Albina Bianca Angela Masaro Domenico DeRose Brinton
Sept. 3, 1912, Denver,  Colo. – Dec. 20, 2004, Ventura,  Calif.
Albina DeRose Brinton, a former resident of Carpinteria, died in her home surrounded by her family amidst tears, songs and laughter. At 92 years young, she departed gracefully, completing a long and creative life as an artist, teacher, social and political activist, and an inspiration, friend and kindred spirit to many.
Among her accomplishments, she visited the gypsies in Denver,  Colo. when she was kidnapped by them as an infant and recovered by her relatives the next day. Much later in life, she was instrumental in organizing the passing of anti-pole tax legislation during World War II, while her husband John Brinton was overseas, continuing their political work. In the late 1950s, she organized and taught the first children’s art classes at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She taught for many years at the late Camarillo State Hospital, and continued painting and helping others throughout her life.
We enjoyed stories of her accidental hobby of encountering famous people; among these, being held in the arms of Buffalo Bill as a baby, chatting with Edward G. Robinson at a museum, finding herself taking the same photograph side by side with Ansel Adams in Yosemite, and sitting in a lobby when the skirts of Eleanor Roosevelt brushed her legs. She herself is renown in the hearts of those who knew her for her inexhaustible kindness and her passionate enjoyment of life. We will miss her.
Albina is survived by her daughter, Valerie Rose and family, Nancy Rose and their three children, Toby Shaw, Kaia Rose, and Tara Loughran, as well as numerous friends and relatives. A Memorial Ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Ventura,  Calif., at 4949 Foothill Road. Isabel had a special gift of seeing the good in everyone who crossed her path. She accepted and loved everybody exactly as they were and she always had a kind word and gorgeous smile for each and every person she met.
