At the age 62 a native of Puerto Rico and a resident of Madera, CA for 33 years passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2006 at a Fresno hospital. She was a homemaker and a member of the Faith Tabernacle UPC in Madera.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Roberto Martinez of Madera, her son Roberto Martinez Jr. and is wife Nancy of Madera, her two daughters, Iliana Figueroa and Ana Perez and her husband Graciano all of Madera, her brother Victor Rodriguez of Puerto Rico and her two sisters, Mercedes Rodriguez of Brooklyn, NY and Justina Rodriguez of Puerto Rico. She was the grandmother of Veronica, Marisabel, Anthony, Jonathon & Nathanial

Visitation will be on Thursday, February 16, 2006 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Faith Tabernacle UPC, 745 North “H” Street in Madera. Funeral Services will be on Friday, February 17, 2006 at the Faith Tabernacle UPC. Interment will be at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.

Richard Peter Padgett was born icon March 10, 1929 in Norwich, New York. He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Darlene, and his children: son Randy Padgett and his wife Carol of Panguitch, Utah; son David Padgett and his wife Carrie of Madera, son Paul Padgett and his wife Michelle of Madera, and daughter Lorna Souza and her husband Manuel of Catheys Valley, CA, and is also survived by his sister Phyllis Beard and her husband William of Hagerstown, MD. He also leaves 12 grandchildren: Amy Blosch of Salt Lake City, UT; Joshua Rapp of Fresno, CA; Amber Padgett of Fresno; Laura Brickey of Fresno; Erin Mercado of Fresno; Alyson Padgett of Madera; Taryn Swift of Hanford, CA; Betsy Braselton of Catheys Valley, CA; Cory Padgett of Madera; Jacob Souza, Katie Souza and Nathaniel Souza all of Catheys Valley, CA; and 3 great-grandchildren: Dupree Blosch of Salt Lake City, UT; Evelyn Swift of Hanford, CA & Clover Braselton of Catheys Valley, CA. He also leaves his Mother-In-Law Bessie Walter; Sisters-In-Law, Charlotte Steinert & Candy Nelson and her husband Jack; Brother-In-Law Charles Walter and his wife Patty and many nieces and nephews.

Richard served in the Air Force and was stationed at Castle Air Force Base where he met his future wife, Darlene Walter of Chowchilla, CA. He joined the California Highway Patrol in 1956 serving in Barstow and Madera. He retired in 1983 and then began a second career as a licensed embalmer at Jay Chapel. He retired for the second time in 1997.

Richard was diagnosed with cancer in April of 1999. He recovered after surgery and chemotherapy and enjoyed several active years. The cancer returned in 2004 and he once more began a chemotherapy and radiation regime. He never gave up; even as his body grew weaker, his will to live remained strong. He entered Heaven on February 16, 2006 in Madera, CA surrounded by family.

Even though we grieve for ourselves, we rejoice in knowing where he is today: with his Savior, running and dancing, breathing easily with great big gulps of air, with no more gasping of coughing. He’s shuffling the cards and challenging a new bunch of friends to a game of cribbage.

The family would like to thank all of Richard’s caregivers; Dr. Padmanabhan, Dr. Sekhon, the Cancer Center and the staff of Hinds Hospice. Richard appreciated all you did for him, and so do we. Richard and Darlene’s church family, extended family and lodge family have been a huge support during Richard’s illness and we thank you for all you have done and for all you will do for Darlene in the days ahead.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Wednesday, February 22, 2006 from 8:00 A.M. to 11:30 A.M. both at Jay Chapel in Madera, CA. The Funeral Service will be on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, 1111 West Yosemite Avenue in Madera. Interment will follow at Arbor Vitae Cemetery in Madera.

Calvin Woodrow Croom

Calvin Woodrow Croom was born icon on December 4, 1918, in White Bead, OK. In 1920 his family moved to California where Cal worked in the orange groves and picked cotton. He enlisted in the U.s. Air Force in 1940 where he spent 21 years before retiring in 1963. During his time in the Air Force, he was part of the legendary Flying Tigers. After his retirement from the Air Force, Cal began working for the Madera Welfare Department. He was an administrative officer in both Madera and Butte counties until his final “retirement” in 1981.

Cal was blessed by two wonderful marriages. He married Alta Pries in 1944. While he was serving in the Air Force, Alta gave birth to one of their children in occupied Japan. He lost in Alta in 1965. In 1966, Cal married Judy Wilcox, Judy brought her two children to the marriage and together they created a wonderful blended family at a time when blended families were still unusual. They would have celebrated their 40th anniversary in September.

Cal spent many summer weekends “deer camping” with his friends. His favorite activity was tinkering both in his workshop and outside. He liked to describe working outside in the winter as “shirt-sleeve weather”. As a child of the depression, he believed that everything could and should be put to use in another way and manner. He built a beautiful barn on his Madera farm entirely out of recycled materials.

Cal will be remembered for his unique sense of humor and his love of the outdoors.

Cal was a devoted member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite and Shriners. He and Judy were also active in the Eastern Star.

Cal was predeceased by his son Steven.

He is survived by his sister “Dinky” Bernice Marcotte of Oklahoma; his wife Judy; his children, Patricia Rose of Montana, Linda Croom of New Mexico, Karen Croom of Colorado, Rebecca Daley of Florida, Kathy Platnick of Los Angeles and David Croom of Arizona; as well as 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

We will be celebrating Cal’s life at a Memorial Service at the Madera United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Scottish Rite Childhood Language Disorders Center, 1435 L Street, Fresno, CA. 93721.

Mr. Paul Dorn, age 97, a native of Paducah, TX and a resident of Madera, CA passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2006 at a Madera hospital. He was a farmer and an active member of The Grange.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife Hazel and two sons, Frank and Raymond.

He is survived by his daughter Linda Cheek and her husband Terry of Fresno, CA and daughter-in-law Shirley Dorn of Clovis, CA. He was the grandfather of 7 and great-grandfather of 16 and one great-great grandchild survives along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Thursday, February 23, 2006 from 8:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. both at Jay Chapel in Madera.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, February 23, 2006 at 1:00 P.M. at Jay Chapel in Madera. Interment will follow at Chowchilla District Cemetery in Chowchilla, CA.

William Joseph “Bill” Schletz

Mr.William Joseph Schletz, 85, a native of Vaters Montana, and a 60 year resident of Firebaugh passed away suddenly on Monday February 20, 2006. William operated a Custom Harvesting business in the Firebaugh area for 34 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving in World War II. In Firebaugh William was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

William is survived by his wife of 59 years Mary Cardella Schletz of Firebaugh, his sons Mark and Jeff Schletz of Clayton CA., Brian Schletz and his wife Susan of Yorba Linda, CA. and Jon Schletz and his wife Susan of Alamo, CA. his daughter Cindy Schletz of Clovis and by his brother Ray Schletz and his wife Gertrude of Montana. He is the grandfather of 5 grandchildren, Justin, Eric, Brianna, Colin and Dante.

Visitation will be Monday, February 27, 2006 from 5 to 7 PM in St. Joseph’s Church in Firebaugh, followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM, Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 10 AM also in St. Joseph’s Church, interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Fresno.

Remembrances may be made in William’s name to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Firebaugh, St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Firebaugh, or to The Donor’s Favorite Charity.

James Cecil “J.C.” Crawley

James Cecil Crawley, 71, died peacefully in San Luis Obispo, CA on Saturday February 18, 2006.

He was born icon April 9, 1934 in McAlester, Oklahoma. After his release from the army in 1951 he moved to Fresno and was a proud member of the Fresno Community for over forty years. JC was a local State Farm Insurance Agent for 39 years and an avid Dodger and San Francisco 49 Fan.

He was the proud Father of his only son and for whom he lived breathed each day of this life for, James Ryan Crawley. He is survived by his wife Roxana of 29 years, three step children, Karri, Nicole and Robert including five grandchildren, Landon, Roni, Cami, Lilly, and Jade.

JC deeply touch and change many of our lives through his humor and great laughter and will be remembered always in our hearts.

A graveside service will be held at Belmont Memorial Park on Friday February 24th at 2:00 with a gathering in celebration of JC’s life immediately following.

Remembrances in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Heart Association.

Renato was born icon in Firebaugh, California on September 8, 1913, and passed away on Wednesday, February 22, 2006 in Fresno. He was the single child of Italian Immigrant parents, Amedeo Landucci, and Oliva Riccomini.

Renato married Edda Biondi June 26, 1938, and they remained married for 67 years. They lived in the same house in Firebaugh all of these years.

As a livelihood, Renato was in the Insurance and real estate business for 50 years. He served Firebaugh’s and the westside’s business needs for all of these years.

As an avocation, Renato served as mayor of Firebaugh at age 24, the youngest in the state at the time, he also served on the Firebaugh City Council for many years. The well being of the people of the city of Firebaugh was always a passion for him throughout his long life.

Renato is survived by his wife Edda Landucci of Firebaugh; son, Donald Landucci of Fresno, nieces, Beverly Mancebo of Dos Palos, Marlene Frankeberger of Fresno, nephew, Ralph Tucci of Fresno, and cousin, Franco and Theresa Pera of Manteca.

Renato was a compassionate and loving husband and father whose life revolved around his family and friends.

Rosary will be recited on Thursday, March 2, 2006, 9:30 at AM in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Firebaugh, California. Followed by the Mass of Christian Burial, which will be celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Madera, California.

Remembrances may be made to Children's Hospital of Central California, The American Kidney Foundation, or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Firebaugh.
