Gladys Jean Torterello
1931-2004
A memorial service was held on April 21 to celebrate the life of Gladys Jean Torterello, who died on April 18, 2004.
Interment will be at Graceland Memorial Cemetery
in New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Torterello; sisters, Phyllis Perez and Ava Provence; brothers, John Harry, Bill Harry and Frank "Cooney" Harry.
Gladys is survived by her son, Joseph Torterello, his wife Pattie and their three children, Kim Torterello, Mattison Kari and Christopher Torterello; her great-granddaughter, Hailey Mattison; as well as nieces and nephews in the California and New Jersey areas.

Charles Edward Chitty
1924-2004
A graveside service was held at East Lawn Sierra Hills Cemetery
in Sacramento on May 28 for Charles Edward Chitty, who died of heart disease on May 24, 2004.
Charles Chitty was born in Fort Scott, Colo. on Sept. 26, 1924 to Ruth (Bean) Chitty and Thomas Clifford Chitty.
His father was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy, and Charles attended school in Fort Scott, Colo. and Honolulu before graduating High School in Jacksonville, Fla. in 1942.
He studied at the University of Kansas for one year before leaving to serve his country as a Naval Aviator.
After the war, he was honorably discharged, and returned to KU.
There he met the love of his life Erma Lea Volkel, and they were married in her hometown of Lenora, Kan. in 1947.
Charles earned a BS in civil engineering in 1948.
After working briefly for an oil company in Texas and Oklahoma, he moved to San Luis Obispo in 1950 where he began working for the California Division of Highways (later Caltrans).
He worked in highway planning, design and construction and became a registered civil engineer.
During their years in San Luis Obispo, he and Erma Lea had three children, and together completed a construction project that nearly doubled the size of their house.
In 1963 he became District Planning Engineer in Bishop.
In that role he had extensive contact with the public, as he represented the state in the highway planning process, and was well known and respected by businesses and community leaders throughout the Eastern Sierra.
In Bishop Charles was also elected to two terms on the Bishop Union High School Board of Trustees.
His Caltrans career advanced further with his 1973 promotion and transfer to Sacramento, where he was responsible for the design and acquisition of construction and maintenance equipment.
The final assignment of his Caltrans career was Chief of the Office of Highway Maintenance.
Upon retirement in 1989, he spent time in Vermont helping his son build a house.
He later started a vending business, which he operated for more than 10 years with his other son.
Throughout his life, Charles was devoted to his family, always ready to help wherever needed.
He loved woodworking, and took pride in being able to fix almost anything with almost nothing. He also participated in countless projects with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.
He is survived by his wife, Erma, of 56 years; a brother, Joseph of Napa; a sister, Diane Harper of Redondo Beach; two sons, Daniel and his wife Diane Alexander of Barnard, Vt., and David of Visalia; four grandsons, Christopher, Allen, Steven and his wife Annie and Benjamin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Doris Mcnally Hopkins
1911-2004
A graveside service will be held at the Pioneer Cemetery
on Wednesday, June 9 at 11 a.m. for Doris Hopkins.
Reverend Beverlee Hurlbert of the Chapel of Grace Church in Bakersfield and the granddaughter of the decedent will officiate.
Pastor Kenton Puls of the Grace Lutheran Church in Bishop will give the blessing.
Doris was a native of Bishop and a graduate of Bishop Union High School.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1911 and died in Bishop of June 6, 2004. She began her career as a telephone operator with California Interstate Telephone Company in 1949.
In June of 1955 she was promoted to a supervisory position and retired in September of 1976.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard of Bakersfield and Donald of Bishop and their wives Laureen and Janeane; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Marjory May Booth
1925-2004
Services will be held Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. at the Owens Valley Mortuary Chapel in Lone Pine for 14-year Lone Pine resident Marjory (Marj) May Booth, age 78.
Rev. Father John Burns of Santa Rosa Catholic Church will officiate the services, which will be followed by private interment at the Mt. Whitney District Cemetery.
Marjory died March 29, 2004 at Ridgecrest Regional Hospital in Ridgecrest.
She was born Aug. 19, 1925 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Charles J. and Sarah Cabral Parsons.
She was 16 when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Along with her two sisters, Marjory remembered gathering shrapnel after the bombing.
Marjory was one of the first to earn the Accredited Record Technician (ART) degree and worked in the healthcare industry.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lone Pine Post 8036, the Southern Inyo Artisans Guild and the Lone Pine Film Festival Committee Election Board.
Marjory is survived by her son, Paul Booth of Lone Pine; daughter, Rhoda E. booth of Lone Pine; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah L. and Bill Clifton of Lakeside; and seven grandchildren, LeiHala Booth and husband Ashton, James Booth, Charles Booth, Elizabeth Booth, Ricia Booth, Emily Clifton and Michael Clifton.
Joan Hugelman
1933-2004
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 3 at Brune & Buck Mortuary Chapel in Bishop for longtime local Joan Hugelman, who died March 12, 2004 in Palm Desert.
Pastor Chris Costello will officiate.
Joan was born Oct. 1, 1933 to Alexander and Mildred Jackson in Ft. Lewis, Wash.
She married Charles Hugelman on May 15, 1956 in Upland.
Joan later lived in Bishop, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Chicago Title and was a member of the Northern Hospital Auxiliary.
She was also employed at one time by Bank of America in Ontario.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hugelman.
She is survived by her daughter, Laurie Haskell of Bermuda Dunes; son, Eric Hugelman of Crowley Lake; sister, Sharon Oelrich of Boise, Idaho; and three grandchildren.
Family asked that donations in Joan’s name be made to ICARE’s animal welfare program in Bishop.
Grant William Strong
1980-2004
A celebration of life was held March 31 in Helena, Mont. for former Bishop resident Grant William Strong, age 23.
Grant was born October 7, 1980 in Dinuba, and spent the first years of his life in Bishop with his parents and grandparents.
He spent many hours with his grandfather, learning to love all of nature and the outdoors, which he carried with him throughout his life.
Grant and his parents left Bishop and settled in Greeley Hill before moving to Phoenix, Ariz. and then to Montana in 1993.
He attended Helena Middle School and Capital High in Helena, Mont.
He played baseball for the Helena Babe Ruth League all through school.
Grant loved to fish, hunt and camp. He worked at Great Divide as a lift operator just so he could snowboard.
He also loved the ocean and would spend the summers with his dad and stepmom at the beaches in Southern California, where he would also bodysurfand boogie board.
“Grant was so full of life and loved to make people laugh,” loved ones said. “Anyone that knew him will remember his electric smile; he could light up a room and melt your heart.”
Grant hired on with a roofing company and he got to travel and learn a trade.
He worked in St. Louis, Mo., Scotts Bluff, Neb. and Manassas, Va.
He was working for Carroll College at the time of his death.
He is survived by his parents, Cogie and Bob Back (formerly of Helena), and Steve and Linda Strong of Windsor, Colo.; his partner in life, Sara Salle of Helena; sisters, Michelle Arnold of Fernley, Nev., Lesa and Jennifer Back of Kingman, Ariz., Roni Cortese of Ridgecrest, Christine Arture of Brandon, Miss. and Lori Arture of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and uncles, John Bellona of Gardnerville, Nev. and Walt Bellona of Bishop.
“Grant will be missed by all that had the opportunity to know him,” family said. “He was full of life, love and laughter.”
