Jay Melton
Funeral services will take place Monday, June 18 for Jay M. Melton, retired supervisor of the Delta Patrol of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. Sgt. Melton, 77, died Saturday, June 9 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
He grew up in Arkansas and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He joined the Sheriff’s department in January 1965, attaining the rank of corporal in March 1971 and sergeant in September 1976.
Sgt. Melton worked custody at Rio Cosumnes Correctional Center and the Sacramento Main Jail, but considered some of his best years to be those he served with the Delta Patrol.
He was field supervisor of the more than 20-man unit having primary law enforcement responsibility for the unincorporated county area, covering more than 400 square miles from the Jackson Highway to Hood and south to Lodi and Antioch. Under his supervision the Delta enjoyed the lowest crime rate per capita of any patrol beat in the county.
Sgt. Melton retired from the Sheriff’s department in 1987 with more than 25 years of service.
The family lived in Wilton, and Sgt. Melton was very active in the Wilton Bible Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jane of Wilton; son Rick; daughter Gail; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 17 from noon to 5 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Monday’s services begin at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Elk Grove, 8939 East Stockton Blvd. Interment will follow in East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park, 9189 East Stockton Blvd.
Jane Nading
Jane Anne Nading, a 20-year resident of the Sacramento/Elk Grove area, died May 30, 2007 at the age of 58.
Mrs. Nading was born in Yuba City to Charles and Jane Calvert and lived in the Riverside area for several years before moving to this area. She graduated from Ramona High School in 1966.
She is survived by her husband Dennis Nading of Elk Grove; son Dennis Nading Jr. of Burbank; daughter Denise Wolford and husband Chris of Shingle Springs; and grandchildren Kelsea, Natalie and Savannah.
A memorial Mass of Christian burial was celebrated June 4 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Arrangements were by East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary.
Joseph Deaver
Funeral services will take place Friday for Joseph L. Deaver of Elk Grove who died July 5, 2002, following a long illness. Mr. Deaver was 59.
He was born Sept. 22, 1942 in Chester, Pa., and grew up in that state, graduating from Eddystone High School.
Following graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force which brought him to California. While stationed at Mather Air Force Base, he met and married Julie Warren and became a part of the Elk Grove community.
Mr. Deaver was always active in sports and was involved in the local Pop Warner organization for 10 years. He also coached both a Babe Ruth team and a girls’ softball team. And although a great fan of California teams, he remained loyal to the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, said his family.
The Deavers owned and operated a gift shop, Julie Anne’s, during the 1980s, and during that time were members of the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce. Other activities included being a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer with the Elk Grove Fire Department.
He was an accountant and controller by profession.
“Joe, always young at heart, always supported his daughters’ activities,” said his wife. “Family was always first priority with Joe.”
Mr. Deaver was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Deaver.
Besides his wife of 39 years, Mr. Deaver is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Giron and husband Phil of Sacramento, and Jana Giron and husband Anthony of Jackson; his mother, Dorothy Deaver of Eddystone, Pa.; his grandson, Joshua of Jackson; his sister, Alberta of Virginia; and his brothers, Robert and Wayne of Pennsylvania.
He was the son-in-law of Henry Warren and brother-in-law of Sue Roberts and Nancy Angell, all of Elk Grove; and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd. in Elk Grove. Pastor Derrel Kelso of the Lords Church in Courtland will officiate at the services Friday which begin at 10 a.m. at South East Lawn.
Remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Manuel Jardin
Manuel A. Jardin, a 12-year resident of Elk Grove, died Dec. 14, 2002, at the age of 80.
Mr. Jardin worked for the government in civil service and the Merchant Marines for 45 years. His job took him all over the country and the world, including Korea, Japan and France.
“He was well-liked in our neighborhood,” said his wife, Ruth. “And when he went to the hospital, our schnauzer, Golly Gee Whiz, sat by the door waiting for him to come home.”
Mr. Jardin was born in New Bedford, Mass., one of 13 children, several of whom survive him.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth Jardin; his children, Arlyce Tenbroeck and husband Dale of Elk Grove, Patricia Howard and husband Bobby of Oroville, Henry “Hank” Kinney of Sacramento, Jack Jardin of Elk Grove, Maria Jardin of Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Ricardo “Rick” Jardin of Reno; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
No services were held at his request. Arrangements were by South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove.
Bill Chord
Bill Chord, a 35-year resident of Elk Grove, died Dec. 16, 2002, at the age of 71.
Mr. Chord was a ranger with the U.S. Army and following retirement, was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Elk Grove for approximately 15 years.
His hobby was archery and he made many etched arrows. He also belonged to the World Atlatl Association, the ancient art of spear throwing, and he taught this skill to his grandchildren, “who all adored him,” said his wife, Pat.
Mr. Chord was a native of St. Helena.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pat; his children: Chris Chord and wife Lauralyne, Brian Chord and wife Lisa, and Randy Chord and wife Cheri; his grandchildren, Justin, Carrilyne, Brady, Chelsea, Rylan, Aubree, Jessica, Kimberly, Taylor, Morgen and Josh; and one great-grandchild, Indiana.
Mr. Chord was the son of Bernice Simmons and the brother of Kenneth and Harold Chord, all of Gualala.
A Mass of Christian burial took place Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Elk Grove, followed by interment in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
T.J. McNulty
T.J. McNulty, a resident of Rio Rancho, N.M., for the past seven years, died Feb. 8, 2003, at the age of 20.
Mr. McNulty is survived by his mother, Misty McMullen and husband David Hermida of Rio Rancho; his father, Thomas John McNulty and wife Mary of Elk Grove; his sisters, Casey Gill and husband Nathan of Rio Rancho, Breanna McNulty of Elk Grove and Heather Travao and husband Sonny of Modesto; his maternal grandmother, Casey Straight of Aurora, Colo., and his paternal grandmother, Patricia Partridge of Sacramento.
He was the uncle of Nate and Jeffery Gill and Morgan and Hollee Travao, and nephew of Wendy, Stormy, Scotty, Corey, Kelly, Randy, Jerry, Mike and Ron.
Mr. McNulty was preceded in death by his grandfather, Lynn Daniel Straight.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at French Mortuary – Westside Chapel in Albuquerque followed by interment in Vista Verde Cemetery
in Rio Rancho.
Maxine Ware
Maxine Louelle (Caudle) Ware, a resident of the Elk Grove/Sacramento area for over 40 years, died Feb. 5, 2003, three days before her 76th birthday. She was born Feb. 8, 1927.
Mrs. Ware was a retired engineer from Lockheed Corp. and a charter member of VFW Post 67.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaithel O. Ware Jr., missionary and First Baptist minister.
She is survived by her children, Judith Lewe, Gaithel Ware III, Patty Davis and Diane Allensworth; grandchildren, Stacey Romo, Richard Ware, Karrie Ware, Ben Gomez III, Brandon Gomez, Julia Fuller, Brittany Davis, Melissa Allensworth, Jessica Allensworth and Logan Allensworth; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Ware was the sister of Norman, Bill and Roger Martin; and the mother-in-law of Al, Roger, Gary and Leslie.
She is also survived by her special companion, Bob Caudle.
Funeral services took place Wednesday at Sacramento Memorial Lawn. Remembrances may be made to the Sacramento Police Chaplaincy.
Irma Downie
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 17 for Irma Johnson Downie, a 48-year resident of Elk Grove, who died April 25, 2003.
Mrs. Downie was well-known as the office manager/secretary at Elk Grove Insurance Company, where she worked for many years. She was a member of Southside Community Church.
She was born Aug. 3, 1917 in Pueblo, Colo.
Mrs. Downie is survived by her husband Baldwin Downie of Elk Grove; children Alycia Decker and husband Warren of Reno, Carol Edon and husband Clyde of Wilton, Russell Downie of Elk Grove, Shelley Brubaker of Sacramento and Tom Downie of Mt. Shasta; grandchildren Julie Schon, Buddy Fitzgerald, Chele Matsumoto, Tracy Downie, Keith Downie, Stephanie Brubaker, Matt Brubaker, Josh Facht, Amanda Downie and Caroline Downie; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of George Johnson of Riverside, Earl Johnson of Goleta and Nell Wilshems of South Dakota.
Saturday's service will begin at 1 p.m. at Southside Community Church, corner of Elk Grove-Florin and Gerber roads. Remembrances may be made to the church at 8890 Gerber Road, Sacramento, CA 95828.
