80 years, 5 months, 17 days

Obituary:
Van Guilder Richard was born in the Township of Bancroft, MN to Samuel and Jessie in 1928. The son of a potato farmer, Dick grew up on a farm in rural Albert Lee, MN. He enlisted in the United States Navy at age seventeen during the last year of WWII. He later transferred to the Army Air Corp, then was one of the first to be part of the newly formed U.S. Air Force. He married his first love on May 11, 1951 and went on to father and raise five children: Richard Jr., Mike, Tom, Cheri, and Donna.
After twenty years of military service as a postal clerk, he retired and bought a small farm in Livingston, CA where he went back to his roots and did a little farming and worked on a local dairy. He then went to work for the United States Post Office where he served another twenty years before retiring a second time.
Not satisfied with just complaining about what was wrong with his community, he decided to try to do something to change things and served five years on the Livingston City Council with one of those years as the city mayor. Because he was always an advocate of youth programs, he donated his councilman’s salary to the Livingston Youth Recreational Department. At times, Dick could be an ornery and stubborn man, but he cared greatly for others, his community, and especially his family. He was always very proud of his children and kept track of their accomplishments as they made their way through life. He was especially proud of the grandchildren and great grandchildren he was blessed with. Not a man who could express his love easily with words, he would show his love in many other ways. Whenever one of his kids ran into any difficulties he would be the first to be there to help to pick them up.
Richard was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Livingston Lions Club and Air Force Sgt. Assoc.
Richard is survived by his wife Alice; children Richard Van Guilder, Jr. of Rio Rancho, NM, Michael Van Guilder of Delhi, Thomas Van Guilder on Moapa, NV, Cheri Van Guilder of Livingston, and Donna Jesion of Salida; sister Betty Tahlamka of Albert Lee, MN, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. His children would like to say, “Dad we love you very much, we thank you for all you have done, and will miss you.”
