Frederick George, county native
Frederick George, 60, of Arroyo Grande died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, in Hanford.
Visitation will be Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the People’s Funeral Chapel in Hanford. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at the Arroyo Grande District Cemetery. For information, call (209) 584-5591.
Mr. George was born
in Santa Maria, and had lived in San Luis Obispo County all of his life. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 33 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; a daughter, Jennifer L. George of Port Hueneme; a son, William I. George of Phoenix; two grandchildren; his mother, Emma George of Oceano; and a brother, William George of Oceano.
Michael E. Morgan
Michael E. Morgan, 21, of San Miguel, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, in San Luis Obispo County.
Visitation is today, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home in Paso Robles. A graveside service will be held on Saturday at noon at Pleasant Valley Cemetery east of San Miguel.
Mr. Morgan enjoyed fishing, golfing and riding motorcycles.
He is survived by his parents, Michael Morgan and Arlene White Bear of San Miguel; stepfather, Anthony Gerbasi of Downeyville, Calif.; four brothers, Danny Gerbasi, Christian Morgan, Clay Carmaneti and Wyatt Morgan of Arizona; four sisters, Nicole Gerbasi, Vivian Morgan of Arizona, Ciceila Sutherland of Paso Robles, and Frankie Gerbasi of San Miguel; uncles, Don White Bear of Paso Robles, Larry Morgan and David Morgan, both of Paso Robles, Dan Amaturo of Sacramento, Darrel, Greg and Joe White Bear of Sacramento, and Gabriel Morgan; aunts, Stephanie Sutherland of Paso Robles, Gwen Atilano of Fresno, Debbie Gregory of Morro Bay, and Cheryl Amaturo of Sacramento; and grandmothers, Sharon Lee White Bear of Sacramento, Joy Arbaugh of Paso Robles, and Dianna Gregory of San Luis Obispo.

Paul Janolis
Paul F. Janolis, 84, of Atascadero died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at his home.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atascadero.
Mr. Janolis was born
Nov. 20, 1916, in Cliffside, N.J. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, served in North Africa and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following retirement Mr. Janolis and his wife, Marie, enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing, golfing, metal detecting and reading. He was a member of the Central Coast Treasure Hunters, VFW and the Chalk Mountain Golf Association.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Janolis of Atascadero; five stepchildren, David Williams of Cambria, Dianne Williams of Santa Margarita, Marlene Williams of Atascadero, Jim William of Palo Cedro and Judi Sharp of Los Osos; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Mary Oeder of Cayucos, Gloria Brieske of Cedarburg, and Anne Schendel of Milwaukee, Wis.; brother William Janolis of Morro Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Pauline Wolff in 1975.

Edward X. Kunkel
Edward X. Kunkel, 74, a 12-year resident of Morro Bay, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at his home after a battle with lung cancer.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Pierside Coast Guard Station in Morro Bay, prior to scattering of ashes. The Rev. Lee Shepard will officiate.
Mr. Kunkel was born
May 9, 1926, in Long Beach. He attended Duke University in North Carolina in 1944 and graduated from Indiana State University in 1951 with a degree in business and a minor in zoology. From 1945 to 1948, Mr. Kunkel served as a Navy hospital corpsman. Later in life, he worked for Dow Chemical as a pharmaceutical salesman for 35 years.
Mr. Kunkel was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Louise, and his parents, Edward P. and Elsa Marchand Kunkel.
He is survived by his son, Edward P. Kunkel II; and his daughter, Susie Romanyk.

Marguerite
Van Winkle
Marguerite Van Winkle, 78, of Morro Bay died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at a local convalescent home.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. at the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall in Morro Bay. Bob Tapia will officiate. Cremation will take place, and remains will be scattered at sea.
Mrs. Van Winkle was born
in Sonnery, France, on July 22, 1922, to Numa Mottet and Glglore Camille Lemercler. She married Cecil Van Winkle, and moved to the area 33 years ago. She was a homemaker, and a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She is survived by her son, Stanley (Jackie) Mottet and wife Eulalia of France; and brother Raphael Mottet and wife Rolland of France.
Morris Kautz Sr.
Morris Wayne Kautz Sr., 83, of Oceano, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at a San Luis Obispo care center.
Cremation has taken place and burial is planned at a later date. No service will be held.
Mr. Kautz was born
in Ira, Iowa, on Jan. 30, 1917, to Adolph J. and Zilpha Emmack Kautz. He married Maxine McKeiver in Minot, N.D., on July 1, 1952. Retiring after 21 years as an officer and command pilot with the U.S. Air Force, he was the recipient of the Air Medal, Purple Heart and Prisoner of War medals, plus many awards and citations during his service years. He also retired after 11 years with ITT/FEC at Vandenberg Air Force Base, and was an Alaskan site-manager and computer analyst.
Mr. Kautz was a lifetime member of the Elks BPOE 1538 of Santa Maria, and a life member of the American Prisoners of War and Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Kautz was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Zilpha, and by two brothers, Dale and Max Kautz.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Maxine D. Kautz of Oceano; two sons, Morris “Skip” Kautz Jr., and wife Gerri of Arroyo Grande, and W. Joseph Kautz and wife Sylvia of Santa Barbara; four grandchildren, Nicholas and Tiffany Kautz of Arroyo Grande, and Justin and Jason Kautz of Santa Barbara; sister Roberta Kautz Madsen of Iowa; a sister-in-law, Vera M. Volotta and husband Alex of Laguna Niguel; and many nieces and nephews in Iowa and California.

Peggy Smiley
Peggy Lou “Hackney” Smiley, 70, of Paso Robles died recently.
She was born
in Marysville, Kan., on March 15, 1930, to Carl and Opal Hackney. She had lived in Paso Robles since 1937.
She attended the one-room school in the Union School District, then finished junior and senior high school in Paso Robles, graduating in 1948. She was a lifelong loyal Bearcat, and worked to keep her class together and in touch with one another.
She married Paul L. Smiley in 1949. They had two children, Rod and Suzanne, who were raised in Paso Robles and went through Paso Robles schools.
Mr. and Mrs. Smiley worked in the laundry, linen and dry cleaning business their entire married lives. Mrs. Smiley belonged to the First Baptist Church since age 15, and was very active in her younger years.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Smiley; son Rod Smiley; a daughter Suzanne Smiley, all of Paso Robles; grandsons Paul I. and Jason Smiley; six great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, June and Larry Moore of Paso Robles; a brother and sister-in-law, Monte and Connie Hackney of Templeton; aunts and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Carl and Opal Hackney.
Arnold Dean
Dr. Arnold Dean, 79, of San Luis Obispo died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at a San Luis Obispo hospital following a long illness.
At his request, his remains were cremated and no services were held.
Dr. Dean was born
Oct. 21, 1921, in Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada. His parents were Harold John Dean and Margaret Lister Miller. He received his elementary education at Lloydminster, then moved with his family to Edmonton, Alberta, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agriculture in 1945 and 1947 respectively. He then earned a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in 1950. Dr. Logan Carter offered him a teaching position in the new Soil Science Department at Cal Poly State University, where Dr. Dean enjoyed a long and successful career until retirement. Many hundreds of students have fond memories of him, as do his surviving colleagues.
He is survived by his sister, Isobel Collins and her husband, Robert, of Olds, Alberta; and a niece, Margaret Arthurs of Edmonton, Alberta.
Wendell L. Miller
Wendell L. Miller, 62, of Paso Robles, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, at his home.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Paso Robles District Cemetery.
Mr. Miller was born
July 13, 1938, in Emet, Okla. He moved to the San Joaquin Valley with his parents, Tom and Bessie Miller, and was raised in Pixley. Mr. Miller later lived in Bakersfield for 20 years and spent the last five years living in Paso Robles. According to his family, Mr. Miller was a proud father and loving husband. He spent many years coaching Little League Baseball and served in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 41 years, Robin, of Paso Robles; sons, Brent of Bakersfield and Aaron and wife Kris of Paso Robles; his parents, Tom and Bessie; sister, De De Nickelson of Newport Beach; sister-in-law, Carol Grogan of Atascadero; and several nieces and nephews.
David Fisk
David Fisk, 64, of San Luis Obispo died Friday, Nov. 27, 2000. He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed.
Oakley Thibodeau
Oakley F. Thibodeau, 86, of San Luis Obispo County died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, in Templeton.
At his request there will be no services; Burial at sea will be private.
Mr. Thibodeau was born
in Georgetown, Maine, on June 20, 1914, and had been a resident of San Luis Obispo County for 43 years. He retired after 20 years as a building maintenance man at Vandenberg Air Force Base. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and had been a goldsmith and coppersmith by trade.
His background as a coppersmith led to him building Liberty Ships during World War II. Through Admiral Rickover, Mr. Thibodeau was also very involved with the Trinity Lutheran Church and with assembling Bibles for the blind through the church’s Lutheran Braille Workers Inc.
He loved history and tinkering around the house. He enjoyed his family and his grandchildren. He was a member of the Paso Robles Trinity Lutheran Church, a 44-year member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Al Malaikah Shrine.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Thibodeau of Paso Robles; sons U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Anthony White of Oxnard, and Michael White of Solvang; and grandsons U.S. Navy Lt. Chris Snowden of Pensacola, Fla., and Michael Thibodeau of Maine.
He was preceded in death by a son, Theodore Thibodeau, in 1958.

Antonia Aguilar
Antonia Aguilar, 71, of Oceano died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, at an Arroyo Grande hospital.
A time of visitation is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 7 p.m. A Recitation of the Rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at the Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel in Grover Beach. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Arroyo Grande. The Rev. Jim Henry will officiate. Burial will follow at the Arroyo Grande Cemetery.
Mrs. Aguilar was born
July 5, 1929, in Gonzalez County, Texas. She moved to the Central Coast in 1966 from Nixon, Texas. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was a dedicated homemaker. She had a love for music and enjoyed going for rides.
Mrs. Aguilar is survived by her husband of 52 years, Perfecto Aguilar of Oceano; nine children, Manuela Aguirre of Arroyo Grande, Ruben Aguilar of Oceano, Tomasita UC of Arroyo Grande, Celia Guerra of Oceano, Esmeralda Viayra of Grover Beach, Isabel Leon of Santa Maria, Delfina Rocha of Oceano, Hilda Aguilar of Oceano and Irene Rocha of Oceano; five sisters and three brothers; 36 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. Mrs. Aguilar was preceded in death by son Joe Aguilar and her parents, Teodulo and San Juana Perez.

David Densmore
David Densmore, 56, of Avila Beach died Jan. 25, 2001, in Santa Nella.
A memorial service was held Feb. 3 at Lisle Funeral Home in Fresno. Cremation has taken place.
Mr. Densmore was born
Sept. 12, 1944, in Fresno. He was the son of Otis and Della Densmore. After graduating from Roosevelt High School, he worked for his father at Densmore Engine ReNu and Supply Co. He was the operations manager until 1995. He then moved to the San Luis Bay Mobile Estates in Avila Beach with his companion, Gerrye Scott. He was self employed as an automotive sales representative for Hopper Shop Equipment Sales in Stanton, and Jiscco in Fresno. He loved golfing and attending auto races.
Mr. Densmore is survived by his companion, Gerrye Scott of Avila Beach; her three children, Jeff, Doug and Debbye; mother Della Densmore of Santa Cruz; daughter Dina Lynn of Fresno; grandson Nicolas Lee of Fresno and brother Dennis Alan Densmore of Fresno.
Contributions in Mr. Densmore’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements were under the direction of Lisle Funeral Home in Fresno.
Don B. Miller
Don B. Miller, a 30-year resident of Los Osos, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, from complications of a stroke.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Feb. 11, at 1 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morro Bay.
Mr. Miller was born
in Des Moines, Iowa in 1924. After serving in the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, he married Patricia Lorene Sheets in 1946. They were married for 51 years prior to her death in 1997. Mr. Miller graduated from the School of Engineering at Purdue University in 1948, and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. After graduation he moved to California to work for the California State Highway Department. In the early 1950s, he became a partner of Campbell and Miller Civil Engineering in San Bernardino. The Millers lived in Redlands from 1954 to 1972. They were active at Trinity Episcopal Church and Redlands Country Club. After Mr. Miller’s retirement in 1972, the couple moved to Los Osos. For many years, Mr. Miller was well known for his big band show on local radio. He was an active member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morro Bay and was involved in many other community activities.
Mr. Miller is survived by three sons, Donald Coatsworth Miller, James Barrett Miller and David Walton Miller, as well as eight grandchildren.
