Bernice Gallup
The end of an era came Sunday with the death of Bernice Gallup April 27, 2003 at the age of 95.
Funeral services will take place Friday, May 2.
Mrs. Gallup was a true "country correspondent," writing the Wilton Notebook for the Elk Grove Citizen for many years in which she chronicled the comings and goings, the "hatchings, matchings and dispatchings" of the area's residents. She was also the social editor during the days when writing weddings meant describing every flounce on the bride's petticoat. "When Bernice wrote up your wedding, you knew you were married," said one bride.
But her homespun style appealed to her readers, and Citizen publisher Roy Herburger told her not to change.
"Bernice marched to her own drummer," said Mary Lewis of the Citizen. "We instituted time cards; Bernice just wrote "8 to 5" every day on hers, even though she appeared at work about 3 or 4 p.m. and wrote until midnight."
Staff writer Keith Gebers remembers taking walks at night by the office and seeing Bernice in the corner pecking away on her typewriter with the office cat stretched across the desk.
Mrs. Gallup was born Sept. 14, 1907 in Elgin, N.D. to Chester and Pauline Lipelt. She often said her mother would have claimed they switched babies on her if she had not been born at home.
The family moved to Lodi in the 1920s and Bernice helped out with finances by packing pears in the Delta. She went to business school in Sacramento and then Munson's School for Private Secretaries in San Francisco, working for several years in that city for various companies. But she always returned each summer to pack the fruit.
And it was in the packing sheds that she met her husband Walter, an operator of heavy equipment. They were married in 1932 and for four years traveled up and down the state following his job.
But with a 2-year-old, they decided it was time to stay in one place. So they answered an ad for a place in Wilton and bought 20 acres with a three-room house and inside bathroom for $2,500, moving to Davis Road in 1936.
Mrs. Gallup had always had a penchant for writing, and one day decided to send the Sacramento Union a story on a kid goat riding on a cow's back. The paper liked it, and she began a career as a country correspondent which lasted for 25 years. In the 1950s she began writing for the Citizen, in fact, when the Herburgers purchased the business in 1959, they were informed that "Bernice goes with the place."
A proud moment came in her life when she received her high school diploma June 17, 1960 for which she had worked at various times for 33 years.
Mrs. Gallup was also active in the community, working on Christmas baskets for the needy, the Alta Mesa Fair, the Western Festival, teaching Sunday school at St. Peter's Lutheran Church where she was a member as well as the Penwomen of America and the Wilton Thursday Club.
In 1974 Elk Grove named her as its Citizen of the Year.
Upon her retirement in 1986, Elizabeth Pinkerton wrote in "History Happened Here" that "What Herb Caen has been to San Francisco, Bernice Gallup has been to Wilton."
Mrs. Gallup was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Walter, her son Aaron and her brothers, Randolph, Werner and Erwin Lipelt.
She is survived by her son Wayne; her grandchildren Jonathan Gallup and Maieve Gallup both of  Texas, and Caitlin Paulus of Arizona; and her great-grandchildren Darien and Aeden Gallup, Patrick and Stephen  Johnson and Eric Paulus.
She was the sister of Ariel Mettler and Elaine Michels both of Lodi.
Services will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, May 2 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 8701 Elk Grove-Florin Road. Visitation is today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment is private.
