John Manning
Memorial services will be held Friday, Aug. 4 for John W. Manning, a 34-year resident of Wilton who died July 21, 2006, at the age of 84.
Mr. Manning was born in Tennessee, one of 16 children. He joined the Army at age 16, four days after the Normandy invasion in World War II, and served as a medic with the 9th Army in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
Following the war he was a photographer, then dance instructor with the Arthur Murray Studios before joining the civil service with the Department of the Army. That career, which lasted 35 years before he retired, saw him wind up as Director of Quality Assurance with the Sacramento Signal Depot.
Mr. Manning was an electrician for Gangl Construction in Elk Grove and also did maintenance work for St. Pius Seminary on Twin Cities Road before it closed, and during the transfer to a correctional officer-training academy.
He was an inadvertent sponsor of the arts as his wife Dora Manning was an accomplished artist. The couple was married for 54 years before her death.
Mr. Manning is survived by his daughter Yvonne Manning and husband Steve; and grandchildren Kathryn Sharkey and Martin Manning, all of Wilton.
He was the brother of Jennie Clark and Paul Manning of Ohio and Howard Manning of North Carolina.
Friday’s services will begin at 11 a.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery will be private.

Barbara Wortell
Barbara (Bobbie) Wortell, mother of Chamber of Commerce Past President Mike Wortell, died July 28, 2006 in Sacramento.
She was a native of Sacramento and worked as a legal secretary for the Department of Justice for 40 years. She also worked part time for Macy’s, the Sacramento County Elections Office, Sacramento River Cats and the California State Fair.
Mrs. Wortell was a collector, specifically owls, cows, coins, first edition stamps and Pinocchios. Other interests included bingo, traveling with family and friends, mini-schnauzers and people watching.
She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Louise Gomes.
Mrs. Wortell is survived by her husband of 47 years Veryl Wortell; sons Michael Wortell and wife Denise, and Kevin; and brother Gerald Gomes.
Memorial services were held Aug. 5 at Nicoletti, Culjis & Herberger Funeral Home, Sacramento.
Remembrances may be made to the Sacramento Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 6201 Florin-Perkins Rd., Sacramento, CA 95828.

Richard Taylor
Richard James  Taylor died unexpectedly Aug. 1, 2006, less than one month after the passing of his mother, Irene Taylor, who died July 5.
Mr. Taylor, a lifelong resident of the Sacramento area, was 66.
He was an elder on the tribal counsel of the Wilton Miwok Rancheria in which he served as treasurer. He loved spending time with his family and playing with his four dogs.
Besides his mother, Mr.  Taylor was preceded in death by his father Lloyd Taylor; brothers Gary and Vernon; and wife Joanne.
He is survived by sisters Elaine and Sandra Taylor; children MaryAnn Keithley, Mark  Taylor and Kim  Taylor Uribe; and grandchildren Anthony, Eric and Chad.
Memorial services were held Aug. 6 at George Klumpp’s Chapel of Flowers in Sacramento.

Frederick Holthouse
Frederick J. Holthouse, longtime rancher and dairyman, died Aug. 3, 2006 at the age of 95 in Elk Grove.
The original Holthouse family ranch was located on the port of Moffett Field and Lockheed.
Mr. Holthouse moved to the ranch on Charleston Road in Mountain View in the 1930s. In the early 1980s he relocated to Elk Grove and raised registered Angus.
He was preceded in deathby his wife of 60 years, Hilda who died in 1992; daughter Theresa Penna in 1985; and son Paul Holthouse in 2000.
Mr. Holthouse is survived by daughters Ann Bunting of Lincoln and Helen Rebollo and husband Manuel of Auburn; son Leonard Holthouse and wife Linda of Gilroy; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was the brother of Bud Holthouse of San Juan Bautista and is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held Aug. 6 at Mountain View Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries in Mountain View. Interment was in Santa Clara Mission Cemetery, Santa Clara.

Marilyn Jean Willis
Marilyn Jean Willis, surrounded by family and friends, died from a chronic illness early Saturday morning, Aug. 5..
She was the mother of Jason and Derek Willis of Pasadena, sister in kind to Margie  Jones of Wilton, niece to Sally Sanders of Galt and Floyd Pyle of Los Angeles
Marilyn was born and raised in Sacramento and worked for 24 years as a CPA and accountant in the banking industry.
“She will be remembered for being a great mother friend, and person; but also as the strongest person we have ever encountered. Beating the odds on more than one occasion, she not only fought to the very end but she lived all the way to the end as well,” said Margie Jones, a special friend of Willis.
Years after doctors said Marilyn would not be able she continued to be very active in her Elk Grove community - competing in a bowling league, bridge clubs, bunko, pinochle, participating in the newcomers association, and traveling around the world.
 Jones said “there was one day difference in age from Marilyn and her with sequential Social Security numbers. Margie’s mother and father effectively were Marilyn’s mother and father.
Marilyn was forced to retire 18 years ago because of her terminal illness.
“Marilyn was the most courageous and strong-hearted person I have ever met. I am indeed honored to have known her and to call her a dear “member” of our family,” said Jones.
Friends are respectfully invited to attend memorial services Friday, Aug 11 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 E. Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove. Private cremation was held
In lieu of flowers, memorials in her memory are suggested to Woman Power Retreat, sponsored by Lewis and Clark AIDS project, P.O. Box 832 Helena, Montana 59624.

Esther Marie Williams
Esther Marie Williams died Aug. 19, 2006 at the age of 86 in Elk Grove.
Mrs. Williams was born March 4, 1920 in Roscoe, South Dakota. She was a member of the Elk Grove Senior Center and Writer’s Club. She will be remembered for her talents as a writer and an artist, along with dancing with her friends and her love of animals.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Williams, daughter Patricia Guthmiller, and nine sisters.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughter Marie Froehlich of Elk Grove; her grandchildren Terri Graham, Alan Guthmiller, Heidi Bates, Kristy Froehlich, Jill Froehlich, Heidi Arellano, and her numerous great-grandchildren, including her “princesses” Olivia and Hannah.
She was the sister of Herman Voegele of Sacramento and Lenhardt Voegele of South Dakota, along with Matilda Keisz and Anna Geohrig of South Dakota.
Memorial visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. for Mrs. Williams on Aug. 24, and funeral services will be held for her at 10 a.m. on Aug. 25 at the South East Lawn Mortuary at 9189 East Stockton Blvd.

Jenny  Washington-Sundberg
Jenny  Washington-Sundberg, a three-year Elk Grove resident, died Aug. 17, 2006 at the age of 29.
She is survived by her daughters Michaelah  Washington and Madison Williams-Sundberg; her parents Alan and Patti Sundberg; her siblings Ailisa Franklin (Robert), Reid Sundberg (Sue), and Shawn Sundberg (Megan); and her grandparents Byron and Barbra Sundberg, and Donna Larsen.
A memorial service was held Aug. 22 for her at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Elk Grove with funeral arrangements made by the Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Dorothy E. Epling
Dorothy E. Epling, a longtime resident of the Sacramento area, died Aug.18, 2006 at the age of 90.
The Stockton native lived in Sacramento County for 61 years and retired as an account clerk for the California State Department of Social Services.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Wallace Epling who died in November 2000.
Mrs. Epling is survived by her children Karen Epling of Sacramento and Hank Epling (Vicki) of Sebastopol; her grandchildren Jason Epling (Stacie) of Galt, Debbie Shrull (Jim) of Los Banos, Sara Hanes (Colby) of Oakley and Jereome Epling of Winters; and her six great-grandchildren and adopted granddaughter Marian Stovall of Sacramento.
She was the aunt of Richard Boddy (Pam) of Sacramento and Kathy Penberthy (Phil) of Stockton.
Private memorial services will be held at a later date by the South East Lawn Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to a favorite charity of the donor’s choice in her memory.
