Elsie King
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 14 for Elsie May King, a lifelong resident of Elk Grove who died April 7, 2007 at the age of 87 following a battle with cancer. She was the daughter of Elzie and Amy Latta of Elk Grove.
Mrs. King worked for the state of California Military department for 30 years, and was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America for many years. She loved music and dancing and was well known for playing the piano and guitar.
She and her husband enjoyed fishing and camping, and fished many northern California lakes and reservoirs. She often said the highlight of her fishing career was catching a 40-pound salmon on the Sacramento River at Isleton.
In her later years, Mrs. King and her sister enjoyed traveling, dining out and playing the slot machines.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Alvin (Pud) King.
Mrs. King is survived by her son Larry Saner and wife Barbara; grandchildren Sonia Mauldin, Stacey Anderson and husband Jeff, and Larry J.; and great-grandchildren Tegan, Jared and Chance Mauldin and Lauren and Melanie Anderson.
She was the sister of Marie Patterson, and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Saturday’s services begin at 2 p.m. in the chapel of South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Cremation is private, with inurnment in South East Lawn Cemetery
next to her husband.

Ryan Slothower
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 27 for Ryan Slothower of Elk Grove who died June 14, 2007 at the age of 27.
“Ryan’s life would seem too short to many, but those who were touched by him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives,” his father said. “Although Ryan’s size made him appear frail, he possessed strength, perseverance, and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges.”
Ryan is survived by his parents Scott and Laure Slothower; sister Kara Gudel and husband Jon; brother Tyler Slothower all of Elk Grove; grandmother Mary Ellen Johnson of LaPorte, Ind.; aunt and uncle Lisa and Mark Stormberg of Denver; aunt and uncle Sara and David Wall of Milwaukie, Ore.; and cousins Jeff, Jenny and Randy of Oregon.
He also leaves behind caregivers Contessa Edwards and Brian Volpi and special friends at Jessie Baker School, Devereux and South Side Art Center.
Wednesday’s services begin at 1 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1209 L Street, Sacramento.
Manuel Apolinar
Funeral services will take place today (Friday) for Manuel R. Apolinar who died June 15, 2007 in Sacramento at the age of 69.
He was born May 22, 1938 in San Antonio, Texas and was a retired car man from Union Pacific Railroad where he had worked for 26 years, in Sacramento and Colton. His family said he loved his work, trains and music.
Mr. Apolinar is survived by his wife of 49 years Margaret D. Apolinar; children Edy, Victor, Anthony and Sallie and their spouses; eight grandchildren and their spouses; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, brothers, nephews and nieces.
Today’s services begin at 10 a.m. at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd.
Dr. Russell Miller Jr.
Russell Miller Jr., M.D. died June 18, 2007 in Elk Grove at the age of 80.
Dr. Miller was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Ph.D. from Jefferson Medical School and medical degree from Yale University and was a practicing physician in the East Bay for more than 30 years. He also served as an Associate Clinical Professor at U.C. Davis School of Medicine, and served his country as a member of both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
Dr. Miller was married to Ruth Williams in December 1951. She survives him as do his children, Dr. Paul Miller of Fair Oaks, Karen Kiley of Antioch, Scott Miller of Crescent City and Dr. Tom Miller of Rancho Cucamonga; 11 grandchildren, one step-grandson, one step-great-granddaughter; a niece, nephew and two grand-nieces.
He was the brother of Harriet Zive of New Jersey.
There will be no services at his request. Remembrances may be made to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, 1399 South Roxbury Dr., Los Angeles, CA 90035-4792.

Donald Seale
Funeral services will take place Thursday, July 12 for Donald Richard Seale, a longtime resident of the Elk Grove area who died June 23, 2007 following a battle with cancer.
Mr. Seale was born Dec. 13, 1934 in Red Bluff to Richard and Eunice Seale, and grew up in Sacramento. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1953 and served on the USS Wasp and Yorktown, traveling the world by sea.
Mr. Seale was a welder by trade and a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union No. 447 for more than 38 years. He was also a member of the South Sacramento Moose Lodge and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1267. Hobbies included hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends.
In August 1959 he married Rosann. She survives him as do his daughter Staci Bettis and husband Jimmy; grandsons David and Dylan all of Elk Grove; and sister Donna Green.
Thursday’s services begin at 11 a.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. A reception will follow at the South Sacramento Moose Lodge.
Interment will be July 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Cottonwood Cemetery
in Cottonwood.

Larry Kneppel
Funeral services are today, July 6 for Larry Kneppel, a longtime resident of south Sacramento who died July 1, 2007 at the age of 48.
Mr. Kneppel is survived by his wife of 21 years, Amy; sons Larry, John and Vincent; mother Jane; and grandchildren Janessa, Amadeu, Maudesol, Jessie, Betty, Lorena, Elena and Michael.
He was the brother of Keith and Spencer, and father-in-law of Martha and Kim.
He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation is today from noon to 7 p.m. The services begin at 3 p.m. at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
Cremation is private.
Edna Mae Dandois
Edna Mae Dandois, longtime bookkeeper for Herburger Publications, died May 3, 2002, after a valiant battle with cancer. She was 77.
A celebration of her life will take place May 18 at 3 p.m. at Elk Grove United Methodist Church, 8986 Elk Grove Blvd., followed by a light meal.
Elk Grove Citizen subscribers who have been in the city for more than two years would recognize Edna Mae Dandois as the voice at the other end of the line when they phoned in to the office. They also saw her cheerful face when they came through the front door.
“Edna Mae and I worked side by side for over 10 years,” said publisher David Herburger. “She taught me the tricks of the trade, exemplified hard work, friendship, loyalty and grace under pressure. There is no way I can imagine making it through the tough times without her. She just wouldn’t give up and I drew strength from that.”
Mrs. Dandois was born in Wilkinsburg, Pa. Feb. 21, 1925, to Frank and Esther Wyland. She grew up in that state.
In early 1943, during World War II, the 18-year-old traveled across the country to Bellingham, Wash. to marry her high school sweetheart, John Dandois, who was in the Coast Guard. The couple had no time for a honeymoon, but were able to celebrate 50 years later when they renewed their vows Jan. 26, 1993, on a cruise to Mexico on the ‘Viking Serenade.’
They lived in Washington until 1945, when John was sent to the South Pacific. Edna Mae and their infant daughter, Cheryl, moved to Fresno to be with her parents.
Following the war, the family returned to Pennsylvania but in 1948 came back to Fresno, where John worked as a salesman and Edna Mae as a bookkeeper.
The couple moved to Elk Grove in 1970, and in 1979 Mrs. Dandois went to work for Herburger Publications, first at the Elk Grove Citizen and later at The Galt Herald. After “retirement” she came back to the Citizen as a receptionist one day a week. “I’m their ‘Girl Friday,’” she said.
“She was always so great about remembering birthdays, and making you feel as if you were the special person in her life,” said co-worker Nan Mahon.
Mrs. Dandois stayed at her position until December 2001, amazing her co-workers with her stamina in the face of her illness.
She had an adventurous spirit, going parasailing at the age of 70.
“She loved life and didn’t want to leave,” said her daughter, “but God won. Her family meant everything to her.”
Mrs. Dandois was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her brother, Frank Wyland.
She is survived by her children, Cheryl Johnson and husband John of Elk Grove, and John Dandois and wife Louise of Modesto; and her grandchildren, Debbie Craddock and husband Nate of Elk Grove, Jeff Johnson and wife Rhonda of Buckley, Wash., and Jake, Angie, Gina and Frankie Maselli of Fresno.
Mrs. Dandois is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Nate and Justin Craddock and Brandon, Kayla, Trevor and Zack Johnson; her sister, Esther Riddle and husband Von of Elk Grove; her sister-in-law, Cheryl Wyland of southern California; and numerous nieces and nephews.
