Obituary:
Skonovd - Ruth Skonovd ~89, of Hughson passed away at Emanuel Hospital in Turlock, just before midnight on Wednesday, after a brief illness. She was born Ruth Christine Johnson in June of 1919, in Modesto, California and christened in the Lutheran Church. Her parents, Abraham and Anna Johnson were natives of Norway. She had an older brother Arthur and a younger brother, Stanley.
Compared to the busy pace of life today, Ruth’s childhood sounds like that portrayed in the television series The Waltons. Growing up on a large grain ranch, east of Modesto, CA, she attended the two-room Robert’s Ferry Grammar School, Oakdale High School and did her homework by kerosene lamp.
Ruth graduated from Modesto Jr. College in 1939 and attended San Jose State College. Her college career was cut short due to serious back problems and she underwent back surgery in San Francisco in 1940.
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Ruth started and managed an enemy plane spotting operation out of an old bunkhouse on her parents’ ranch in Montpellier.
She met her future husband Norman Skonovd, during the war years. They were married shortly after he returned from Europe on July 14, 1946. Shortly afterward, they purchased a farm on Monte Vista Avenue and eventually planted it with almonds and grapes. Her first son, Vern, was born in 1949 and her second, Brian, in 1953.
From the time she was a young woman Ruth was very active in the Barmont Club, which was a social organization formed by families who had grain ranches in the Montpellier area. She was very active in the parents’ organizations at the Denair Unified Schools, serving as room mother several times and actively participating in fundraising efforts for various school projects. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years at the Beulah Covenant Church and later at Monte Vista Chapel.
Her husband, Norman, died in 1994 and she continued to oversee the operation of the ranch after he died. She moved to Samaritan Village in 2007, joining long-time friend Isabel Schmidt and other senior friends and acquaintances from the area. She participated in the exercise classes at Samaritan and enjoyed its round of social and entertainment activities. She was a regular attendee at the Chapel Services at Samaritan Village every Sunday.
Although she had been challenged with a lung ailment for over thirty years and a fractured hip in 2007, Ruth continued an active lifestyle and drove her own car as recently as three weeks ago. She delighted in family gatherings and took a strong interest in her children and grandchildren’s lives. The birth of a great-granddaughter, Hannah, three years ago, and great-grandson, Jackson earlier this year, added great joy to her life.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Stanley Johnson and Arthur Johnson. She leaves her two sons, Vern Skonovd and Brian Skonovd, a devoted daughter-in-law Andrea Skonovd, four grandchildren: Matthew, Michael, Kristian and Erik, two great-grandchildren and two close decades-long friends Isabel Schmidt and Mabel Cree and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Please make memorial contributions to
DISABLED AMERICAN VETERANS
P.O. Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 or online at www.dav.org. Ruth supported this organization and made donations regularly.
