He owned and operated Kelley Motors for more than 60 years, starting as a Dodge dealer in Sonora in 1937. Four years later he bought the Central Motors Chevrolet dealership on Washington Street in Sonora.

A fire burned the business to the ground in 1970, and Coffill Park now occupies the Central Motors site. A day after the fire, Mr. Kelley moved his car dealership to Green Street, one block over.

Later he moved the car lot to West Stockton Road in Sonora, and in 1979 he moved Kelley Motors to Jamestown, where the business continues today.

Marlin Heldstab, a 37-year-old employee from Tuolumne City who runs the body shop at Kelley Motors, said the fire showed another side of his boss.

"So many people thought he was just a money man. When the fire came and we lost all our paperwork, a lot of people came forward and paid him anyway. He never got over that and always mentioned how good the people here were.

"His motto was, 'Everything happens for the best, and a little good comes out of everything.' "

Besides working at his car dealership, Mr. Kelley was a cattle rancher for more than 50 years.

He was a founding member of the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Posse, serving as captain in 1969, and he was a member of the board of directors of the Mother Lode Fair.

He also was a member of the board of directors of Sonora Community Hospital. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for more than 50 years.

Mr. Kelley was a descendant of two pioneer families in Tuolumne County, the Kelleys and Rosascos. He was born icon Sept. 10, 1917, in Salinas and graduated from Sonora High School at age 13 in 1930. He lived in Tuolumne County for 74 years.
