James Henry Crowl
1949-2004

Funeral services will be held at the Brune & Buck Mortuary Chapel on Thursday, May 27 at 11 a.m. for lifelong Bishop resident James Henry Crowl. The service will be officiated by Pastor Stan Summers. Interment will be at Sunland Cemetery.

Born in Bishop on March 10, 1949 to Margaret and John Crowl, Sr., James died May 23, 2004. He was 55.

According to family members, Jim loved working in his yard and tending to his garden every summer. He took great pride in his home and everyone was welcome there. Jim was always available when asked for his assistance with everything from wood gathering to yard work. He was a talented artist and carved beautiful wood sculptures. During a period of his life Jim worked as a miner and as a packer for the local pack stations. He enjoyed cooking for his friends and family and fishing and hunting. Jim's humor, unique laugh and most of all his generosity will be greatly missed, family said.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and John Crowl, Sr.

He is survived by his son, Rick Dewey of Reno, Nev.; three brothers, Tom Crowl, John Crowl, Jr. and Rudy Willis all of Bishop; two sisters, Jean Minard and Diane Tenerio, both of Bishop; aunts; Harriette Butler of Porter,  Texas, Joyce Crowl of Houston,  Texas and Bertha Willis of Bishop; his cousin, Mary Martinez of Bishop; and four grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and his long-time friend Pid of Bishop.

Victor Richard Llewellyn
1918-2004

Funeral services will be held at the Green Hills Chapel in Green Hills Memorial Park (27501 S. Western Ave.) in Rancho Palos Verdes at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26 for Bishop resident Victor Richard Llewellyn. Reverend Eric Scott of the First United Methodist Church of San Pedro will officiate the service.

Born on July 25, 1918 in Chattanooga, Tenn., Victor died on May 20, 2004. He was 85.

Victor lived in Bishop for 17 years.

Victor is survived by his daughter, Carol McGraw of Chalfant Valley; sons, William Llewellyn of Perris,  Calif. and Mike Llewellyn of San Pedro; brother, Pete Llewellyn of Atlanta, Ga.; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Janet Emily Hillis
1920-2004

Friends and family are saying goodbye to former Independence resident Janet Emily (Reinmuth) Hillis, who died April 28, 2004 in Placerville. She was 83.

Janet was born in Chicago on July 9, 1920 and graduated from Roosevelt High School in East Los Angeles. She attended Los Angeles City College.

She married the love of her life, Howard Hillis, on Dec. 18, 1939 in Carson City, Nev. They were approaching their 65th anniversary. Jan and Howard lived in Independence for 15 years in the 1970s and early 1980s. Since then they have lived in Placerville.

Her family includes her sister, Vera of Folsom, her brother, Verne of Eugene, Ore., her daughter, Judy Wolfe and her sons Raymond and Alan; along with 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Jan's creative energy was devoted to a number of paths. She promoted civil rights in the early 1960s and worked as a social activist dedicating time and energy to the poor. She was passionately involved as a Christian educator and spiritual director for youth. She used creative mediums for teaching and was remarkably open minded, family said.

When their children were young, Jan worked part-time selling Avon products. She was known for being creative in the kitchen and adventurous in exploring new ideas about cooking. She loved nature, and camping and backpacking trips with her family were a great joy for her. She was a wonderful landscape painter, and loved rose tending along with Howard. They won numerous ribbons at rose shows for their prize arrangements.

"Her spiritual and interpersonal legacy which she leaves with us for future generations is the wish that each of us find the life path that makes us most genuinely happy," loved ones said.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Federated Church, or The Salvation Army.

Royal Stanley Deming
1918-2004

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services for 53-year Bishop resident Royal Stanley Deming. Interment will be private.

Born in Westmorland, N.Y. on May 18, 1918, Royal died May 27, 2004 at the Bishop Care Center. He was 86.

Royal was the owner/operator of KIBS radio station for more than 20 years.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn M. Deming of Bishop; son and daughter-in-law, Craig A. and Yvonne Deming of Bishop; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly J. and Steven Bradshaw of Pacific Grove; and grandson, Aaron R. Bradshaw.

Louise Dougherty
1917-2004

A memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Bishop on Wednesday, June 2 at 1 p.m. for 59-year Bishop resident Louise Dougherty. Reverend Dan Willson officiated the service.

Born in Seymour, Ind. on May 23, 1917, Louise died on May 30, 2004 at the Bishop Care Center at the age of 87. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for many years, and was also a member of the Thursday Club at the Church of the Edison and of the Wive's Club.

Louise is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Janet and Gary Nauman of Sunnyvale, Sharon and Andy Bressoud of Santa Rosa and Linda and Monty Mountsier of Chico; and sons and daughter-in-laws, H. Dean, Jr. and Jeane Doughtery of Trinidad,  Colo., Robert "Rob" and Bette Dougherty of Noxon, Mont., and Gary "Gert" and Janet Dougherty of Bishop. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Donations can be made to the First Presbyterian Church in memory of Louise Dougherty.

Hilda Rose McCuin
1921-2004

Graveside services will be held at the Oak Hills Cemetery in Red Bluff on Saturday, June 5 at 3 p.m. for three-year Bishop resident Hilda Rose McCuin. Pastor Chris Costello from Oasis of Grace Bishop Four Square Church will officiate the service.

Hilda was born and raised in Red Bluff.

Hilda enjoyed nature, animals and story telling. She was also a very talented poet. One of her stories, "The Big Balloon," has been used to delight and capture the attention of children in and out of schools for years, loved ones said.

Hilda was a believer in Jesus Christ, and a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her memory will be cherished and her presence missed, family said.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William McCuin, and her son, Randy McCuin.

She is survived by her son, Wayne Purcell of Orland; daughters, Janice Hicks of Corning and Carol (Cooky) Kerr of Orland; and daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Glen Forehand of Bishop. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Donations can be made in Hilda's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.

Marguritte Catherine (Boyer) Rhoads
1921-2004

A memorial service was held on May 22 in Mountain Home, Ark., and a second service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Bishop on Saturday, June 5 at 11 a.m. for Marguritte Catherine Rhoads.

Marguritte was born on April 21, 1914 in Mansfield, Ohio and died on May 18, 2004 in Springfield, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 49 years, Robert Marsh Rhoads.

Marguritte is survived by her son, Robert Marsh Rhoads, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Lee and Jim Sack of Mountain Home, Ark.; four grandchildren, Nicholas A. Bell and wife Andrea of Oakland, Christopher R. Bell of Westchester; Darren Rhoads and wife Wendy of Henderson, Nev., and Gerald F. Bennett of Sacramento. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Rose Stone of Mansfield, Ohio; niece, Linda (Hemperly) Gundrum of Mansfield, Ohio; and a nephew, Russell Buell of Stockton.

Donations may be made in memory of Marguritte Rhoads to the American Cancer Society.
