Paul Anzelone
Paul Robert Anzelone, who recently retired from the Safeway store in the Laguna Creek area of Elk Grove, died July 16, 2006 at the age of 59.
Mr. Anzelone was born Jan. 20, 1947 in San Francisco where he grew up, graduating from Polytechnic High School there in 1965. He joined the U.S. Navy in October of that year and served until August 1969.
He continued his education at San Francisco City College, later at Skyline Jr. College while working for G.S.A. San Francisco as a mail clerk and then supply clerk.
Mr. Anzelone then went to work for Safeway Stores in October 1971, working his way up to store manager in San Francisco until transferring to Safeway in Lodi as head night crew manager in 1988. He went on to work in Stockton and finally at Safeway in Elk Grove when it was opened. He retired from Safeway after 35 years in January 2006.
Mr. Anzelone was a member of the Galt Historical Society and the Stockton Horseshoe Club, which was his passion. He enjoyed attending 49’er games and rooting for his favorite team, the Chicago Bears. A favorite competition was Supercouples held in Pacifica by friends, the Della Santinas, in which he and his wife hold the overall total points.
He was preceded in death by his mother Rubie Chase and father-in-law Emil Stigelmayer.
Mr. Anzelone is survived by his wife of 34 years, Donna Anzelone of Galt; sons Marcus and Brian; daughter-in-law Tara; grandsons Bryce and Tate; cousins Paulette and Richard Roberts of San Leandro; daughter Nicole; son Alexander and partner Janine of Castro Valley; mother-in-law Florence Stigelmayer; sister-in-law Nancy; and brothers-in-law Steve and Jim Stigelmayer and their families.
Services were held July 18. Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Suite 115, Sacramento, CA 95815-5000.

Randal Williams
Memorial services for Randal Williams of Elk Grove who died July 16, 2006, will take place today (Friday).
Mr. Williams, 51, was born in San Jose and lived in the Sacramento/Elk Grove area for 19 years.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Roberta Williams; children Jeremy and Lee Williams; and grandchildren Melinda, Brandon, Aaron, Krystal, Jordan and Michael.
Mr. Williams was the son of Charles and Joy Williams and the brother of Logan and Lisa Williams.
Today’s services begin at 7 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment is private.
Barbara Fife
Barbara V. Fife, a longtime resident of Sacramento County and Wilton, died in Wilton Oct. 10, 2006 at the age of 70.
Mrs. Fife was the administrative assistant at Valley High School from the school’s beginning in 1977 until her retirement in 1998.
She and her husband were active with Tennessee Walking Horses in the Elk Grove/Wilton area and spent several years fundraising for the Jessie Baker School. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star in Utah, and a member of Valley Hi Country Club and Chapter IP of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.
Mrs. Fife was a native of Ohio and moved to this area 32 years ago.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Robert Fife of Wilton; children Rob Fife and wife Kathy of North Carolina and Jon Randal Fife of Wilton; sister Marilyn Jenkins of Anaheim and brother Jim Zogg and wife Carol of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.
Private family memorial services were held. Remembrances may be made to Mercy Hospital, 4001 J St., Sacramento, CA 95819.

Leona Chauvie
Leona H. Chauvie, a 14-year resident of the area, died in Sacramento Oct. 11, 2006 at the age of 86.
Mrs. Chauvie was a native of Wilkenson, Wash., and was known as being an avid reader.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl in 2000, and her sister Paulette.
Mrs. Chauvie was the sister-in-law of Dorothy Chauvie of Bellflower, godmother of Diana Goodenough and husband Marshall, soul mate of Angie Baker of Redwood City, and aunt of Steven Chauvie and wife Maureen of Elk Grove and Dona Sidebottom and husband Bill of Huntington Beach.
Private family graveside services will be held at a later date with inurnment in the Alta Mesa Cemetery, Palo Alto next to her late husband.

Lester Mahon
Lester Mahon, member of a pioneer family, native and lifelong resident of Elk Grove, died Oct. 11, 2006 at the age of 94.
Mr. Mahon was born Feb. 13, 1912 to John William and Bethany Mae Mahon in the family ranch home where he lived and died. He attended the San Joaquin School and graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1929.
He enjoyed sharing memories of his childhood with his family, including vacationing at Pacific Grove every year with the McConnell family, racing his horse home from school, playing in the big fig tree behind the school house, building things under the mentorship of George Carr and reading westerns.
He also loved going deer hunting with his brothers and uncle Henry Ehrhardt, but was never very successful because he loved the animals too much.
Mr. Mahon also loved going with his father to help round up and ship cattle each year, and started ranching and farming full time with his dad and brothers following graduation. He managed to patch up enough harnesses and plow and plant enough ground up at Clay to secure a loan from the bank to purchase a 1935 Caterpillar, and worked in shifts with his brothers to plow and plant fields at Clay Station and on rented ground. The ‘Cat’ was run 24 hours a day.
He acquired mountain pasture property from the Schneider family near Silver Lake, and drove cattle from Clay Station, many times with the Windmiller family, until the 1940s.
Mr. Mahon helped work cattle at the chute until 2004.
On July 1, 1944 he married Charlotte Anne Israel, and the couple celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1994.
Although ranching is sometimes viewed as a romantic profession, son Tom said his father was well aware of the practical side of the business. “Without computers or calculators he knew how many pounds a steer should gain each day given the type of feed he was on and the recent weather, he knew how many head a pasture could carry, he knew exactly when to harvest the silage, mow the hay or breed the cows.”
Mr. Mahon was also an accomplished leather worker who could braid a lasso from horse hair; and was a self-taught mechanical engineer, having designed and built from spare parts a complicated mill which ground corn, chopped hay while blending molasses and feed nutrients in just the right cattle feed mix to bring optimum results.
His family said he never had a desire to travel widely but was very aware of local, national and international events, following politics closely. “He was a man of strength, character and integrity,” they said.
He was a member of the Herald Riders Club and a lifetime member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, and a willing source to anyone interested in the history of Elk Grove or Sacramento County.
Mr. Mahon was preceded in death by his sister Muriel and his brothers William and Donal (Top).
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Charlotte Mahon; children Robert, Jack and Tom Mahon and Linda Lema all of Elk Grove; grandchildren Stacey, Natalie, Christopher, Michelle, Travis and Troy; great-grandchildren Cody and Cheyenne; and brother Dick Mahon.
Funeral services took place Monday with interment in Elk Grove District Cemetery

Charlotte Mahon
Charlotte Anne Mahon, a resident of the Elk Grove area for 67 years, died March 6, 2007 at the age of 87 years.
She was born Sept. 19, 1919 near Maxwell, Neb. to George Cyril and Orveido Israel on the family farm where she lived until her father was killed in an accident in December 1923. Mrs. Israel then moved the family to the Kansas-Colorado border to live with her folks.
She remarried in1924, to George Westgarth and they moved to Goodland, Kan. when Charlotte was in the third grade.
During the Great Depression, the family set out for Oregon, but their trailer would go no farther than Loveland, Colo. and there they stayed, picking fruits. Charlotte Israel graduated from high school there in 1938.
The family then set out for the West Coast, landing in Yakima, Wash. where they picked fruit and worked in canneries to make ends meet. Mrs. Mahon recalled these years as being very educational, meeting people from all walks of life as jobs were still very hard to come by. She made 30 cents an hour on a 10-hour shift in the packing plant.
From Yakima they went to Portland, then to The Dalles. While there, George Westgarth’s aunt invited them to come to Sheldon where she had a farm and a job, so they came to Sheldon in 1940.
One day a local farmer, Don Mahon came looking for someone to cook for the men at his ranch and care for his ailing wife. Charlotte took the job, getting along famously with his wife as well as his son, Lester.
Following Mrs. Don Mahon’s death in 1944, Charlotte went to work at Bryan Miles’ cash store in Sheldon. Then on July 1, 1944 she and Lester were married in St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Galt.
They settled on the Mahon ranch where Mrs. Mahon continued to cook for her family and any hired men. She participated in her children’s activities, including being one of the founding members of the Elk Grove Mothers Club and teaching Sunday school at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
She was also active in the California Cattlewomen’s Association that named her Cowbelle of the Year in 1998.
“Charlotte was an accomplished artist,” said her family. She painted in oils, watercolors, and also ceramics.” Other interests included collecting rocks, hiking in the mountains, and growing flowers, fruits and vegetables. She and Lester both belonged to the Herald Riders Club, a group of ranchers who loved to get together for horse shows and brandings. Lester died Oct. 11, 2006.
Mrs. Mahon is survived by her children, Robert, Jack and Tom Mahon and Linda Lema all of Elk Grove; grandchildren Stacey, Natalie, Christopher, Michelle, Travis, Troy, Candy and Mitchell; and great-grandchildren Cody, Cheyenne, Alexis, Tatum, Tyler and Riley.
She was the sister of Warren Westgarth and Ruth Yeamans.
Funeral services were held March 12 at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, followed by interment in Elk Grove District Cemetery.
