Stanley Barr
Stanley Lee Barr, a former resident of Elk Grove, died March 14, 2002 in Rancho Cordova at the age of 41.
Mr. Barr was born Dec. 19, 1960 in Landcaster, and attended Cordova Gardens Elementary, Mitchell Junior High and Elk Grove High schools. He worked for the Folsom Cordova School District, where he was head custodian for nine years. In 1999 the district named him as Employee of the Year.
Hobbies included gardening, fishing, barbecuing, camping and trips to the ocean.
Mr. Barr is survived by his daughter, Brittany Barr; his sister, Colleen Foreman both of Sacramento; his aunt, Beryl Bollig of Eureka; and several cousins.
Services were held Thursday with interment at Camellia Memorial Lawn. Remembrances may be made in care of Brittany Barr at World Savings in Gold River.
Arrangements were by East Lawn Rancho Cordova.
David Porec
David B. Porec of Elk Grove died March 18, 2002 at the age of 41.
He was a master technician for Toyota for about 20 years, and enjoyed coaching softball and camping. He was also a member of E. Clampus Vitus Chapter 10.
Mr. Porec is survived by his wife, Kerry Porec; his daughter, Jessica; his nephew, Stephen; and his parents, Pete Porec and June Nowak and husband Robert.
He was the brother of Pamela Aston, Michael and Robert Porec, and is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services took place Saturday at South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove.
Donna McLain
Memorial services will take place Friday for Donna L. McLain, a 34-year resident of Elk Grove who died March 24, 2002.
Mrs. McLain was born Aug. 26, 1940 in Tacoma, Wash. She worked as a registered nurse for Sutter Memorial Hospital for over 30 years.
Mrs. McLain is survived by her husband of 38 years, Ken McLain of Elk Grove; her sons, Rusty and Michael also of Elk Grove; and grandchildren Matthew and Katelyn.
She was the sister of Alan Davenport of Detroit.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
Albert Ming
Funeral services will take place Thursday for Albert John Ming Sr., a longtime resident of Elk Grove who died Feb. 2, 2002.
Mr. Ming was born Feb. 21, 1911 in El Centro, and came to the Elk Grove area over 50 years ago where he was a dairyman.
He was a member of the San Joaquin Valley Swiss Club and Turn Verein of Sacramento. He loved Swiss wrestling, first as a participant and eventually as a spectator, and attended Swiss events up and down the coast.
He was preceded in death by his son, Albert Ming Jr.
Mr. Ming is survived by his wife, Katherine of Elk Grove; his children, Joann McCurdy of Davis and Helen Ming and John Ming and wife Carole of Elk Grove; and his grandchildren, Andrea Allen, Jolee Sanchez and husband Joe, Joey Ming and wife Kathy, Michael Loomis, Christopher Ming, Jonathan Ming, Patrick Ming, Matthew Ming and wife Kelly and Ady Ming.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren, Bryce Mulholland, Aria Allen, Andrew Loomis, Gretchen Ming and Hailey Ming; and his daughter-in-law, Marcia Ming.
Visitation is today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd. in Elk Grove. A funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Rd. Interment will follow in South East Lawn Memorial Park.
Antonette Fernandes
A funeral Mass begins at 10 a.m. today for Antonette (Toni) Fernandes of Elk Grove who died Feb. 1, 2002. She was born Nov. 25, 1918 in Oakland.
Mrs. Fernandes is survived by her husband of 65 years, John of Elk Grove; her sons, Robert and Ronald; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of Carmen Fernandez of Hayward.
The Mass will take place at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
Celesta Simas
Celesta Ann Simas of Elk Grove died Feb. 2, 2002 at home after a long battle with cancer. She was born Dec. 8, 1935 in Dixon to Bruce and Irma Tucker.
Mrs. Simas’ interests included her family, traveling and a love of animals. She was known as Grandma Lesta to her grandchildren, who remember her as fun-loving and spirited.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, David G. Simas; and her children, Chris Simas and wife Shelley, Craig Simas and wife Marisa, Pam Rappleye and husband Kevin, and David Bruce Simas.
Mrs. Simas was the grandmother of Court and Christian Simas, Brooke, Travis, Caitlin and Chad Simas, and Grant, Cameron, Trevor, Emily and Hunter Rappleye; and step-grandmother of Caprice and Casey Clyde.

Elowyn Osbourn
Elowyn R. Osbourn, a 50-year resident of Sacramento County, died Feb. 6, 2002 at the age of 74.
Mrs. Osbourn was born in Nebraska and moved to Elk Grove in 1963. She worked at the UCD Medical Center for 19 years.
In Elk Grove, she was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Her hobby was gardening, and her family said she could grow just about anything.
Mrs. Osbourn was preceded in death by her daughter, Danelle Adair.
She is survived by her son, Douglas Osbourn and wife Daryn of Lawrenceville, Ga.; her grandchildren, Dawna, Dyann, Devan, Darak, Daniel, Dustin, Deidra and Erin; and her great-grandchild Jayson.
She was the sister of Charles McNiff and Dolores Francis, both of Marysville.
Services took place Monday at Price Funeral Chapel in Citrus Heights followed by interment in Calvary Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to St. Joseph’s Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Rd., Elk Grove, CA 95624.
Timothy Elder
Timothy Raymond Elder, a resident of Elk Grove, died Feb. 9, 2002 at the age of 82.
Mr. Elder was a native of Washington and a veteran of World War II where he served with the U.S. Navy.
He enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting. He was also a member of the Masonic Order and the Shriners.
Mr. Elder is survived by his wife, Marcella; his daughter, Sharon Van Horn and husband Jeff; and his granddaughter, Victoria Michelle, all of Elk Grove.
Memorial services were held Tuesday at the Land Park Chapel of Harry A. Nauman & Son, Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Zachary Jacobs
Funeral services will take place Tuesday for Zachary M. Jacobs of Wilton who died Feb. 10, 2002 in San Diego at the age of 18.
Mr. Jacobs was born in Phoenix, Ariz. and came with his family to Elk Grove in 1987. He was a graduate of Elk Grove schools including Dillard Elementary, Joseph Kerr Middle and Elk Grove High, and was a student at San Diego State University at the time of his death.
“Everyone Zach met loved him,” said his father. “He had a real zest for life and was a gifted artist and poet.”
Mr. Jacobs is survived by his parents, Andrew and Robbie Jacobs of Wilton; his grandparents, Fred and Simone Zaga of Elko, Nev. and Barbara Jacobs of Chicago; and his great-grandparents, Livia Zaga of Elko and Jean Young of Fallon, Nev.
He was the brother of Martin, Zane, Angela and Ashley Jacobs all of Wilton; and the special friend of Andrea Cruz of Sacramento.
Visitation will be Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
Pastor Phil Oswald of Sun Grove Community Church will officiate at services on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Elk Grove, 8939 East Stockton Blvd.
