Robert Haberern
Graveside services will take place Saturday, Sept. 23 for Robert W. Haberern who died Sept. 15, 2006 in Rancho Murieta at the age of 61.
Mr. Haberern was born in Stamford, Conn. to John and Marguerite Haberern. He served in the U.S. Army and was a computer consultant for 30 years until ill health forced his retirement. His interests included golf, ham radios and computers.
Mr. Haberern is survived by his wife of 21 years, Teresa Haberern. He was the father of Kade Haberern and brother of Michael Haberern of southern California, Elizabeth Haberern of Connecticut and John Haberern and wife Denise of South Carolina. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation is Friday, Sept. 22 from noon to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 23 from 9 to 10:45 a.m. in South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Graveside services will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday in South East Lawn Memorial Park.
Jack Costa
Jack Howells Costa, a longtime resident of Wilton, died Sept. 13, 2006 at the age of 71.
Mr. Costa was born in Colorado Springs, Colo. and had lived in Wilton for the past 50 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, the Masonic Lodge and the S.E.S.
He is survived by his wife Mary Costa of Wilton; and daughter Jeri Barnes, husband Randy and daughter Kaci all of Herald.
Mr. Costa was the uncle of Dawn Costella, Tony Costella and Curtis and Kyle Costella all of Galt.
Services were held Monday in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel. Inurnment was private.
Emilia Correia
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated today (Friday) for Emilia Agusta Luis Correia of Elk Grove who died Sept. 16, 2006 at the age of 91.
Mrs. Correia was born in Raminho, Terceira, Acores, and became a citizen of the United States at age 82. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Society.
She was preceded in death by her brother Manuel N. Luis.
Mrs. Correira is survived by her husband of 62 years Jose Goncalves Correia; children Jose Manuel Correia and wife Manuela, David L. Correia and wife Fatima, and Manuel Luis Correia and wife Rosemary; and grandchildren Michael and Sandra Correia, Melissa Correia, Lisa Mello, David Correia, Cindy Robertson and their families.
She also leaves behind great-grandchildren Dylan A. and Luca A. Mello, Nathaniel and Elizabeth Correia and Caleb Young, and Marianinha Menezes and two brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law.
Today’s Mass will begin at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road, followed by interment in South East Lawn Memorial Park, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
Arrangements are by South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove.
Carol Meador
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 25 for Carol Lorraine Meador, a longtime resident of Elk Grove and an “incredible volunteer” for Project R.I.D.E. Mrs. Meador, 59, died suddenly at home Sept. 18, 2006.
She and her husband Larry first became involved with R.I.D.E. in the 1970s because of their daughter Cheryl, one of the first regular participants in the therapeutic horseback riding program for special needs children and adults. She chaired the spaghetti feed which has been an annual fundraiser for 22 years, personally soliciting businesses for donations for the event and working with volunteers decorating and running the dinners.
Although not a horse person according to R.I.D.E staff, she soon began working in the arena as a side-walker then as a leader, then later hauling horses in the trailer from the ranch to the arena. When the horses were moved from Wilton to Herald, the new facility had to be readied and Mrs. Meador arranged for the Elk Grove Lions Club to tackle the project.
In the 1980s she became involved with the R.I.D.E board, serving as president, vice president and even secretary for a year. She made many presentations promoting Project R.I.D.E. to various organizations and set up information booths at many events, arranging for volunteers to man the booths, and raising funds for the organization.
“Carol has been involved in all facets of the (R.I.D.E.) program,” said staff members who were still trying to realize that one of their leading volunteers was gone.
Daughter Jennifer called her mother a professional volunteer, citing the years she spent with Sheldon 4-H Club, first as cooking leader and then as club leader. Baking, canning, cooking, arts and crafts were a big part of her life and she was known to feed her volunteers on many occasions. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.
Mrs. Meador was born March 25, 1947 in Stockton and grew up in various towns throughout the state as her father, Walter J. “Tiny” Harris was a correctional officer for the state. He preceded her in death.
Carol and Larry Meador were married 37 years ago and moved to Elk Grove shortly after the wedding, in 1970. He survives her as do her daughters Cheryl Lynn and Jennifer Ann Meador all of Elk Grove; mother Imogene Harris and sister Linda Miller both of Woodland; and nephews James Gerald Loesch of Benicia and Jeffery Charles Loesch of Woodland.
Pastor Neal Harrell of Point Pleasant United Methodist Church will officiate at Monday’s services which begin at 10 a.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove, followed by interment in South East Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation hours are Saturday, Sept. 23 from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Following Monday’s services a reception for Mrs. Meador will take place at the R.I.D.E. Arena, 8840 Southside Ave. behind Jessie Baker School. Remembrances may be made to Project R.I.D.E., P.O. Box 159, Elk Grove, CA 95759.
Reno Dawson, 73, renowned Elk Grove educator
Reno Carol Dawson, teacher, librarian, scholarship chair for the Elk Grove Community Foundation and longtime resident of Elk Grove, died Jan. 16, 2007 at the age of 73 following a battle with lung cancer.
Reno Carol Eddy was born Aug. 20, 1933 in Fairmont, W.Va. She was named for Major Reno of Custer’s “Little Big Horn” fame, and her name was so unique that it became a source of pride for her.
She graduated from Fairmont State at age 20 and, with her husband, Chester Norman (Chet) Dawson, began teaching in 1954 in Galion, Ohio. They were there for seven years until Dr. Will Schreck from the Elk Grove Unified School District came east to recruit teachers.
The Dawsons came to Elk Grove in 1961 to become the first husband-wife teaching team in the district, starting out at Pleasant Grove Elementary School.
From there Reno went to James Rutter Middle School where she opened the library, becoming the school’s first librarian and getting it completely organized and up and running.
She was the librarian for Joseph Kerr Middle School twice, when it opened in 1965 and again from 1984 to her retirement in 1996. In between, she taught primary grades and was also a resource specialist for the district.
She taught students about the library, and she would travel the world on her breaks. Upon returning from each trip, she would conduct a presentation about the country she visited while dressed in full period and cultural attire. Her travels took her to England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Italy, Egypt, China, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico and 49 of the 50 states.
“In each school, her libraries were considered a jewel of the facility,” her son Norman said.
The Elk Grove Unified School District apparently agreed, as she received several awards during her teaching career. These included two awards from the Elk Grove school board, one for her teaching in 1984 and one for outstanding contributions (library) in 1986.
Kerr School faculty honored her in 1986 with its Most Amazing Teacher Recognition, and again in 1988 with its Robert Morgan award for exceptional concern for people. Also, in 1986 she was Kerr’s Teacher of the Year.
“I think of all the accomplishments my mother was most proud of, it’s her 41 years as a teacher,” Norman Dawson said.
A decade-long member of the board of Sacramento Literature Symposium, Mrs. Dawson brought famous children’s authors to the area to speak, and read their books to students.
Following “retirement,” she became involved with the Elk Grove Community Foundation, chairing its scholarship committee and raising millions of dollars in scholarship money for EGUSD graduates. For her efforts, she received the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award in 2000, the Rotary Club of Elk Grove award for community service in 2002, and the Woman of the Year award from the Elk Grove Citizen in 2003.
When she retired from the Foundation, it took three people and their committees to handle her job.
She was also a member of the Sacramento Renaissance Society at California State University, Sacramento, an organization dedicated to the continued education for retired members of the community.
Most recently she became “neighborhood grandma to a dozen children on her Elk Grove street, who named her their Best Grandma. They were joined by her daughter-in-law who called her the Best Mother-in-Law ever.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Chet Dawson in 1986.
Mrs. Dawson is survived by her son Norman, daughter-in-law Pam and granddaughter Skye all of Elk Grove; sister Jeanne Westin of Sacramento and brother Richard Eddy of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Memorial services will take place Saturday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m. in the Elk Grove High School Theatre, 9800 Elk Grove-Florin Road.
Remembrances may be made to the scholarship established in her name at the Elk Grove Community Foundation, P.O. Box 2021, Elk Grove, CA 95759.
Colleen Denny
Colleen Miles Denny, a longtime Elk Grove resident, died March 29, 2007 in her home in Sparks, Nev.
Mrs. Denny was born Dec. 11, 1937 in Oakland to Collis and Ruth Miles. She was a graduate of Elk Grove High School.
Mrs. Denny is survived by her husband, Ray Denny of Sparks; children Darilyn Cole, Leslie Denny, Michael Miller, Zane and Duane Denny; and grandchildren Crystalyn Denny, Eric Miles Ernst and Avery Orvis.
She was the sister of Patricia Miles Plescia and husband George.
Services were held April 2 with interment in Mountain View Cemetery
in Reno.
An open house reception will take place Saturday, April 7 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the home of her daughter, Darilyn Cole, at 9031 Plaza Park Drive, Elk Grove, phone 686-7881. Remembrances may be made to the American Heart Association or Circle of Life Hospice.
Francisco Amaral
Francisco (Frank) Amaral, former dairyman in the Elk Grove area, died March 31, 2007 at the age of 84.
Mr. Amaral was born in Terceira, Azores Islands, and had lived in Elk Grove for the past 38 years. He was a dairyman for 18 years before retiring 20 years ago.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Maria Amaral of Elk Grove; and children Frank Amaral and wife Rosa of Acampo, Conceicao Costa and husband Alvaro of Azores Islands, Jose-Isidro Amaral and wife Henrietta of San Leandro, Elias Amaral and wife Sandy and Maria Thompson and husband Jeff of Sacramento, and Delio Amaral and wife Fatima of Galt.
Mr. Amaral was the grandfather of George and Nancy, Paul, Michelle and Jennifer, Nicholas and Natalie, Diana, Daniel and Cody; great-grandfather of Nathan; and brother of Evelyn Ventura of San Diego.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Wednesday followed by interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Arrangements were by South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove.
