Russell M. Johnson
1916-2004

A memorial service will be held at a later date for former Eastern Sierra resident Russell M. Johnson, 88.

Born May 3, 1916 in Fergus Falls, Minn., Russ lived most of his adult life in Inyo and Mono counties. He died July 28, 2004 at his residence in Kealia, Hawaii.

During World War II, Russ worked as a tool and die maker at Consolidated Aircraft in San Diego. After he and his wife bought McGee Creek Pack Station in 1951, Russ switched from mules to missiles during the winters, working as liaison on the first Atlas missile built.

Later, the winter switch was to Chalfant Press, where he did design layout, photography and completely revamped the building for the new rotary offset press.

Russ was a board member of Death Valley National Historic Assoc. for more than 30 years, and former president of both the Death Valley '49ers and the Eastern Sierra Packers' Association.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anne Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions to Laws Railroad Museum or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, Gift Processing Center, P.O. Box 96268,  Washington, D.C. 20077-7487.

Billy Edward Scott [1921-2004]
Betty Jean Scott [1925-2004]

Private funeral services were held recently for longtime Eastern Sierra residents Betty Jean Scott and Billy Edward Scott. Betty Jean died on July 8, 2004. Billy Edward died on June 24, 2004.

Billy was born on Sept. 10, 1921 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Betty was born on Oct. 25, 1925 in Boron. They both lived in Inyo and Mono counties for 42 years

Billy and Betty started Sierra Pluming Service in Mammoth Lakes in 1962. Billy was a 51-year member of the Plumber, Steamfitters and Refrigerator Fitters Local Union No. 467. After retirement in 1982, he enjoyed working for Inyo County, doing various jobs. Billy also loved to golf and work in his wood shop. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. Billy was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

Betty was a homemaker, artist and gardener. She loved the mountains, desert and sea. Her beautiful stained glass work is what most people will remember her for. She was a loving mother, wife, grandmother and friend. Betty was loved by all that knew her. Her laugh will never be forgotten. She was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Billy and Betty are survived by their daughter, Suzan Scott of Big Pine; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Vicki Scott of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; daughter and son-in-law, Shary and Lon Adams of Bishop; Betty's brother, Robert Baker of Paradise; Betty's sister, Margie Tochinni of San Mateo; their grandchildren, Lisa Newman of Roi, Utah, Mark Russo of Colorado Springs,  Colo., Christopher R. Scott of Colorado Springs,  Colo. and Sarah and Molly Adams of Bishop; great-grandchildren, Dustin and Wesley Newman of Roi, Utah, Leah and Alyssa Russo of Colorado Springs,  Colo.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Donations in Billy's and Betty's names can be made to the Hospice of the Owens Valley and the American Lung Association.

"Mom and Dad, we love you more than words can say, and miss you more than language can ever explain," family members said.

Elaine Zoe Garrett
1937-2004

A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Bishop on Friday, July 23 at 10:30 a.m. for Elaine Zoe Garrett who died on July 17, 2004. Pastor Caddy  Jackson of First United Methodist Church will officiate the service. Interment will be private.

Elaine Zoe Garrett was born in Los Angeles on Jan. 21, 1937. She was 67 years old when she died.

Elaine was employed by First State Bank and Banco Poplar for 37 years. She spent several years as senior vice president and manager. She was well-known, loved and respected, as well as very active in Habitat for Humanity, the Hospice of the Owens Valley and Bishop AARP.

Elaine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Terry Booth of Hemet; daughters, Vickie Anderson of Porterville and Michelle Touehtone of San Clementine; mother, Edith Clearwater of Bishop; sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Fred Manecke of Big Pine; brother Bill Clearwater of Long Beach; 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren as well as numerous aunts uncles and cousins.

Donations in Elaine's name can be made to the Hospice of the Owens Valley.

Doris Alma McKee Taylor
1914-2004

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 20 at the First Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Mesa, Ariz., followed by a graveside service on Saturday, July 24 at 2 p.m. at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop.

Doris Alma McKee  Taylor was born on Dec. 2, 1914 into a family of 10 children. She was a native of Arizona, born and raised in Phoenix. In 1931 she graduated from Phoenix Union High School with honors, then attended Phoenix Junior College where she studied English and Business. After graduation she worked in the insurance business for many years, eventually transferring to southern California where she met and married her husband, Boyd Taylor, and had two children, Boyd, Jr. and Linda. In the mid ‘50s they relocated to the beautiful high sierra mountain community of Bishop and started a very successful law practice where Doris took on the responsibility of manager and legal secretary.

Already an accomplished pianist, she taught herself to play the church organ in order to fulfill a need in her church.

While raising her family and managing the law practice, she still made time to cook, garden and cultivate her beautiful home in the country near Bishop Creek. She had a great love and respect for all of the nature that encompassed her life. She loved animals and delighted in the companionship of her children and grandchildren.

In 1982, after her husband died, she returned to Arizona to be close to her family in Mesa. She became very active in the Church of the Redeemer, and later New Life Assembly of God and First Christian Church Disciples of Christ. She was an ardent "prayer warrior" and facilitated prayer chains within her church families.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Boyd Taylor; sister Helen Rohwer and four half sisters.

She is survived by her children, Boyd Taylor, Jr. and Linda  Taylor Coghill; her brother, Bill McKee; sisters, Frances Downey, Ruth Burns (Carl) and Rayma Moore; her six grandchildren, Adrian Coghill, Boyd  Taylor III (Rae), John Coghill (Tonya), William  Taylor (Kindra), Robert  Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor. She is also survived by seven wonderful great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Richard Leimbach
1932-2004

Funeral services will be private for 25-year Bishop resident Kenneth Richard Leimbach.

Kenneth died July 15, 2004 at his home in Bishop at the age of 71. He was born in Bakersfield on July 25, 1932.

Kenneth was a lifetime member of the Bishop VFW Post No. 8988.

He is survived by his loving wife, Myrtle Leimbach of Bishop; son, Steve Leimbach of Sultan, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Ivy Yarolimek Omaha, Neb.; daughters, Neina McCune of Apache Junction, Ariz. and Lorie Stockholm of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, DeeAnn and Barnell McDowell of Bishop; his sister, Janice Blanton of Bakersfield; as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bryson Moyer Kratz
1931-2004

Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Bishop on Saturday, July 24 at 3 p.m. for 24-year Bishop resident Bryson Moyer Kratz. Reverend John Nadasi of the United Methodist Church in Paonia,  Colo. will officiate the service. There will be no visitation and interment will be private.

Born on Oct. 2, 1931 in Los Angeles, Bryson died at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop on July 16, 2004. He was 72.

Bryson was an attorney for 45 years, and a member of the California State Bar Association, the American Legion Post in Bishop, the Inyo County Republican Central Committee and the National Rifle Association. Bryson was also involved with the annual Tournament of Roses and served in the United States Army.

Bryson is survived by his son, Bryson W. Kratz of Longmont, Colo; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Linda Hoenigsberg of Helena, Mont.; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and John Nadasi of Paonia,  Colo.; granddaughter, Jennifer Hoenigsberg of Helena, Mont.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Joanne Kratz of Palos Verdes; and loved one Gale Grove of Erie,  Colo.

Donations in Bryson's name can be made to the American Heart Association.
