Charlene Weaver
Charlene Weaver, a resident of Elk Grove for the past four years, died Feb. 24, 2006 at the age of 87.
She and husband George Weaver moved to Roseville in 1969 where she was a 25-year volunteer at Roseville Hospital and a member of the Railroad Lady Trainmen Auxiliary. George Weaver preceded her in death.
Mrs. Weaver is survived by her son Steven Weaver and wife Pat of Elk Grove; and grandchildren Pam Carpenter and husband Rick and Randall Weaver and wife Rebecca all of Galt.
Also surviving her are five great-grandchildren, Joshua and Kaitlin Carpenter, Gavin and Maggie Weaver and Greg Hamilton.
Graveside services were held Feb. 27 at Roseville Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Vitas Hospice, 3841 N. Freeway Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95834.

MARIANN NIETO
Funeral services for Mariann Nieto, who passed away April 2, will be held Wednesday April 12 at 6 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Boulevard.
Nieto, 34, was a retired firefighter with the Elk Grove Community Services District. She is the daughter of Mary and Ramon Nieto, and is survived by three sisters, Donna Hendrix, Debbie (Dean) Crist, Lori (Pat) Bowen, brother Terry Whisenhunt.
She is the granddaughter of Donna and Lincoln Charley of Medford, Oregon and niece of Marlene Nieto, the late Richard Nieto, John Nieto, Angela Luchini and Tim Brazy.
Relatives say Nieto was an avid swimmer and loved animals, especially her cats and dogs.
They added she was a fan of NASCAR racing and the Green Bay Packers.

BERTHA McKEAN
Longtime Wilton resident Bertha McKean passed away at Camillia House in Sacramento recently, at the age of 92.
Mrs. McKean was preceded in death by her husband Charles McKean.
Her parents were Louie Daniels and Winnie Evans Maldonado.
Siblings include Benjamin Maldonado, Pearl Carter, Helen Wessell and Manual Maldonado. She is survived by her sons William (Bill) Daniels, James Daniels and Richard (Dickie) Daniels, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and seven step-children. She has four brothers, Alfred F. Maldonado, Richard Maldonado (Betty), Carrie Hadera (Joe), and Norma Sepeda, in addition to numerous cousins and extended family.

Tech. Sgt. Barbara Smith
Graveside services are taking place today for Tech. Sgt. Barbara Smith, a former resident of this area who died April 26, 2007 at her home in Knob Noster, Mo. following a battle with cancer.
Sgt. Smith was born Sept. 14, 1973 in Simi Valley, and graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1991.
She then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and rose to the rank of engineering journeyman.
Bases she was stationed at included Tinker Air Force Base,  Oklahoma; Misawa Air Base, Japan; Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
In May 2004 she went to the 509th Civil Engineer Squadron,  Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri and was there at the time of her death.
She was a graduate of Airman Leadership School and had completed her associate’s degree in construction trends and technology from the Community College of the Air Force.
Sgt. Smith’s interests outside the military included gardening, bird watching, painting, crocheting, horseback riding and motorcycling.
She and Tech. Sgt. Scott Smith were married on Nov. 20, 2003.
He survives her as do her parents Quinton and Sharon Mitchell of Wilton; brother Paul Mitchell of South Dakota; sisters Tina Crawley and husband Greg of Salem, Ore., Candace Scillieri and husband Ken of El Paso,  Texas and Michelle Jaczola and husband Mike of Elk Grove; niece Christi and nephews Nic, Todd and Vinny.
She was preceded in death by her mother-in-law Florence Smith.
Sgt. Smith was the daughter-in-law of Vernon Smith Sr. and wife Deloris of Minerva, N.Y., and the sister-in-law of Vernon Smith Jr., companion Ashley Conlon and their daughter Autumn.
Today’s services are being conducted with full military honors at Minerva Baptist Cemetery, Minerva, N.Y.

Robert Ferris
Robert John Ferris, a longtime resident of Elk Grove, died April 3, 2007 following a long battle with lung disease. He was 55.
Mr. Ferris was an avid baseball fan; in fact his family quoted him as saying “Baseball is Life.” He was actively involved in Little League baseball from coaching to watching to taking pictures.
Fishing, photography and bike riding were other interests, and his wife Candi said they enjoyed traveling with neighbor Wally on the Laguna Creek trail where Mr. Ferris photographed the beavers, egrets and Canada geese.
Mr. Ferris was born Aug. 22, 1951 in Amityville, N.Y. He worked as a multimedia specialist for Aerojet and his wife said he continually pestered the doctors to let him go back to work.
He was preceded in death by his father William Ferrie.
Mr. Ferris is survived by his wife Candi, son Brian Ferris and mother Jane Ferrie all of Elk Grove; brother Tom Ferris of Atlanta, Ga.; and stepsons David and Chris Siefker.
Services were held April 9 with interment in South East Lawn Memorial Park, Elk Grove. Remembrances may be made to the American Lung Association, 909-12th St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
Arrangements were by South East Lawn Mortuary.

Helen Crujido
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday, July 27 for Helen Crujido, a longtime resident of the Sacramento Delta, who died July 20, 2007 at the age of 91.
Mrs. Crujido was born in San Bernardino and had lived in the Delta area for the past 67 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eusebio Crujido who died in 1979, and sisters Beatrice Oropesa, Eva Gonzales and Lupe Verala.
Mrs. Crujido is survived by her children Sally Trevino and husband Daniel of Tracy, Carl Crujido and wife Deanna of Arizona, Lillian Cubillo and husband John of Fremont, Christopher Crujido of Arizona and Carmen Crujido of Elk Grove; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Visitation is Thursday, July 26 from noon to 8 p.m. with the recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. in the chapel of East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd. Friday’s Mass will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road, followed by interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Muriel Watkins
Services are this morning (Wednesday) for Muriel Marlene Watkins, a longtime former resident of Elk Grove who died July 20, 2007 at the age of 71.
Mrs. Watkins worked for the U.S. Post Office for 36 years before retiring, and most of that time was spent at the Elk Grove post office.
She was born on Feb. 17, 1936 to Fred and Hellace Wachtel in Sacramento, and grew up in this area, graduating from Elk Grove High School. On June 27, 1954 she and William Martin Watkins were married.
The couple moved to Browns Valley in 1990 where Mrs. Watkins served as postmaster. She was a member of a professional organization for postmasters, the Browns Valley Lions Club and the Special Olympics.
Interests included traveling and bowling. Her family said that if asked a question, she was quick to respond with precise honesty and her opinion was well noted.
Mrs. Watkins was preceded in death by her husband William and her daughter Cinda Gillock.
She is survived by daughter Naomi Darling of Rio Linda; sons Norman Watkins of Ashton, Idaho and Edward Watkins of Florin; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Watkins was the sister of Florence Miller of Florin.
Today’s services begin at 10 a.m. at Sacramento Memorial Lawn, 6100 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento. Remembrances may be made to The Special Olympics, 1133 19th St. NW, 12th Floor,  Washington, DC 20036-3604, or at www.specialolympics.org.

Delbert Olson
Delbert Olson, longtime Elk Grove resident, former Elk Grove postmaster and an active community member, died April 12, 2007 after a brief battle with cancer.
Community activities included club leader for Elk Grove 4-H Club, president of the Elk Grove Park board and Elk Grove-Cosumnes Cemetery District, Past Humbug of New Helvetia chapter of E Clampus Vitas and past president of Elk Grove Parlor, Native Sons of the Golden West.
He was very active in the Elk Grove Masonic Lodge, cooking many Family Night, Master and Wardens dinners as well as assisting with the Candidates’ Banquets. He was honored with the Hiram Award in March 2000.
Mr. Olson’s membership in the lodge afforded his daughters and granddaughter the opportunity to join Job’s Daughters and to serve as Honored Queen and Grand Bethel Representatives, and his son to join DeMolay where he was a Master Councilor. Mr. Olson joined the Order of the Eastern Star two years ago as a member of the Elk Grove chapter.
He was born May 14, 1925 to Gus and Lily Olson, attended Franklin Grammar School and graduated from Elk Grove High School in 1943. He was very active in 4-H and FFA, becoming an FFA State Farmer, FFA State Treasurer and president of the Western Dairymen’s Association.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1945 and was in the Army Reserve until 1972.
Mr. Olson and his father established a dairy with Jersey cows until the early 1960s when the dairy was sold and he became a rural route carrier for the Elk Grove post office. He worked his way up the ladder, becoming postmaster in 1971 and then postmaster of the Woodland post office in 1974.
Following the end of his postal service he tended bar at the Pizza Barn in Elk Grove for 25 years.
His family said he was an avid San Francisco 49er fan and a season ticket holder for 26 years. He and companion Rose Blawat rarely missed a game.
During high school he met Betty Harder and they were married on May 28, 1953. She preceded him in death in 1984 as did his son David in 1957 and son-in-law Gordon Duncan in 2006.
Mr. Olson is survived by his children Linda Dunzweiler and husband Edward, Diane McCombs and husband Ric, John Olson and Nancy Olson; and grandchildren Amy and George Dunzweiler.
Services were held April 26 in Elk Grove Masonic Hall. Remembrances may be made to Mercy General Hospital Continuing Care, 3400 Date Drive, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670.
