Michael (Mike) Charles Varjabedian passed away peacefully at the age of 82 on Saturday; June 19, 2004 surrounded by his loved ones. He was a native of Fresno, California and a life long resident of the Fresno and Madera Areas, farming in Madera for almost 60 years. Michael was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army in the European theater where he fought in the Battle of Bulge. He was very proud of his service to his country. Mike was a member of V.F.W. Post 1981 in Madera. He was a devoted member of St. Joachim Catholic Church. Michael started farming with his father and uncle and loved the land all of his life. He and his beloved dog, a Weimaraner named Kaiser, were well known around the city as they traveled the community on their way to visit friends for breakfast at the Fruit Basket and at Lucca’s Restaurant for lunch. His parents, Levon and Margarite and his sister, Camille, preceded Michael in death.

He is survived by his former wife Judy Mote, devoted daughter Michale (Missy) Simmons and her husband Kevin, his son Greg Michaels and his wife Sherry, his son Scott Michaels, all of Madera and his grandchildren Carolann and Aaron Michaels, Kiera and Quintin Simmons and Robert Michaels.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 from 1-8 pm. Rosary will be at Jay Chapel on Wednesday at 7pm. A Mass will be held at St. Joachim Catholic Church on Thursday, June 24, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. with entombment to follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Fresno, 264 N. Blythe.

Remembrances may be made to St. Joachim Catholic Church School Computer Lab or School Sports Gym 310 N. “I” St. Madera, CA 93637 or Alzheimer’s Foundation 3313 N. Hillard, Fresno, CA 93726.

Mr. Frank Soto passed away on Friday, April 8, 2005 at the age of 70. Frank, a native of Yuma, AZ has been a resident of Madera for the past 60 years. He worked as a lumber handler for 25 years. He was a member of St. Joachim Catholic Church.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife Mary Helen and his daughter Annette.

He is survived by his sons Lawrence F. Soto of Escondido, CA. and Jerry D. Soto and Leonard P. Soto both of Madera, his long time companion Erlene Munoz of Madera, his brothers Edward Ybarra of Madera, Lupe Ybarra of Hayward and Raul Ybarra of Madera, his 4 grandchildren Michael Yrigollen and Chris, Nancy and Dennon Soto.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 from 2:00-8:00 PM, with a vigil service beginning at 7:00 PM at Jay Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 9:00 AM at St. Joachim Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Madera.

Age 78, a native of Los Angeles, CA and a resident of Madera, CA for 50 years passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2005 at a Madera hospital. He was a farm laborer retiring in 1974. Alberto was a member of the Church Of God Of Prophecy in Madera.

Alberto is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rafaela Holguin of Madera, his four sons: Ramon Holguin, Alberto Holguin and his wife Amalia, Narciso Holguin & Louie Holguin all of Madera, his nine brothers & sisters: Manuel Holguin, Ramon Arellanes, Sisto Holguin, Antonia Madrid, Maria Noriega, Jose Holguin, Felipa Huizar, Francisco Holguin and Elias Holguin. He was the grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 2.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with an evening service on Wednesday at 7:00 P.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera. Funeral service will be on Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 9:00 A.M. also at Jay Chapel with interment to follow at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.

Freddie Edwin “Fred” Crosson

Freddie Edwin Crosson a native of Madera died Tuesday August 2, 2005. Fred spent his life in Madera, graduated from Madera High School in 1935 and joined the United States Navy serving in World War II as an Aviation Mechanic. Fred served on the USS Enterprise, the USS Saratoga and, and the USS Hornet, he fought in 5 major battles in the South Pacific. While on the USS Saratoga the ship received Presidential Commendation. After his tour of duty he returned home to Madera.

Freddie married Yola Mugnolo in 1945, he owned and operated Fred Crosson Plumbing and later he joined the Pipe Traders Union #36, for which he worked as a plumber until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Yola Mugnolo Crosson, his sons Allen Crosson and his wife Mary Ann of Madera, CA, Barry B. Crosson and his wife Patti of Madera, CA, four grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 4, 2005 2:00 - 8:00 PM at Jay Chapel in Madera. Funeral service will be held Friday, August 5, 2005 11:00 AM at Jay Chapel with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to the Donors Favorite Charity.

Pedro J. Avila, age 71, a native of the island of Saô Jorge in the Azores, passed away at his home in Chowchilla on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 after a brief illness. Pedro was a self-employed Dairy Farmer and Almond grower in rural Madera County. He immigrated to the United States in 1967, originally settling in the south valley in the Tulare and McFarland areas and later to Kingsburg where he leased a dairy before finally moving and building his own dairy in Chowchilla in 1990, with the eventual addition of Almond orchards to his operation. He was proud of his Portuguese heritage and the success he had achieved in farming in spite of having immigrated to the United States with little more than his two suit cases. Pedro was well known in and supportive of the numerous Portuguese groups in the Valley.

Pedro is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Filomena Frutuoso Avila, his daughters, Isilda Fagundes and her husband Francisco, and Elizabeth Craig and her husband Steven all of Chowchilla. He is the brother of Joao Avila, Maria Oliveira and Filomena Avila all of the Azores. He is the beloved “Avo” of Mark, Frank and Steve Fagundes, and Lleyton Craig.

Visitation will be Monday, August 8, 2005 from 2 to 7 PM in Jay Chapel of Madera with a Vigil Rosary Service following at 7 PM, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. in St. Joachim Catholic Church in Madera, Entombment will follow in Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.

Remembrances may be made to Hinds Hospice in Madera, P.O. Box 1325, Madera, CA, 93639-1325.

Antonio Meza “Tony ” Flores

Tony Flores, age 92, a native of Albuquerque, NM and a resident of Madera, CA for 83 years passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at a Fresno hospital. Tony was a mechanic at El Peco Ranch for 50 years. Tony enjoyed gardening and fixing cars and he helped with the construction of St. Agnes Chapel in Ripperdan. He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine in 1990.

Tony is survived by his eight daughters, Stacy Cortez and her husband Marcel of Caruthers, CA, Jennie Flores of Los Angeles, CA, Ann Flores, Michele Flores, Vickie Jones, Veronica Hahn, Patsy Flores and Anna Barajas & her husband Alfonso all of Madera. His two sisters, Beatrice Gonzales of Madera and Della Cerkuiera of Fresno, CA. He was the grandfather of 26 and great-grandfather of 11.

Visitation will be on Sunday, August 7, 2005 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera. The Vigil service will be on Sunday, August 7, 2005 at 6:00 P.M. also at Jay Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, August 8, 2005 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Joachim Catholic Church with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Madera.

Neta Ruth Runnels

Neta Ruth Runnels passed away on Wednesday August 3, 2005 at the age of 66. A native of Holdenville, OK, she was the daughter of Albert and Chessie Price Skaggs. As a child she moved to Madera, California where she has resided most of her life. She attended the former Sharon School in Madera and later went on to attend college in South Carolina. Neta was a retired psychiatric technician for the State of California and later was a Day Care Provider for many years. In addition to her parents Neta was preceded in death by a brother, Emory Dwayne Skaggs, and by her son-in-law Charles Cisco.

Neta is survived by her husband of 35 years, Jack K. Runnels, of Madera, her children, Deborah Cisco of Madera, and Rick Dockery and his partner Dr. Troy Ha of Long Beach, CA. She is the cherished grandmother of Cynthia Dockery and Christopher Cisco and the great grandmother of Kyle Parker and Haven Parker.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 7, 2005 from 2 to 8 PM at Jay Chapel in Madera. Funeral Service will be Monday, August 8, 2005 at 10:30 AM also at Jay Chapel with services concluding at the chapel. A private family committal service will be held at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.

Robert “Bobby” Chairez

Bobby Chairez, age 54, a native and lifelong resident of Madera, CA passed away Saturday, August 6, 2005 at his home. He was a Mechanic I in charge of the Baltibond line at Baltimore Air Coil where he worked for 32 years. He graduated from St. Joachim School, San Joaquin Memorial and attended Fresno City College. He was a member of St. Joachim Catholic Church. Bobby was a loving family man who’s favorite past time was hanging out with his family.

Bobby is survived by his wife of 22 years, Dee Chairez of Madera, his parents Mary Cruz & Robert Chairez of Madera, his six children: Ryan Chairez, Julie Chairez, Tiffany Chairez, April Mendez, Joseph Chairez and Anthony Chairez all of Madera, his brother Alfred Chairez of Madera and his sister Debbie Chairez also of Madera.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 11, 2005 from 2:00 P.M. to 5:30 P.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera with a vigil service that same evening at 7:00 P.M. at St. Joachim Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 12, 2005 at 9:00 A.M. at St. Joachim Catholic Church with interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Madera.

Elizabeth Katherine Scalise

Elizabeth Katherine Scalise, 85, passed away in Madera, CA on August 6, 2005 after a lengthy illness. She was born icon in Yatesboro, PA on March 9, 1920, the daughter of Julianna Yuhaz Zeigler and Julius Zeigler who had both emigrated from Hungary. She grew up in Leechburg, PA where she graduated from Leechburg High School in 1937. She lived in Pittsburgh, PA for 37 years, in St. Petersburg, FL for 25 years, and since 1998, had resided in Madera, CA. For many years she was the supervisor for the Accounts Payable Department of Joseph Horne’s in Pittsburgh. She later held a similar position at Robinson’s in Florida. She served as a Girl Scout Leader and as president of the Beechwood School PTA. She loved to cook, to sew and to read, and will be remembered for her kind nature, her faith in God, her dignity and quiet courage, and for her devotion to her family.

Mrs. Scalise was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, John Scalise, by her sisters, Margaret Grajczar and Anna Zeigler and her brother, Julius Zeigler. She is survived by two daughters: Betty Scalise of Madera, CA and Dorothy Scalise Disney and husband David of Mechanicsburg, PA. She is also survived by five grandchildren: David Stewart and wife Sasha of Broomfield, CO, Gregorio Scalise and wife Terra of Madera, Domingo Scalise of Madera, Sara Scalise Dawson and husband Curt of Guilford, CT and Michael Stewart of Atlantic City, New Jersey; 8 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and by her gentle, devoted caretaker, Ana Maria Ugarte of Madera.

The family wishes to thank the Station 5 staff at the Madera Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center for their care and many kindnesses.

A Vigil service will be on Wednesday, August 10, 2005, 7:00 P.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera, CA. Memorial Mass will be on Thursday, August 11, 2005, 2:00 P.M. at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Madera, CA. Her ashes will be buried at Queen of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in Peters Township, Pittsburg, PA.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent in her memory to the Beechwood School Library, 810 Rockland Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15216 or to the Leechburg Elementary School Library, 200 Siberian Avenue, Leechburg, PA 15656.
