Esther Voos
Esther B. Voos, who was honored by her family this spring on the occasion of her 100th birthday, died Aug. 15, 2006.
Mrs. Voos was born April 28, 1906 in McClusky, N.D. to Daniel and Barbara Schaeffer. She was one of 10 children, all of whom preceded her in death.
The family came to Elk Grove in 1919 and Mrs. Voos attended Franklin Union Grammar School. She married Enoch (Bud) Schultz in 1928. He died in 1958 and she moved back to Elk Grove with her sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Jim Andrews, owners of the Elk Grove Variety Store. Mrs. Voos spent 20 years in retail sales, and wound up working in the variety store from which she retired.
In 1961 she married Henry Voos and the couple enjoyed traveling and retirement in general until his death in 1990.
Mrs. Voos is survived by her son Boyd Schultz of Fresno; stepchildren Melvin Voos and wife Penny of Montana, Charlotte Yount and husband Lee of Elk Grove and Mary Ellen White and husband Neil of Cameron Park; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside services were Monday at South East Lawn Memorial Park, Elk Grove, and memorial services, also on Monday, were at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Elk Grove. Remembrances may be made to the church at 8701 Elk Grove-Florin Rd., Elk Grove, CA 95624. Arrangements were by South East Lawn Mortuary.
Jake Schneider
Jake L. Schneider, a native and lifelong resident of Sloughhouse, and a leader in the beef industry, died Aug. 21, 2006 at the age of 90.
He was born Feb. 1, 1916, a fourth generation cattleman who ranched in Sacramento and El Dorado counties and the state of Nevada. His grandfather, Henry Schneider, established the Schneider Ranch in Sloughhouse in 1905.
At age 26 Mr. Schneider was chosen by the Swift Meat Packing Co. for a national tour promoting beef. In 1952 he was elected president of the California Cattlemen’s Association, the youngest to serve in that position.
Michigan State College recognized him as one of four in the nation in 1954 during their centennial for his modern ranching practices, and in 1960 he was honored as California Livestock Man of the Year. His picture is now permanently displayed at the San Francisco Cow Palace along with other winners.
Mr. Schneider was also a founding member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the California Beef Council.
He grew up in Sloughhouse, graduating from Elk Grove High School in 1935, where he was a member of the Future Farmers of America.
Mr. Schneider was active in community affairs, serving as a charter trustee of both the Elk Grove Unified School District and Cosumnes River Union School. The latter district was formed from four small schools including the Rhoads and Michigan Bar schools.
He was a founding director of the Sloughhouse Resource Conservation District, the Omochumne Hartnell Water District, and director of the Michigan Bar Fire District when it merged with the Sloughhouse Fire District. He was also a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Latrobe for 75 years.
Mr. Schneider was preceded in death by his wives Virginia Wilson Schneider and Eleanore Case Schneider; special friend Janie Orr; and grandson Justin Lawrence Schneider.
He is survived by sons Jay Schneider and wife Susan and Leland Schneider and wife Kathy all of Sloughhouse; grandsons Jake James and fiancé Jaime, Leland Henry and wife Julie and Jared Thomas and wife Shady; and great-grandchildren Rene, Regina and Rowdy.
Mr. Schneider was the brother of Betty N. Mehrten of Sloughhouse and Dorothy J. Kloss of Elk Grove.
Graveside services were held Aug. 26 at East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to the Livestock Memorial Research Fund, c/o California Cattlemen’s Association, 1221 H St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
Merwin Todd Neiger
Merwin Todd Neiger, a 35-year resident of Wilton, died Aug. 24, 2006 at the age of 74.
Mr. Neiger was chief of concessions for the state Parks and Recreation department, retiring in 1992 after 36 years. Under his leadership, both Hearst Castle in San Simeon and Historic Old Town San Diego were established as California state parks. He also created the downtown area of San Diego as an historic attraction.
He was born in Sacramento Feb. 26, 1932 and grew up there, graduating from Sacramento High School and Sacramento Junior College. He served in the California National Guard from 1949 to 1957.
Mr. Neiger was a member of the Holy Name Society at St. Rose's Catholic Church before joining St. Joseph's Church in Elk Grove. He was also a Boy Scout leader from 1972 to 1976.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen Neiger of Wilton; children Mark, wife Kathy and daughter Marissa of Sacramento, Matt, wife Hilda and son Gregory of Scotts Valley, and Mary Therese Argo and husband John of Sacramento.
Services took place Sept. 4 at St. Rose's Church. Remembrances may be made to Elk Grove Community Food Bank Services, P.O. Box 1447, Elk Grove, CA 95759.

Milton Dick
Milton Dick, music teacher and bandleader at Elk Grove High School for 30 years, died Aug. 23, 2006 at the age of 81.
He was known as the icon of the Elk Grove High School music department, beginning his teaching career at the old high school in 1949 and continuing until his retirement in 1979. Many former students fondly recall their band instructor.
When he wasn't teaching, he organized and led the Milton Dick Orchestra, a 10-piece dance band in which he was featured as a trumpet player and singer. His band entertained thousands throughout the greater Sacramento area recreating the sounds of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. Throughout his teaching career and long after his retirement, he continued to lead and perform his dance band favorites.
He also performed and taught clown skills as a member of Klown Alley and performed with the Pinebrook Players Theater Group in Folsom as well as producing some original musicals.
Mr. Dick was a life member of the Sacramento Association of Musicians, earning his Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts degrees and Subject Supervisor Credential in music from California State University, Sacramento and University of the Pacific.
He was born Oct. 18, 1924 in Fallon, Nev. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy as Bugle Master Second Class aboard the USS Langley and USS Norton Sound, seeing combat in the South Pacific islands from 1942-1946.
Mr. Dick was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Lorene, on Oct. 14, 1999.
He is survived by his second wife of three years, Arlene of Folsom; daughters Bonnie Eisner and husband David of Rocklin and Kathleen Maurer and husband Scott of Florence, Ore.; grandchildren Brandy Eisner, Chad Eisner, Kyle Maurer, Heather Williams and husband Scott; and great-granddaughters Melanie and Paige Williams.
He was the brother of Randy Dick and wife Shirley of Dayton, Nev.
A celebration of his life will take place Saturday, Sept. 16 at 2 p.m. in the clubhouse at the Pinebrook Village Mobilehome Park, 7900 Auburn-Folsom Road in Folsom. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, CA 95815.

Thomas Stewart
Memorial services will be held this morning (Friday) for Thomas D. Stewart who died Sept. 1, 2006 at the age of 62.
Mr. Stewart was a lifetime resident of Sacramento.
He was preceded in death by his brother George Stewart.
Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of 18 years, Linda Stewart; children Chad, Arron, Tim and Hillary; and grandchildren Zachary, Mia, Zoey, Adrianna and Andrew.
He was the son of Viley and brother of Margaret, Marlene, Ruby, Roger and Jim.
Today's services begin at 11 a.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment is private.

Robert Gibson
Memorial services will take place Tuesday, Sept. 12 for Robert Jett Gibson who died Aug. 27, 2006 while riding his Harley.
Mr. Gibson, 49, was a resident of Sacramento for 41 years. His family said he will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and love of practical jokes and his pets.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Edna Walker.
Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife Jeannie, son Robert Jr., daughter Emily, and brothers Bill and Dave Gibson.
Tuesday's services will begin at 2:30 p.m. in South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
Fern Appleton
Memorial services will take place Tuesday, Sept. 12 for Fern Virginia Appleton who died Aug. 28, 2006 at the age of 91.
Mrs. Appleton was born Nov. 30, 1914 in Sacramento to Leonard and Mabel Plummer. She lived most of her life here and in Loomis, graduating from Sacramento High School in 1931. She retired from the state as a legislative secretary.
Mrs. Appleton was a 50-year member and Past Matron of El Camino Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and a former Deputy Grand Matron, member of the Menzaleh Temple's Daughters of the Nile, Tuesday Club of Sacramento, FLAIRS (Former Legislative Aides in Retirement) and the Ding-A-Lings.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ellis Appleton and her sister Myrtice.
Mrs. Appleton is survived by her son Eliot Appleton and wife Ginger of Galt, and niece Fern Lorraine Hamilton Redman of Salem, Ore.
Tuesday's services begin at 1 p.m. at the George Primrose Masonic Center, 3010 Becerra Way, Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.
