grandparents Hector Buelna and Juana Morales, both of Mexico; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Visitation: 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at Healey Mortuary Chapel, 405 N. Sanborn Road, Salinas.
Rosary: 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the mortuary chapel.
Services: Final visitation rites at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at the mortuary chapel followed by Mass at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 40 Sherwood Drive, Salinas.
Burial: Garden of Memories Memorial Park, 768 Abbott St., Salinas.
Clifford E. Lyman
Clifford E. Lyman, 63, of Salinas, died Monday, June 4, 2001, at his residence.
He was born
in Salinas and was a lifelong resident. He was a former logistics manager for Sun World. He attended St. Francis Boarding School in Watsonville and Palma High School in Salinas. He worked in the produce industry for 35 years, starting with Salinas Valley Vegetable Exchange. He also worked at Interharvest, Sunharvest, and retired after working at Sunworld.
He enjoyed fishing, was a formidable chess player and enjoyed barbecuing. And, like most cowboys, he was a poet at heart.
Survivors: Wife, Leonor Lyman of Salinas; son, Clint Lyman of Salinas; daughter, Loralee Lyman of Pacific Grove; mother, Mildred Lyman of Yerington, Nev.; brothers, Stanley Lyman of Eagle, Alaska, Paul Lyman of Livingston, Mont.; granddaughters, Cory, Lauren, Amanda and Taylor Lyman of Salinas.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, June 7, at Whitehurst Muller Chapel, East Alisal and Pajaro streets, Salinas.
Rosary: 7 p.m. today, June 7 at the mortuary chapel.

Robert Lee Jett Jr.
Robert Lee Jett Jr., 85, of Marina, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center.
He was born
in Lake Village, Ark., and lived in Marina since 1967. He was retired from the Air Force and in 1967, helped to open the Monterey Macy's as the Housewares Department manager. He managed many areas of the store before retiring after 18 years. He was a volunteer for 16 years with the Meals On Wheels program through the Sally Judd Griffin Center in Pacific Grove and was an active volunteer at the Monterey Bay Aquarium for 16 years, serving in many capacities whereever he was needed. He especially enjoyed working with the Aquarium Outreach program to schools with the AquariVan. He also loved woodworking in his home shop. He made many items of furniture for his family and had quite an extensive tool collection. He graduated from Sacramento State University with a degree in real estate.
Military service: Retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force in 1961 and served in the Army from 1941 to 1947 before transferring to the Air Force.

Visitation: Noon to 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, The Paul Mortuary, 390 Lighthouse Ave., Pacific Grove.
Prayer service: 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at the mortuary.
Burial: 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 16, San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

JoAnn Carole Bell
JoAnn Carole Bell, 60, of Newport, Wash., died of cancer March 27, 2001, at her home.
She was born
in Santa Cruz and lived in Idaho and Washington for the past 20 years. Before moving to Idaho she was a bank manager in Salinas and before her retirement she was an order processing manager with a computer company in Spokane, Wash. She enjoyed her family, the outdoors, gardening, digging for sapphires and garnets, traveling and her animals.
Survivors: Husband of 32 years, Alan Bell of Newport; son, Rick Kuebler of Arkansas; stepdaughter, Kelly Schultz of Newport; mother, Rosalie Myers of Capitola; granddaughter, Jamie Kuebler of Watsonville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: Memorial services 1 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at the Cliffs park at the end of Playa Boulevard in La Selva Beach.

Belle V. Baptista
Belle V. Baptista, 90, of Salinas, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Skyline Nursing in Salinas after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Santa Clara and lived in Salinas for 30 years and was a former Gilroy resident. She was a homemaker and worked in a cannery in Gilroy when she was a young girl. She and her husband owned and operated their family dairy in the Gilroy area and following their move to Salinas, owned a dairy on Cooper Road. She graduated from Santa Clara High School. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, dancing and traveling.
Memberships: Portuguese Women's Club in Gilroy and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors: Sons, Edwin Baptista of Salinas, Donald Baptista of Elk Grove and Frank Baptista of Watsonville; daughter, Rose Riley of Napa; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 1 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today, April 10, at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas.

Kathleen Karunos
Kathleen Karunos, 79, of Prunedale, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born
in Barboursville, W. Va., and lived in Prunedale for 18 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Survivors: Husband, Steve Karunos of Prunedale; son, Steven Karunos of Prunedale; daughters, Deanna Shivers of Gardenville, Nev., and Stephanie Karunos of Prunedale; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: Private family services will be held.
Cremation: Has been held.

Ronnie C. 'Ron' Heuson
Ronnie C. "Ron" Heuson, 56, of Salinas, died following an illness Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at his home.
He was born
and raised in Susanville and was a maintenance technician for the Acepex Corp. He lived in Salinas for 10 years. He was a wonderful husband and father as well as a poet and an avid hunter.
Military service: Retired U.S. Navy senior chief after 26 years. He was a Vietnam veteran who had received several medals.
Memberships: California Deer Association.
Survivors: Wife of 29 years Pamela "Chris" Heuson of Salinas; daughters Stephanie Faught of Portland, Ore., Tisha Perez and Nichole Heuson, both of Salinas; son Greggory Heuson of Northern California; sister Lloy Cunnington of Placerville; and six grandchildren.
Services: To be announced.
Cremation: Directed by Healey Crematory Co.
Memorials: Contributions may be made in his honor to the donor's favorite charity.
Narcisa Montemayor
Narcisa Montemayor, 95, of King City, died of natural causes Friday, April 13, 2001, at Natividad Medical Center.
She was born
in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and lived in King City. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed having family over and telling stories about her experiences in the Mexican Revolution. She raised animals such as chickens, rabbits, dogs and cats and loved to garden and cook. She was a supporter of San Juan del Valle Church in Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gregorio Montemayor; son, Fidel Montemayor; and sisters, Tiodora Torres and Marcaria Rosales.
Survivors: Son, Antonio Montemayor of King City; daughters, Rosa Zamorano of Welasco, Texas, Marla Ochoa of King City and Yolanda Castaneda of Livingston; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 1 to 7 p.m. today, April 17, at Whitehurst Grim Funeral Chapel, 429 Bassett, King City.
Rosary: 7 p.m. today, April 17, at the mortuary chapel.
Mass: 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 504 N. Third St., King City.

Bruce Eugene Long
Bruce Eugene Long, 80, of Salinas, died of congestive heart failure Saturday, April 14, 2001, at his home.
He was born
in Tulsa, Okla., and lived in Salinas. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in architectural engineering. His recent civilian occupations included several engineering projects for the Boeing Aircraft Co. in Seattle and he was the master planner at Fort Ord. He was certified on more than 30 aircraft, both military and civilian.
Military service: Graduated from the Army Air Corps flying class 41G, the last graduating class before Pearl Harbor.
He flew B26s for the Black Knights in the Korean War with the 5th Air Force and flew for Chennault's 14th Air Force in China during World War II. During his service, he earned several medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, and Presidential Unit Citation. He retired a lieutenant colonel after serving 20 years and was a veteran of three wars.
Memberships: Flying Tigers of the 14th Air Force Association, Flying Cadets 41G Association, Monterey County Retired Officers Association, American Legion Post 31 and Monterey AFA Air Force Association.
Survivors: Wife of 50 years, Virginia D. Long of Salinas; children, Ronald J. Long, Linda (Long) Wurster and Sharon (Long) Rohr, all of Salinas; sister, Bettie Douglas Crookham of Tulsa; and four grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 18, at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey.

Charles H. McCabe
Retired Lt. Cmdr. Charles H. McCabe, 82, of La Selva Beach, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at a Watsonville convalescent hospital after a brief illness.
He was born
in Portland, Ore., and lived in Santa Cruz County for 28 years. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked for the Stanford Linear Accelerator for 18 years. He was a graduate of the University of Nevada and was an award-winning photographer, specializing in outdoor scenery, especially the Sierra.
Military service: Served in the Navy for 22 years, retiring as a lieutenant commander. During his service he piloted jet aircraft and also served in diplomatic missions as an admiral's aide.
Memberships: Long-time member of the Sierra Club and devoted to numerous environmental causes.
Survivors: Wife, Joann Adair McCabe of La Selva Beach; sons, Charles H. McCabe of Los Gatos and Michael McCabe of New Mexico; daughter, Sharon Roller of Tracy; and two grandchildren.
Services: No services planned. A memorial gathering will be announced at a later date.
Cremation: Mehl's Colonial Chapel, 222 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville.
