Maybelle Barney
Maybelle K. Barney, a former longtime resident of Elk Grove, died May 1, 2007 at Magic Valley Manor Assisted Living in Wendell. She was 100.
Mrs. Barney was an apartment manager in Elk Grove, most particularly of the apartments at the corner of Sierra and Sara streets and Elk Grove-Florin Road. She watered the lawns and assisted in renting the apartments until moving two years ago to be near her son. There is a road named after her next to the golf course on Gerber Road east of Bradshaw Road.
She was born March 5, 1907 in Alameda to Solon Steven and Sadie Baxter Winchell. She married Daniel C. Danuser on Feb. 15, 1924 and following his death in 1941 she married Alfred Barney on Oct. 10, 1945. He preceded her in death in 1965.
Mrs. Barney is survived by her son Dan Danuser and wife Katie of Gooding; stepsons Bob Barney and wife Nancy of Georgetown and Pat Barney of Sacramento; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held May 5 at Demaray Funeral Service, Gooding Chapel with interment in Elmwood Cemetery, Gooding.

Tasha Brewer
Funeral services were held May 10 for Tasha Brewer of Hot Springs, Ark. who died in an accident May 6, 2007 at the age of 15.
She was part of a championship cheerleading team in California, and was captain of the Lakeside Jr. High School team in Hot Springs. She was also a member of the Girl Scouts, Future Business Leaders and National Honor Society.
Tasha is survived by her mother, Kimberli Brewer of Hot Springs, her father, Jim Brewer of Sacramento; grandmother Connie Ware of Hot Springs and brothers Austin and Keith Brewer.
Arrangements were by Gross Funeral Home, Hot Springs.

Buren H. Houser
A celebration of the life of Buren (Grandpa) Houser, a 29-year resident of Elk Grove, will take place Sunday, Nov. 12. Mr. Houser died Oct. 29, 2006 following a battle with cancer.
He was born May 4, 1932 in Scranton, Ark. and was a truck driver for 37 years, 10 of which were as owner-operator covering 11 western states.
Mr. Houser served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, during which time he spent a year on Iwo Jima refueling airplanes during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2073, Elk Grove, and participated every year in the VFW Buddy Poppy drive.
He was a member of the Early Ford V-8 Club of America and enjoyed driving his green ’53 Flathead Ford throughout the area.
Mr. Houser was very much a family man and while living in Rancho Cordova, he and his wife Shirley were active in Little League and Boy Scouts. He taught his grandchildren to drive tractors, shoot guns, fish and “boondock,” and share his love of camping, fishing, target shooting and puttering in his shop.
Mr. Houser married Shirley Whitten 53 years ago on Oct. 29, 1953, and she survives him as do his sons Ray and wife Elizabeth, Kevin and wife Leann and Randy and fiancée Doreen; and grandchildren Aaron, Lindsey and Jill.
He was the brother of Violet Morris and Joann Houser of Fort Smith, Ark.
Sunday’s celebration begins at 2 p.m. at the Elk Grove Elks Lodge, 9240 Survey Road off Grant Line Road and Highway 99.Guests are invited to bring their classic cars and dress is casual.
Remembrances may be made to the VFW Relief Fund, Post 2073, P.O. Box 2405, Elk Grove, CA 95759.

Lee Atwood
Lee Atwood Jr., a 24-year resident of Elk Grove, died Nov. 3, 2006 at the age of 80.
Mr. Atwood was born Jan. 15, 1926 in Kentucky to Nettie Laurence and John Lee Atwood, one of 11 siblings. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and after, and married Loretta Lucille Pinkston on Aug. 31, 1948 while still in the service in Tucson, Ariz.
The Atwoods lived in Glendale where they raised their daughters and Mr. Atwood worked for Lockheed’s Skunkworks. They moved to Elk Grove in 1982 to be near family, and he worked for Coen Engineering in Woodland before retiring.
His interests included hunting and fishing.
Mr. Atwood is survived by his wife Loretta; daughters Sandra Friend, Tariecca Engle and Debra Atwood all of Elk Grove; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He also leaves three sisters, Betty Welch of Georgia and Lucille Deering and Eva Rose of Kentucky.
A full military service was held Tuesday at South East Lawn Mortuary, Elk Grove.

Maj. Keith Gates
Retired U.S. Air Force Major Keith T. Gates, a longtime resident of Elk Grove, died May 14, 2005 at the age of 82.
Maj. Gates was born Nov. 11, 1922 in Mankato, Minn. to Bert and Jean Gates. He graduated from Denson Polytechnic High in Portland, Ore. and earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Idaho.
He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941 and served as a navigator in the South Pacific during World War II. Later, as an Air Force Reserve Officer, he served in the Korean War where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
In retirement, he was known as an accomplished woodworker and RV enthusiast.
Maj. Gates was preceded in death by his wives Alene Gates and Pauline Hildreth Gates, and son Jerry West.
He is survived by his daughter Nancy Lister and husband Jim; granddaughters Shannon Lister, Kelly Simoes and Tracy Penner-Ward; and two great-grandchildren.
Maj. Gates was the brother of Glenn, Russel and Thurston Gates. He also leaves behind four nephews and a niece.
Pastor Tom Norvell officiated at services May 17 at South East Lawn Memorial Park, Elk Grove.

Teresita Pascua
Funeral services will take place Monday, May 23 for Teresita Evangelista Pascua of Elk Grove who died May 17, 2005. She was a native of the Philippines.
Mrs. Pascua is survived by her daughters Marie Manley and husband Jeff and Maribeth Salmos and husband Darwin; and grandchildren D.J., Dean, Drayden and Brandon.
Visitation is Sunday, May 22 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a vigil beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Monday’s services begin at 10 a.m., also in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow in Hilltop Cemetery, Elk Grove.

Patricia Brunswick
A celebration of the life of Patricia Ann Brunswick, who died Jan. 10, 2005 after a long illness, will take place Saturday, Jan. 22.
Mrs. Brunswick was a teacher at Franklin Elementary School for more than 26 years before she retired and was also a youth leader and counselor at Florin United Methodist Church for several decades.
She was born Oct. 25, 1929 in Arkansas City, Kansas, four days before the stock market crash which led to the Great Depression. She came to California with her family as an elementary school student, and to the Sacramento area in 1959 where she and Glenn Brunswick were married in August. She received her degree in elementary education from Sacramento State College.
Her husband was principal of Florin Elementary School and both were active in the Florin church.
Mrs. Brunswick grew up with a love of music, especially singing, and sang many solos at church and weddings. She produced musicals with her students, her favorite, according to her family, was ‘Stone Soup.’
Duties at church as youth leader included yearly camping trips with the youth groups to Yosemite, Lake Tahoe and Santa Cruz. She enjoyed nature, and camped with her family as well as with church groups.
Mrs. Brunswick also coached several women’s basketball teams along with softball and volleyball. In retirement she enjoyed watching her grandchildren grow up with all their sporting, music and academic events.
Glenn Brunswick preceded his wife in death two years ago.
Mrs. Brunswick is survived by her children, Sherri Carlisle and husband Dave, Mike Brunswick, Terri  Washington and Pam Garrett; her grandchildren, Jason, Jenny, Mindy, Matt, Marti, Danny, Kelly and Kelly; and her sister-in-law Patti Stukey.
All of the family is from the Elk Grove area, and five are teaching in the Elk Grove Unified School District with two grandchildren beginning their careers in education.
Saturday’s services begin at 11 a.m. at Florin United Methodist Church, 7560 Florin Road at Palmer House Drive.
