William E. Ramos passed away on Dec. 18, 2004. Born on Oct. 28, 1940, to Carmelo and Mary Ramos, he was 64 years old. Bill was a lifetime farmer in the Winters area, raising such tree crops as prunes, peaches, almonds and walnuts until his retirement in 2000. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending many falls hunting deer and elk in Southern Colorado with friends. He was a "crack" shot with both rifle and shotgun, spending much of his free time at Yolo Sportsman1s Association shooting trap and skeet. He was also a great fan of football as well as being an outstanding football player during his high school and junior college years at Winters and Yuba Jr. College in the late 1950s. Bill will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his son, Jason; brothers Carl and Tom Ramos; sisters Lola Riolo and Ramona Marten; stepchildren, Shelley Pardi, Dawn Mayes, Shane McBurnett and Arnie McBurnett; numerous nieces and nephews and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta, who passed away on Dec. 2, 2004, and by his parents. A visitation was held on Dec. 22, from 5-8 p.m. at McCune Garden Chapel, in Vacaville. Graveside services will be held for Bill at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 23, 2004 at the Winters Cemetery. Remembrances may be made in his name to the American Diabetes Association or to the Mary and Carmelo Ramos Scholarship Fund, c/o First Northern Bank, 48 Main Street, Winters, CA 95694. McCune Garden Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Rita Ehret, a longtime Winters resident, passed away on Dec. 9, 2004, at Sutter Davis Hospital in Davis. Born on Sept. 16, 1916 in Los Gatos, to Louis and Rita Szekeres. She was 88 years old. Rita graduated from San Jose High School and later attended Stanford University where she graduated Com Laude. She worked for many years as the Society Editor for the Salinas Journal. She enjoyed photography and entered her photographs in numerous photography shows. In 1950, she married Relph Ehret at the Stanford Memorial Chapel. She was preceded in death by Relph. Friends were invited to attend a graveside funeral service on Wednesday, Dec. 15, at 11 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery, 415 Cemetery Drive, in Winters. Reverend Mary Lynn Tobin from the Davis Community Church officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Funeral Chapel.

Marie Castro went home to be with the Lord on Dec. 4, 2004. Born on Feb. 3, 1926, in Fairfield to John and Isabel Fernandez, she was 77 years old. She married George Castro on Nov. 25, 1945. After residing in Redwood City for 21 years, they returned to Winters in 1961 to purchase and farm the family ranch. Marie retired from Mariani Nut Company after many years of employment. She enjoyed being with family and friends, some of her hobbies included taking long walks, rides through the countryside, gardening, floral arranging, and especially sharing her love in Jesus Christ. Marie is survived by her husband George, daughters Anita Melville, of Sacramento, and Nancy Gonnella, of Winters; son Joseph Castro, of Winters; grandchildren Michael, Danielle, Joey, Autumn, Raven, Nicole, and Cale. A service will be held in her honor on Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 10:30 a.m. at New Life Family Church, 315 Edwards Street, in Winters. Contributions may be made in her name to "Focus on the Family," Colorado Springs, Colorado, 80995, and the Winters Assembly of God Building Fund, 315 Edwards Street, Winters, CA 95694.

Elvin David Basinger passed away on Friday, Dec. 3, 2004 in Davis at the age of 84. Born in Victorville on Nov. 17, 1920, he was one of 12 children born to Sylvester David and Emma Basinger. He has been a resident of Davis, Winters, and Esparto for the past 58 years and retired from the Pacific Gas and Electric company following 42 years of service. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Verna, who died in 1995. He is survived by his children and their spouses James and Janice Basinger of Gabbs, Nevada, Mary (Midge) Holmes of Elk Grove, and David and Lynda Basinger of Denham Springs,  Louisiana; his brother and sister-in-law Charles and Joanne Basinger of Fairfield; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A visitation was held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 4-8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Davis. A funeral service was held at the Davis Funeral Chapel at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8, followed by internment at the Winters Cemetery.

Bettymae Todrank passed away on Dec. 2, 2004. Born in Winters on Jan. 8, 1924, to Craig Niemann and Nannie Sinclair Niemann. She was 79 years old. She grew up in Winters and graduated from Winters High School in 1941. She spent one year at U.C. Davis before moving to Sacramento to work for an insurance company. She married Robert Todrank on April 4, 1947. She was a loving mother, community volunteer and loving wife. She enjoyed knitting, playing with her children and grandchildren, cooking and vacationing in Black Butte Ranch, Oregon. She is survived by her children, Kathy and her husband Paul, Nancy and her husband Jim, Craig and his wife Myra; aunt, Lavinia Young; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Following private services, she was buried on Wednesday, Dec. 8, at the Niemann plot in the Winters Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Sutter Hospice in Sacramento.

Rose A. Lorenzi passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at her daughter's home in Truckee, at the age of 96 years. She was born in Oakland, on March 6, 1908 to Vito Silvester and Philomena Riccetta. She was the sixth of their eight children, Frank, Joe, Al, Mike, Mary, Rose, Theresa and Genevieve. All of them preceded Rose in death, as did Julius Lorenzi, to whom Rose was married on Sept. 23, 1928, in Oakland. They had 35 years together before Julius died on March 15, 1963. Rose worked at Lerners in San Francisco until she retired. A loving mother and a great cook, her life was devoted to her family and her faith. Ten years ago, she moved from Oakland to Winters to be close to her family. She is survived by her son, Paul Lorenzi and his wife, Barbara, of Winters; daughters, Gloria Filipelli and (late) husband, Antonio, of Rolling Meadows, Illinois, Alberta Ruppert and husband, Bill, of Truckee; also by 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Rose is also survived by her nephew, Art Vierra, of Pleasant Hill. A Catholic Requiem Mass was held on Monday, Nov. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Winters, with Father Chuck and others doing a superb job in memory of Rose. On Tuesday, Nov. 30, Rose was buried next to Julius at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, in Hayward.

Edward Duane "Eddy" Safreed passed away on Nov. 29, 2004, at his home in Winters, following a short, courageous fight with ALS. He was born on Aug. 10, 1953, on Mare Island, Vallejo, to Willis and Margith (Hillman) Slayton. He married Bette Kingsbury on his 35th birthday in 1988. He graduated from Mission Bay High School in San Diego in 1971. He first came to Winters when he was 15 years old to work in the apricot orchards. While here, he made many friends, so it became home to him again after high school and he resided in Winters for over 30 years. Eddy was employed by Vallejo Sanitation and Flood Control District as a CWEA Certified Collection Systems Tech, II. Eddy was a member of the Descendents of the Mayflower Society, Rainier Valley  Washington Historical Society, Yolo Sportsway, National Wild Turkey Federation, Wilderness Unlimited and Vallejo Elks Lodge. Eddy enjoyed hunting, camping and fishing and both snow and water skiing. He loved get-togethers with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Bette, of Winters; adopted daughter Melinda Hernandez, of Vacaville; stepsons Travis Swol, of Roseville, and Aaron Swol, of Minnesota; stepmother, Mikki Safreed, of Idaho; also by his grandchildren, Dustin, Trevor and Esmeralda. He is also survived by many relatives and friends who will miss his company. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie; his father, Willis; his stepfather, George Safreed; brother Charles Safreed; grandparents Amy and Charles Safreed and Helen and Clarence Hillman, Jr.; also by a nephew, Logan Safreed. There was a graveside service on Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Winters Cemetery, at noon. There will be a celebration of his life at a later date. Loretta Ramos, of Winters, passed away at her home after a courageous battle with cancer on Dec. 2, 2004. Born April 27, 1938, in Newfoundland, she was 66 years old. Loretta was married to Billy Ramos for 32 years, and was a homemaker for 42 years. She enjoyed her occasional trip to Cache Creek, loved to sing, laugh and spend time with her friends and family; especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Billy; daughters Shelly Pardi, Dawn Mayes and Shane McBurnett, all of Winters; sons, Arnie McBurnett, of Woodland and Jason Ramos, of San Diego; grandchildren, Andrea Mayes, Leah Mayes, Jonathon Pardi, Jenna Mayes, Ashley Pardi,  Taylor Mayes and Chris (Bubba) Mayes; longtime friend, Jessie MacKinney and best friend and sister, Barb. Loretta was one of 11 children by her parents, John and Agnes Mitchell, who preceded her in death. Donations can be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society, 1652 West  Texas Street, Ste. 110, Fairfield, CA 94533. Visitation was held on Monday, Dec. 6, from 5-8 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, in Winters. Interment will follow at the Winters Cemetery. Arrangements were made under the direction of Milton Carpenter Funeral Home.

Eugene Wittman went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 29, 2005. Born on Oct. 26, 1914 in Petersburg, Michigan, he was 91 years old.
Gene loved the outdoors. Many happy family times were spent sharing the joy he found in nature on hunting and fishing trips. He also enjoyed working with his hands and constructing things from wood. Most of his time was spent pursuing his love for business.
Raised in the automobile business, Gene continued the tradition, owning dealerships in Michigan and California. Hs last businesses were Wittman Motors, Wittman Ford, and Wittman Auto Center in Lake County, where he and his wife, Dorothy, lived from 1971 until they moved to Winters in 2004.
He lived his life guided by his deep faith and understanding of the Lord. His family will always cherish his legacy of loving kindness, politeness, generosity of spirit and demonstration of unwavering faith. Scripture says that the just shall live by faith, and without faith, we cannot please God. Gene must have really pleased God.
He will be forever missed by his caring wife of 66 years, Dorothy; children Nancy Frye and her husband, Jerry, Nick Wittman and his wife, Susan, and Nola Montgomery; grandchildren Laurie Brown, Lisa Tesch, Jerry Frye, Tammy Phillips, Brandy Wittman, Wade Wittman, Hope Wittman, Jessica Eisner, Chris, Erica, Jenna and Cheryl and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sons, Niels and Eugene.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Kelseyville Presbyterian Church, or that an act of kindness be performed in his honor.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. at Pioneer Presbyterian Church, 205 Russell Street, in Winters.

Mr. Jose Serrano, a 53-year resident of Winters, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Mercy General Hospital, in Sacramento. Born on Sept. 14, 1928, he was 76 years old.
Mr. Serrano came to Winters from Spain where he had served in the military. He worked for a short time as a sheep herder and then went to work for Basic Foods in Vacaville. He retired from American Home Foods in Vacaville as a machine operator. His pastimes included gardening, bicycle riding and reading.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Maria Serrano, of Winters; children Jose Serrano and his wife, Christina, of Folsom, and Beatrice Jordan, of Winters; also, grandchildren Jonathon and Jennifer Jordan, of Winters and Austin, Katelyn and Ethan Serrano, all of Folsom; he is also survived by his sisters Joaquina Serrano Martinez, of Spain, and Isabel Ramos, of Winters.
A rosary will be held on Sunday, Jan. 30, at 7p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, at Third and Main streets in Winters. The Funeral Mass will be on Monday, Jan. 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.

Christopher F. Rubio passed away unexpectedly in Sacramento on Jan. 26, 2005. Born on March 1, 1957 in Charleston,  South Carolina, he was 47 years old.
He is survived by his mother, Iris Rubio, of Charleston; daughter Maegan Abbott, of Cameron Park; brothers, Guy S. Rubio of Sacramento and Richard Rubio, of Winters, and a sister, Denise Pittman, of Charleston. He is also survived by two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Christopher W. Rubio.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m. at the Winters Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made in his name to the Salvation Army.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
