Theresa Van Santen
Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 17 for Theresa Van Santen, a resident of Elk Grove for close to 65 years, who died Sept. 10, 2004 at the age of 88.
In addition to raising her own children, Mrs. Van Santen was a foster mother and later took on the job of elder care for those in need.
"She was a very giving person," said her daughter, Lena Van Santen. "She liked being busy and was a good cook and baker."
Mrs. Van Santen was born in Germany on Nov. 19, 1915. She came to California, to the Thornton area, when she was 19, and married Esden Van Santen a year later on April 5, 1935. The family lived in Thornton before moving to Elk Grove.
Her husband preceded her in death as did a son, Edward.
Mrs. Van Santen is survived by her children, August Van Santen of Sacramento, John Van Santen of Lodi and Lena Van Santen of Elk Grove; her grandchildren, Steven Van Santen, Tonya Van Santen, Trista Boucher and Tasha Van Santen; and great-grandchildren, Cybil Bryant and Taryn Teresa Boucher.
Friday's services will begin at 2 p.m. at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Interment will be in Point Pleasant Cemetery.
Arrangements are by East Lawn Andrews and Greilich.

Barbara Cross
Barbara K. Cross, a 30-year resident of Elk Grove, died Nov. 10, 2004 at home following a long illness. She was 73.
Mrs. Cross was born June 25, 1931 to Charles Bailey and Kathryn Tyrrel Bailey in Los Angeles. She was a third-generation Californian: her great-grandfather, Jeremiah Tyrrel was Sheriff of Alameda County.
The new Californian didn't stay in the state very long, but as an infant moved with her family to Idaho where she grew up in the Bailey family home, the 2 Bar Ranch in Owyhee County.
Another great-grandfather, Josiah McClain was the Presbyterian bishop of Salt Lake City and a founder of Westminster College there.
Barbara Bailey came back to California and married Douglas Cross on Oct. 19, 1951 at the Bethel Temple, Sacramento. Officiating was her uncle, Rev. Horace Tyrrel who pastored the Wilton Bible Church for many years.
Mrs. Cross was a retired civil judgment clerk with the Department of Motor Vehicles in Sacramento. She was a member of the Capital Christian Center choir for close to 30 years, and sang in that church's annual Singing Christmas Tree presentation for 20-plus years.
"Barbara never complained about her illness," said her husband. "She always had a smile on her face and a positive outlook on life."
Besides her husband Doug of the family home in Elk Grove, Mrs. Cross is survived by her daughters, Julie Lucca and husband Domenick and Michelle Haakenson and husband Ken all of Sacramento; her mother Kathryn Bailey also of Sacramento; and her grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Katie, Jacob, Emily and Benjamin.
She was the sister of Irene Sullivan and husband Malcolm of San Rafael.
Funeral services were held Monday at Capital Christian Center. Pallbearers included Bill Florence, George Keskeys, Joe Neuburger, Kelly Scott, Bruce Seigalkoff and Harry Stroble. Mickey Henson and Otto Ragains were honorary pallbearers.
Remembrances may be made to Teen Challenge, c/o Capital Christian Center, 9470 Micron Ave., Sacramento, CA 95827.
Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Judy Luna
Funeral services are taking place this morning (Friday) for Judy Ellen Luna who died July 29, 2006 following a battle with cancer. She was 53.
Mrs. Luna was born Sept. 3, 1953 in Sacramento where she grew up, graduating from Kennedy High School. She was a longtime employee of the Elk Grove Unified School District, serving as secretary to the principal at Elk Grove High School and then at Sheldon High School where she was working at the time of her death.
“She always put other people before herself and has forever made an impact on all those who knew her,” said her family.
Mrs. Luna was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Goulding and Frances Solis; and her brother Floyd Goulding Jr.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, John Luna of Elk Grove; children Juan Jr. and wife Dora of Sacramento, Jason and wife Nicole, JJ and wife Tara and Trina Luna all of Elk Grove; and grandchildren Juan Emanuel, Juan III and Kiki.
Mrs. Luna was the sister of Bruce Goulding Sr. of Sacramento, and Monte and Aliso; and the daughter-in-law of Hope Luna of Wilton. She also leaves several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces and cousins.
Today’s services begin at 10 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Gardner Avenue at Florin Road. Interment follows at Sacramento Memorial Lawn on Stockton Boulevard in Sacramento.
The family extends its appreciation to all who attended a spaghetti feed Saturday and contributed donations for Mrs. Luna.

Derick Semone
A chapel service will be held this morning (Friday) for Derick Ryan Semone of Sacramento who died suddenly July 29, 2006 in El Dorado Hills at the age of 23.
Mr. Semone was born June 10, 1983 in Modesto. He worked as a clerk for the Sacramento Superior Court and had previously worked at Giovanni’s Pizza Parlor in Sacramento.
He was an avid sports fan who participated in Ceres Little League baseball, Pop Warner football and basketball. He loved fishing, and building and networking computers.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Joe and Theresa Semone, Manuel Luke and Glenace Meyer.
Mr. Semone is survived by his parents, Daniel Semone of Modesto and Marchelle Meyer and husband Chad of Sacramento; fiancé Linda Rith of Sacramento; sisters Kristin Semone of Elk Grove and Dana Hees of Nanaimo, B.C.; brothers Jason Semone of Modesto and Scott Meyer of Elk Grove; and grandparents Judy Luke of Hughson and Bruce Meyer of Lodi.
Today’s service begins at 10 a.m. at Lodi Funeral Home followed by interment at Cherokee Memorial Park.
Remembrances may be made to Sutter Children’s Hospital, 2801 Capitol Ave., Suite 400, Sacramento, CA 95816.

JoAnn Polansky
JoAnn Polansky, a former longtime resident of Elk Grove, died July 8, 2006 at the age of 69.
Mrs. Polansky was born and raised in southeastern Idaho and eventually settled with her family in Elk Grove in 1975. She was an active member of the Elk Grove First Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for almost 20 years until she moved with husband Mike to St. Louis.
She worked for several years as a merchandiser for Hallmark Cards and American Greetings.
Mrs. Polansky was preceded in death by her granddaughter.
She is survived by her husband Mike; children Michelle Polansky, Michael Polansky and Jennifer Polansky Tucker; and two granddaughters and two grandsons.
Services were held July 11 in St. Louis.

Albert Stoecker
Memorial services will take place Saturday, Aug. 5 for Albert Leo (Al) Stoecker who died July 26, 2006 in Herald at the home of his cousin-in-law, Judy Stoecker. Mr. Stoecker, 87, had resided there for the past three months under hospice care.
He was born in Oakley, Kan. on Sept. 13, 1918 to Godfrey and Lydia Stoecker, and grew up in Elk Grove, graduating from school here. He served in the armed forces, traveling to several foreign countries with his unit.
Mr. Stoecker lived in several states with  Texas as his home base while pursuing a career as a salesman.
In the mid-‘80s he moved back to Elk Grove to be near his father. He volunteered as a driver for the Senior Center of Elk Grove, worked at Ace Hardware in Elk Park Village shopping center, and at Valley Hi Country Club.
“He never met a stranger, and you never heard him say a bad word about anyone,” said Judy Stoecker.
Mr. Stoecker was preceded in death by his wife Peggie, brother Richard William and companion Stella Lindsey.
He is survived by Stella Lindsey’s daughters and family; sister-in-law June Stoecker; nephew Gary Stoecker; niece Kathy Jones; Uncle Fred Stoecker in Kansas: and numerous cousins in Kansas, Jack Stoecker of Sacramento and Rita Lucas of  Washington.
Saturday’s services will begin at 10 a.m. at Sacramento Memorial Lawn, 6100 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento.

Rosie Sugimoto
Funeral services will take place Sunday, Oct. 1 for Rosie S. Sugimoto, a former resident of Elk Grove who died in Sacramento Sept. 20, 2006. Mrs. Sugimoto, 79, was a native of Stockton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Sugimoto in 1996.
Mrs. Sugimoto is survived by 12 children, 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two sisters.
Visitation is Saturday, Sept. 30 from noon to 5 p.m. in South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Sunday’s services, which begin at 2 p.m., are in South East Lawn Chapel. Cremation is private.
