Shirley Foster
Shirley Alice Foster, a former, longtime resident of Elk Grove, died Aug. 6, 2004 at Aspen Gardens Assisted Living in Cortez, Colo. She was 78.
Mrs. Foster was born Dec. 26, 1925 in Berkeley to Allen and Helen May (Douglas) McGahan, and grew up in Elk Grove, graduating from Elk Grove High School.
She worked as secretary at Elk Grove Elementary School for many years, and was the first person visitors saw when they entered the school. She also served on the first Elk Grove Unified School District School Names Committee.
Playing bridge was a passion of hers, and she belonged to several bridge clubs in the area. Friend Betty Lewis recalls picking her up and taking her when illness incapacitated her. "Shirley would call me and say 'you're not going to forget me, are you?'" Lewis said.
About seven years ago, Mrs. Foster moved to Colorado to be nearer family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Foster and her brother, Freddie McGahan.
Mrs. Foster is survived by her sons, Keith E. Foster and wife Margie of Durango, Colo. and Lester J. Foster of Albion Wash.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services took place Aug. 13 at the Cortez Cemetery. Arrangements were by Ertel Funeral Home, Cortez.
Mildred Alltucker
Mildred Black Alltucker, a former resident of Elk Grove, died Sept. 2, 2003, in Kansas at the age of 94.
Mrs. Alltucker was born to Joe and Jennie Black in Bruneau, Idaho. Her ancestors were some of the original settlers of the Snake River and Bruneau valleys. Mrs. Alltucker grew up in Idaho and taught in a one-room schoolhouse.
In 1941 she married Robert Alltucker, a highway patrolman from Elk Grove, and they settled in Elk Grove. During World War II, while her husband was with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific, she returned to Idaho where she worked the graveyard shift at the Union Pacific roundhouse.
Following the war she returned to Elk Grove where she and her husband, along with her sister and husband, Bessie and Robert Keith, operated the Orange Bin on old Highway 99 near Grant Line Road. The family lived in an upstairs apartment, rented from Henry and Sophie Lent.
Later, they moved to Sacramento. Mr. Alltucker died in 1976.
Mrs. Alltucker was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church, active in Eastern Star and Job's Daughters, and a substitute teacher in the Sacramento school district.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughters, Carol Ann and Crystal; her sister, Bessie Keith; and her brother, Albert Black.
She is survived by her daughter, Christine Brandenberger of Overbrook, Kansas; her brother, Paul Black of Shoofly, Idaho; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Alltucker is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including from this area Donald Keith of Folsom, Thomas Keith of Granite Bay, Cheryll Longhofer of Placerville and Kathleen Lykins of Orangevale.
Memorial services will take place in the spring in Bruneau. Remembrances may be made to the Bruneau Cemetery

Queta Valiente
A memorial service will take place Saturday, Aug. 2 for Queta Valiente of Elk Grove who died July 25, 2003 at the age of 87.
Mrs. Valiente was born Sept. 9, 1915 in El Salvador and came to this country many years ago. She became an American citizen about 10 years ago and was very proud of that honor, said her daughter, Ana Silva.
"She was a wonderful mother and homemaker," Silva said. "She was so close to her grandchildren, and we will miss her."
Mrs. Valiente lived in the Bay Area until three years ago when she moved to Elk Grove to live with her daughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luis A. Valiente, and her sons, Luis E. Valiente and Rafael A. Valiente.
Mrs. Valiente is survived by her children, Lina Kreysa and Ana J. Silva both of Elk Grove and Mauricio Valiente of El Salvador; 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Saturday's services will begin at 2 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment is private.
Thelma Curtis
Thelma Jean Curtis, sister of June Hanson of Elk Grove, receptionist/secretary at the Elk Grove Citizen, died Sunday, July 27, 2003 in Fayetteville, Ark. She was 72.
Mrs. Curtis was born June 25, 1931 in Baldwin, Ark. to Solomon Jack and Lydia Evelyn Ferguson Johnson and grew up in that state. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of Christ.
In 1950 the family moved to Northern California and lived in Antioch for 28 years before returning to Arkansas.
She was very interested in genealogy and her sister said she had compiled a great deal of information about their family.
Mrs. Curtis was preceded in death by her son, David Roger Curtis.
Besides her sister, she is survived by her husband, Dave Curtis of Farmington, Ark.; her children, Kevin Curtis of Arlington, Texas and Carla Warren of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was the aunt of David Williams of Folsom and Lisa Eichelberger of San Jose.
Services were held Wednesday in Fayetteville.
Francisco Nerona
A Mass of Christian burial will take place Monday, Aug. 4 for Francisco Lopez Nerona of Elk Grove who died July 29, 2003 at the age of 62.
Mr. Nerona was a native of the Philippines who had resided in Elk Grove for 19 years. He was a retired Vietnam veteran with the U.S. Navy, and a member of the Filipino-American Veterans Association of Sacramento.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years Nenita Nerona of Elk Grove; and his children, Glen Nerona of Daly City, Robbie Nerona of San Francisco and Eileen Nerona of Elk Grove.
Mr. Nerona was the brother of Teodoro Nerona of Virginia, Maxima Gines and Antonio Nerona of Illinois and Remigio Nerona of Hawaii.
Visitation is Saturday, Aug. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 8 p.m. with recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd.
Monday's Mass begins at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road, followed by interment in Elk Grove District Cemetery.
J.A. McFall
J.A. (Jack) McFall, a resident of Elk Grove for several years, died May 7, 2003 from a stroke. He was of 88.
Mr. McFall was born June 4, 1914 in McAllister, Okla. and moved to California from New Mexico in the 1930s. He and his wife harvested crops from the Imperial Valley to Marysville.
Later he went to work for a number of different companies including Linde Air Products, Bethlehem Steel, Food Machinery Corp. and Swift & Co. He retired from Burke Rubber Co. in San Jose in 1979.
Mr. McFall was a member of the Grand Lodge of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for 40 years. He was also a member of Elk Grove Grange No. 86.
In 1985 Mrs. McFall was diagnosed with cancer and the couple moved in with their daughter and son-in-law, Jonnie and Howard Sihner of Elk Grove. Mrs. McFall died in 1986 and Mr. McFall continued to live with the Sihners until his death. He suffered his first stroke in 1988 and managed to regain use of his left arm and leg and some of his speech.
He enjoyed tending to his flower garden and using his metal detector on many treasure hunts.
Mr. McFall was preceded in death by his wife, Panny and his son, Jack.
He is survived by his daughter, Jonnie Sihner and husband Howard of Elk Grove; his grandchildren, Richard Sihner of Oroville, Lori Pluto of Herald, Jeff McFall of Belmont, Mike McFall of San Carlos and Joann Ganjei of Redwood City; and his great-grandchildren, Jazzmine Pluto of Herald, Joshua McFall of Belmont, Travis and Cody Sihner of Sacramento, Josephine Sihner of Oroville and Jack Ganjei of Redwood City.
Mr. McFall was the brother of Harold McFall of Oakdale and Minna Lee Churchill of Rialto; and the brother-in-law of Georgene McFall of Salinas.
A private family service is pending. Arrangements are by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
Tony Duarte
Tony R. Duarte, longtime dairyman in Elk Grove, died March 13, 2003 at the age of 87.
He was born Feb. 12, 1916 in Flores, Azores, Portugal and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1956, settling in Elk Grove in 1959. They started their dairy a few years later.
Mr. Duarte was an active member of the S.E.S. Council No. 76 of Elk Grove and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the festa of Elk Grove, the U.P.E.C. Council No. 29, Portugal on the March, Echoes Portuguese and Our Lady of Fatima Celebration of Sacramento.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mary Duarte.
Mr. Duarte is survived by his sons, John Duarte and wife Margaret, and Tony Duarte and wife Antoinette, all of Elk Grove; his grandchildren, Justin, Todd, Tony, Jon and Regina Duarte; his niece, Norma De Sousa and husband Lino of Merced; and his nephew, Joe Freitas and wife Maxine of Antioch.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews on the East Coast, Canada and the Azores Islands.
Services were held March 18 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Elk Grove, followed by interment in South East Lawn Memorial Park. Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
