Emmet Arjo
January 10, 1910 - March 21, 2004
Birthplace: San Francisco, California
Resided In: Chico, California
Emmet Francis Arjo
January 10, 1910 – March 21, 2004
Retired grocer and longtime Chico resident.
Emmet entered this world with an independent spirit, a trait he held until his death at the young age of 94. Born in San Francisco’s South of Market district, Emmet’s family moved to the small town of Mayfield, now part of Palo Alto, when he was a young child. He held vivid memories of life in Mayfield and loved to tell stories of his childhood adventures. Those adventures often included his seven brothers and sisters, Mill Nelson, Frank Arjo, Jules Arjo, Ray Arjo, Eleanor Nelson, Dorothy Schnabel and Wilma Vaux.
Money was scarce, and Emmet took his first job as a paperboy selling the news to local soldiers. At age 12, he was sweeping the floors at a local market. His proudest career moment was purchasing that market at the age of 19. Emmet bought his second store while in his early twenties, but the war eventually forced him to close. He was stationed at Moffet Air Field and often joked that he was assigned to painting secretaries’ offices.
After the war, Emmet returned to Palo Alto to hold the grand opening for his third grocery store, “Emmet’s Market” in 1946. “Emmet’s” was the first store on the West Coast to have refrigeration and one of the first in the Bay Area to offer a full service deli. He often gave small jobs to the neighborhood children to put a little money in their pockets and teach them the life lessons that had helped him succeed.
Emmet retired at the age of 41, but continued to work in other aspects of his life. He married his dance and life partner Genevieve Ruano in 1945. He served as Exalted Ruler at the Palo Alto chapter of the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks from 1955-1957. His love of the outdoors brought him to the Northstate where he became involved with the Willows Pheasant Association for 43 years.
Emmet settled in Chico in 1961. He delighted in hunting and fishing trips with friends, training his labs, feeding the ducks at Horseshoe Lake, outdoor barbeques and spending time with numerous relatives who came to visit.
Emmet is survived by his younger sister, Wilma Vaux of Brookdale, 11nieces and nephews, 21 great nieces and nephews and 24 great-great nieces and nephews. His wit, smile, smoked trout and penchant for practical jokes will be missed by all.
A memorial service will be held, Friday, April 2, 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Chico, 435 Chestnut Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Enloe Foundation to benefit the Enloe Rehabilitation Center, Notre Dame School Endowment (Chico), or the California Deer Association - Chico Chapter in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
