Paul Edwards
Paul E. Edwards, son of Albert and Cyndy Edwards of Elk Grove, died Jan. 3, 2002 in an automobile accident. He was 20.
Born Oct. 30, 1981, Mr. Edwards was employed by Sacramento County. His family said he was a free spirit with a great sense of humor who had a true love of life and lived each day to its fullest.
He is survived by his parents, Albert and Cyndy Edwards; his brother, Angela Edwards; his grandparents, Charles and Marilyn Geunther of Sacramento and Gwen Edwards of Shingle Springs, a large extended family and many loving friends.
Friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA, 6201 Florin-Perkins Road, Sacramento, Ca. 95828.

Bill Chapman
Bill Chapman, Sr., a 16-year resident of Elk Grove, died Jan. 4, 2002. He was 56.
A native of Lynwood, Mr. Chapman is survived by his wife, Shirley Chapman of Elk Grove; his children: James Chapmanof Sacramento and Anna Chapman, Bill Chapman, Jr. and Jodie Chapman, all of Elk Grove; and extended family, Robert Dunlap, Julie Barnes, Crystal Smith and numerous other relatives and friends.
Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 9 at noon in the First Baptist Church of Elk Grove, 8939 E. Stockton Blvd. Interment followed at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Frederick Fonda
Services will take place Thursday morning for Frederick A. Fonda of Elk Grove, who died May 16, 2002, at the age of 49.
Mr. Fonda was born in Sacramento and graduated from John Kennedy High School in 1971. He was the business owner/operator of Fonda & Sons Plumbing.
He enjoyed coaching his sons in the Elk Grove Bambino Baseball League as well as other youth sports, and was an avid hunter and golfer. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 20 years, a member of Valley Hi Country Club, donor to the CWA and charter season ticket holder for the Sacramento River Cats.
Mr. Fonda was preceded in death by his father, Staats Fonda, and sister, Kaye Strike.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sandy; his sons, Garrett and Aaron; his mother, Evelyn Fonda; his sisters, Linda Combs and Tisha Fonda; and his brother, Frank Fonda.
Visitation is today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Services begin at 10 a.m. Thursday, also at South East Lawn. A reception in the family home will follow.

Milon Johnston
Milon Johnston - Funeral services will take place Monday for Milon Lester Johnston, a fourth generation Californian who died Dec. 10, 2002, at the age of 90.
Mr. Johnston was born to Lester and Emma Johnston Jan. 31, 1912, on the family farm on Bruceville Road as was his father before him. He grew up in Elk Grove, graduating from Elk Grove High School and then attending Sacramento Community College.
The farm was one of the first pear orchards in the area. Mr. Johnston managed the farm for over 60 years, and according to his family, increased the variety of crops grown and significantly expanded the operation to over 1,000 acres with an 800 head Grade A dairy that won several production awards. Johnston Farms existed for 122 years, from 1878 until it was sold in 2000.
In conjunction with farming, he worked as a county assessor and served on the board of trustees of Franklin Elementary School.
Mr. Johnston followed in his father’s footsteps, working to support and help agriculture grow. He served on the board of the Federal Land Bank Association and the Elk Grove Irrigation District, and spent years on the boards of various fruit and vegetable cooperatives, including Cal Can, Tri Valley Growers, California Tomato Growers Association and the California Pear Growers Association.
He was a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West since 1934 and the Rotary Club of Elk Grove.
Just recently the Elk Grove Community Services District named a park after him which will be located on the former Johnston Farms property. “He was thrilled by the honor,” said his daughters.
Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Crosby Johnston, and his sister, Ida Fleming.
He is survived by the mother of his children, Elizabeth Johnston; his daughters, Linda Johnston-Panattoni of Sacramento, Lita Campbell and husband Michael of Clarksburg and Lori Frommer and husband Charlie of Glen Cove, N.Y.; his stepson, Ed Crosby and wife Katie; and seven grandchildren, Lynn, Mark and Alan Panattoni, Debra Panattoni-Tabak, Michelle Foster, Noelle Campbell and Jeremy Crosby.
Services will begin at 10 a.m. at W.F. Gormley & Sons, 2015 Capitol Ave. in Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to Sutter Hospice, 2800 L St., Suite 400, Sacramento, CA 95816.

Kenneth McKean
Kenneth R. McKean, a longtime resident of Wilton, died March 29, 2003 at the age of 72.
Mr. McKean was born June 8, 1930 in Sacramento, and grew up on the Wilton Rancheria. After graduating from Dillard Elementary and Elk Grove High schools, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served for eight years, receiving the Purple Heart while in Korea.
After his discharge he became a fireman in the civil service, first at Mather Air Force Base for 10 years and then at Castle Air Force Base in Merced for another 10 years. He retired as fire chief in 1980.
The family moved back to Wilton in 1989 and Mr. McKean became active in the Nature Conservancy, Caltrans and the state in preserving and protecting Indian burial grounds. He also enjoyed photography.
Mr. McKean was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth R. McKean Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna G. McKean of Wilton; his daughters, Laura Shemberg and Diana McKean of Harbor City and Robin McKean of Sacramento; his son, Paul McKean of Crescent City; and his grandchildren, Noel, Katie and Bailey Shemberg of Harbor City, and Breanne and Jacob McKean of Kerns, Utah.
Mr. McKean was the brother of Fred of Santa Rosa, Wayne of Orangevale, Charles of Carson City, Nev., Clifford of Wilton, Paul of San Leandro, Lloyd of Elk Grove and Marge Junkins of Carmichael.
No services were held at his request. Arrangements are by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Helen Mahon Reynolds
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 27 for Helen Mahon Reynolds, a 40-year resident of Elk Grove, who died March 21, 2003 at the age of 85.
Mrs. Reynolds was one of the organizers of the Elk Grove Historical Society and also founded the Grace Alltucker Memorial Library at the Elk Grove United Methodist Church.
Helen Joan Janssen was born Feb. 8, 1918 in Banning to Ruth Gandy Mack and Henry Janssen. She graduated from Oakdale High School and lived in Riverside for several years, marrying Gene Harris.
She moved to Elk Grove in 1946 and married Donal 'Top' Mahon. In 1949 she took a job as photographer for The Sacramento Bee and later was a field director for Project Hope for four years before starting on a real estate career in 1969 with Tom Kiernan Company of Sacramento.
According to her family, many clients were asked to share a cup of tea as she handed them her well-known signature, a tea bag, after knocking on their doors.
Mrs. Reynolds was a charter member of Lambda Theta Alpha, where she served as president and a model in the organization's annual fashion show. She also taught Sunday school and was a member of the church board at the Methodist Church.
On Nov. 19, 1983 she married John (Jack) Reynolds and for the next 19 years lived at his home in El Dorado. She became very interested in genealogy and the couple traveled extensively looking for cemeteries and courthouses, searching for ancestor information. They visited England, Ireland and the Holy Land in their travels. Mr. Reynolds preceded her in death after 17 years of marriage, and two years later, she moved back to Elk Grove.
While in El Dorado, Mrs. Reynolds became active in the Congregational Church in Shingle Springs, and also enjoyed collecting tea cups as a hobby.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Harris Billett and husband Frank of Oregon; her sons, Donal Nelmes Mahon Jr. and wife Beryl of El Cerrito, Alan J. Mahon of Carmichael and Roger D. Mahon and wife Joan of Elk Grove; grandchildren, Sheri Billett, Sean Billett, David Mahon, Teresa Stearns, Jesse Mahon, Zachary Mahon, Jason Mahon, Mathew Mahon and Scott Mahon; and great-grandchildren Bryant, Carson and Lauren Billett and Jason Stearns.
Mrs. Reynolds was the stepmother of Ramona Reynolds of El Dorado and Debra Snyder and Jeannie Lupkorski, both of  Washington. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment was in Elk Grove District Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to the Elk Grove Historical Society, P.O. Box 562, Elk Grove, CA 95759.

Bill Ward
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 9 for Bill R. Ward, a resident of Elk Grove for 63 years who died May 3, 2003.
Mr. Ward was born Dec. 26, 1926 in Blanco, Okla. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and then worked for the Sacramento Army Depot for 30 years.
He was a volunteer firefighter in the Elk Grove Fire Department. Hobbies included hunting, fishing and baseball, and, said his family, "just being around family."
Mr. Ward was preceded in death by his brother, John T. Ward; his sister, Bobbie Dean Ward; and his grandchildren, Kenneth Pylman and Sherry Ward.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elsie; his sons, Bill Ward Jr. of Mokelumne Hill, Richard Ward and David Pylman of Elk Grove; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Ward was the brother of Joyce Rice of Eufala, Okla. and Paul Ward of Roseburg, Ore.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. Friday in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment is private.
Remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 160126, Sacramento, CA 95816.
