Joseph Dodge
Joseph Carman Dodge, a resident of Elk Grove for the past 19 years, died Nov. 5, 2003, at Mather Hospital in Sacramento. Mr. Dodge, a native of  Pennsylvania, was 67.
He served in the U.S. Army, and following his discharge he worked at Hughes Aircraft and NASA. He was an electrical engineer, and while at NASA worked on the instrument panel of the first unmanned spacecraft, Surveyor I, that went to the moon in 1966.
Mr. Dodge is survived by his wife, Ladell Dodge of Elk Grove; his son, Mark Dodge of southern California; his mother, Josephine Lowe of Las Vegas; and three granddaughters.
He was the brother of Koko Dodge of  Washington, Ray Dodge and Barbara Satterwaite of Las Vegas, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Services were private. Arrangements were by the Nautilus Society.

Alma Lopes
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, for Alma Marie Lopes who died Nov. 16, 2003, at the age of 93.
Mrs. Lopes was born in San Francisco, but lived for 90 of her 93 years in Wilton.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Joe Lopes of Wilton; her son, Albert Lopes also of Wilton; her grandchildren, Deanna, Teresa, Michele, Joseph and Nicole; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation is today (Wednesday) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Thursday's services begin at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road in Elk Grove. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made to St. Joseph's Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Rd., Elk Grove, CA 95624.

Grace Fenstermacher
Grace E. Fenstermacher of Elk Grove, a greeter at Wal-Mart since its opening here 12 years ago, died Dec. 22, 2003, at the age of 73.
Mrs. Fenstermacher was born in Fulton Township, Lancaster County, Pa., July 13, 1930 to Wilmer and Esther Mae Carroll. She grew up in Lancaster County, graduating from Quarryville High School. She was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Peach Bottom, Pa.
In Elk Grove Mrs. Fenstermacher was an avid golf and basketball fan and was devoted to the Sacramento Kings. She was also a Krispy Kreme doughnut enthusiast and was known as "Cruisin' Grandma" because of the PT Cruiser she drove.
Mrs. Fenstermacher was preceded in death by her husband of 24 years, Ray in 1974; and her sister, Doris V. Pyle.
She is survived by her sons, Stephen Fenstermacher and wife Dianna of Elk Grove and Wayne Fenstermacher and wife Kelly of Pottstown, Pa.; and her grandson Robert Fenstermacher of Elk Grove.
Mrs. Fenstermacher was the sister of Fred Carroll and wife Patricia of S. Ozone Park, N.Y., Ruth Coakley and husband William of Annandale, Va., H. Kathryn  Taylor of Franklin, Ohio and Jeanne Paules of Mountville, Pa.
Other survivors include her brother-in-law Kenneth Fenstermacher and wife Wanda of Lancaster, Pa., and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held Dec. 27 at South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove. A memorial service will take place in the spring in  Pennsylvania.
Remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Sacramento, CA 95815.

Alba Hoyer
A memorial Mass will be held today (Wednesday, May 12) for Alba (Vovie) Hoyer, a 25-year resident of Elk Grove who died May 5, 2004.
Mrs. Hoyer helped start the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop in Elk Grove, and was also active in the Elk Grove Republican Women for several years.
She was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Ivo and Maria Jordao Arruda. Her father owned a newspaper, Imprenza, and after young Alba completed finishing school, she went to work as a reporter. She interviewed many dignitaries who came to Brazil during World War II, including Dwight Eisenhower and Douglas MacArthur.
Then one night at a party at the American embassy she met a U.S. Air Force pilot, Richard Hoyer, who was stationed in Brazil as a flight instructor for Brazilian pilots. In spite of the fact the couple was chaperoned on their dates, they married on May 25, 1946.
They stayed in Rio following his discharge and Richard went into the import/export business with his father-in-law.
In 1949 he was recalled into the service and sent to Korea, so Mrs. Hoyer moved to  Washington, D.C. with two small children by then. "This was a woman who had never had to cook or keep house," said her daughter. "But she learned quickly and also took up sewing and became an excellent seamstress."
Following Korea the family was stationed in Germany and here Mrs. Hoyer produced shows to entertain the troops, making costumes including hats and even dancing in some of the shows. Her daughter remembers traveling throughout Italy, Spain, Holland and France during this period.
From Germany they went to St. Louis, then England then back to St. Louis. By this time the Vietnam War was being waged, and the Hoyers were sent to Honolulu, where he traveled back and forth to Vietnam.
The Brazilian airline, Varig, opened a branch in Honolulu and Mrs. Hoyer became a liaison for the company, greeting dignitaries who came from Brazil. She was the Brazilian consulate until her husband retired Jan. 1, 1970, and they moved to Homestead, Fla. where much of his family lived.
In 1979 they came to Elk Grove to be near their daughter and family. Mr. Hoyer died in 1987.
Mrs. Hoyer enjoyed helping with field trips at Feickert Elementary School where her grandchildren attended, and taking jazzercise.
In all of her travels, she was very active with the Officers Wives Club and also enjoyed the opera. "She knew all the classical music," said her daughter, "and she was also multi-lingual, speaking Portuguese, English, French and Spanish."
Mrs. Hoyer is survived by her children, Richard Hoyer of Hawaii and Nancy Kalpakgian and husband Ari of Elk Grove; her grandchildren, Dawn Williams, Kathy McDonald, Anna Kalpakgian and Melissa Hoyer; and her great-grandchildren, Katherine, Liam and Isaac.
Today's services begin at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road. Interment in South East Lawn Memorial Park will be private.
Arrangements are by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Marian Clark
Memorial services will be held Friday, May 14 for Marian E. Clark, a 55-year resident of West Sacramento who died May 4, 2004 at home at the age of 77.
Mrs. Clark was born in Berkeley and was employed with the Department of General Services printing operation for 35 years.
She is survived by her son Ronald Clark and wife Judith of Elk Grove; grandson Greg Clark and wife Kim, and great-granddaughter Megan all of Galt; and stepson Gregg Hester and wife Joy, and great-granddaughter Sevanna Rose all of Virginia.
Friday's services begin at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 8701 Elk Grove-Florin Road. Remembrances may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children, 2425 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

Marilyn Twitchell
Marilyn Twitchell, one of the original settlers in Rancho Murieta, died July 3, 2004 at the age of 75.
Mrs. Twitchell and her husband Glenn were actively involved in the Rancho Murieta community for 24 years until they moved to Rocklin five years ago. She enjoyed time with her grandchildren as well as gardening, traveling and bridge.
Mrs. Twitchell is survived by her husband of 44 years, Glenn; her children, Steven and Jennifer; her stepdaughters, Annette, Adrian, Rene and Suzanne; and her grandchildren, Jesse, Desiree, Nicholas, Kelly, Reed and Ava.
She was the sister of Marge, Bob, Alan and Carl.
Memorial services were held July 14. Remembrances may be made to UC Davis Children's Hospital, 2315 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95817.

Jack Ragsdale
Funeral services will be held today (July 28) for Jack Curtis Ragsdale of Elk Grove who died July 21, 2004 at the age of 62.
Mr. Ragsdale was born June 5, 1942 in Easley, S.C. to J.T. and D. Avenell. He came to the Sacramento-Elk Grove area in 1954.
He spent 43 1/2 years with Proctor and Gamble at their Sacramento plant with assignments in China in the late 1980s and in Malaysia from 1991 to 1997.
Following the latter tour, the family lived in Cincinnati for three years before returning to Elk Grove in 2000.
Mr. Ragsdale enjoyed traveling, especially overseas with his job. For the past few years he raised a small herd of beef cattle on his ranch and was looking forward to retirement and making improvements to the property.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marcia K. Rousseau Ragsdale; his children, Kimberly Phillips and husband Kevin, Stephanie Kneppel and husband Brian and Curtis M. Ragsdale and wife Felicia; and his grandchildren, Lauren Phillips, Erika Phillips, Austin Ragsdale and Savannah Ragsdale.
Mr. Ragsdale was the brother of Joe S. Ragsdale and Linda Ragsdale Share.
Wednesday's services begin at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Elk Grove, 8939 East Stockton Blvd. Graveside services will follow at Franklin Cemetery, Franklin Boulevard and Hood-Franklin Road.
Remembrances may be made to Tree of Life Community Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 581105, Elk Grove, CA 95858.

Judith Sprock
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Oct. 9 for Judith (Judy) Sprock, a lifelong resident of the Elk Grove area, who died Sept. 26, 2004 at the age of 62.
Mrs. Sprock was born April 19, 1942 to T.R. and Florence Campbell of Elk Grove and grew up here, graduating from Elk Grove High School.
She was the owner of Cottage Creations, a children's clothing store, and Hairitage House, hair salon, two businesses in Old Town Elk Grove during the 1980s and early '90s. She was also a member of Old Town Merchants Association and Point Pleasant United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Sprock was preceded in death by her father, T.R. Campbell.
Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Allen Sprock of Elk Grove; her children, Frank Sprock and Nancy Wood, and Janus Sprock also of Elk Grove; her grandchildren, Sarah Sprock and Anne and Christine Wood; and her mother, Florence Campbell of Crescent City.
The Sprocks were foster parents, and also surviving are foster children Tracie and Diane and grandchildren Tony and Timmy.
Pastor Neal Harrell will officiate at Saturday's services which begin at 2 p.m. at Point Pleasant United Methodist Church, 3329 Point Pleasant Road. Interment is private.
Remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 1501 El Camino Ave., Suite 4, Sacramento, CA 95815.
