Helen Hunger

Helen Hope Hunger, 87, passed away on March 21, 2004. A private graveside service will follow on March 24, in Visalia. Her husband, Malcolm, preceded her in death.
Affectionately known as “Merry” by most, Helen was known by all for her kindness and sunny temperament. Her memory will always be cherished by friends and her surviving children: Greg Hunger from Scottsdale, Ariz., Marcia Olson from Paradise, and Barbara Van Baren from Hanford, Ca.; sister Audrey Clinehens from Fayetteville, Ark; and six grandchildren including Sy & Russell Olson from Paradise.
Helen’s amazing life spanned two World Wars, the Great Depression, as well as the onset of modern times. She was born a farm girl near Minneapolis, Kansas. She graduated from Kansas State University and became a registered Dietician in the early 1940’s. She worked as a Dietician at the Tulare District Hospital for twenty-three years, retiring in 1984. Her professional dietary opinion was much sought after, and she taught classes to aspiring dieticians and nurses at the College of the Sequoias in the 1970’s
She traveled extensively. Helen visited each state in the U.S. and also traveled to many countries around the world. She was a proud member of the Visalia Garden Club. She attended exercise classes at College of the Sequoias for many years.
Helen was a resident of the Atrium at Oak Knoll in Paradise for the last year of her life. There she made dear friends among the staff. Her family wishes to than these incredibly loving women who easily let her and other into their loving hearts.
She always espoused old-fashioned values of honesty, loyalty, and trust. When Helen lost her husband to Multiple Sclerosis in 1964, she was left to raise three small children alone. That had to be a daunting task, but all were raised with love and compassion and a sense of purpose. All children are now prospering. Goodbye, Mom. We miss you terribly.
Lloyd "Doc" Jones

LLOYD “DOC” JONES
Memorial services will be held for LLOYD “DOC” JONES, 86, of Chico 11:00a.m. Friday April 16th at Redeemer Lutheran Church. A memorial luncheon will follow the service. Lloyd died March 22, 2004 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born in Glenwood, Iowa and attended Hastings College for his B.A., and the University of Denver for his M.A. and Ph.D. In 1948, he came to Chico where he was a professor of Speech and Drama at CSU, Chico. Later he served as Chairman of that department. Because of his speaking abilities, Jones announced countless sporting events and was known by many as the “Voice of Chico State Athletics.” He retired from the university in 1985. He was also an active member of SIRS, and Kiwanis Club. He will also be remembered as the familiar voice at the Pioneer Days Parade and the Butte County Fair. Survivors include many nieces and nephews, including primary caregivers, David and Peg Bunger, Scott and Coni Smith, Janet Bunger, Dave and Sandy Stout; sister-in-law, Virginia Jones; a legion of former students and friends. His wife, Helen, preceded him in death in 2001. Memorial contributions may be made to Dr. Lloyd S. and Helen M. Jones Endowed Scholarship at Hastings College or the Wider Omaha Lutheran School Association in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Marilyn Lois Brown

MARILYN BROWN
A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Marilyn Lois Brown will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 4, 2004 at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. She died Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at a local hospital.
Marilyn was born August 13, 1932 to Edith & Lynn Bugher in Evansville, Indiana. She graduated from Reitz High School. In the late 1950’s she moved to Arizona and then relocated to California in 1964. For more than 40 years Marilyn worked as a medical secretary/office manager for various medical specialties. She excelled in her career and was highly respected. Marilyn had a great love of music. She played and taught piano, & was proficient in various other instruments. Marilyn enjoyed reading, musical performances and spending time with family. She was past President of Butte-Glenn Chapter of Medical Assistants and was a member of Science of Mind-Church of Religious Science.
Our beautiful mother was married for a time to Charles G. Brown. She is survived by her children, Charles Brown Jr., Cathy Panchesson, Rosemary Ellis, Marilyn Brown & Ollie White, nine grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son Christopher Duane Brown and a daughter Diana Gail Brannan. Marilyn lived a courageous life, was a strong and loving mother and will be greatly missed.

Horace Baxter

HORACE BAXTER
A Memorial Service for Horace Emmitt Baxter will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 28, 2004 at the Church of Christ. He died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at a local hospital.
He was born January 20, 1923 to John & Sarah Baxter in Lockney, Texas. Horace served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He moved to Plain View, Texas and attended college. August 26, 1946 he married Betty Sue Taylor in Clovis, New Mexico and they lived most of their life in California.
Horace was instrumental in the foundation of the Little League program in McKinleyville, California. He enjoyed fishing, sports, was an avid gardener, enjoyed spending time with his family. Horace was known for his smile and attended the Church of Christ his entire life.
He is survived by his wife, Sue, a son, Larry, a daughter, Connie Jaeger, two brothers, Clyde & Earnest, 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Chuck Witten
June 15, 1926 - March 26, 2004

CHARLES WITTEN
A memorial service will be held for, Charles “Chuck” Lincoln Witten, 77, of Chico, on Thursday, April 1, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Chico.
Chuck passed away on Friday, March 26, 2004 at his residence. He was born on June 15, 1926 in San Jose, California to Kenneth and Marvelle Witten.
Chuck attended school in San Jose and graduated from San Jose High School. In 1944 he enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corp; he served during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Chuck worked for Pac Bell for 15 years and then partnered with his father in a Shell Oil Distributorship.
He was a baseball coach for many years and was one of the founders of Oak Grove Little League. Chuck also was an advisor for the Bethel 129 drill team. He enjoyed hunting in Los Banos and at the family ranch on Mt. Hamilton.
Chuck and his family moved to Chico in 1976, he worked for Chico Honda and Chico Independent Honda as a Service Manager.
He retired in 1989 and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He joined the V.F.W. and became the Quartermaster for Post 1555 and also for the district.
On February 21, 1948 Chuck married Suzanne Moorhead in Reno, Nevada, she passed away on September 22, 1993.
Chuck is survived by two daughters, Sandee Babcock of Paradise and Cheryl Andrews of Chico; two sons, Kenneth Witten of Los Gatos and Michael Witten of Paradise; sister, Miriam Baker of San Jose; fifteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and numerous other family members.
A visitation service will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the V.F.W. Chico Post 1555 in care of the funeral home.
Shirley Cutts
March 19, 1940 - March 27, 2004

Shirley Dawson-Cutts, age 64, passed away on March 27, 2004 in Magalia, California. She was born March 19, 1940 in Plum City, Wisconsin where she was adopted by Marcus and Alma Gore. She lived here on the Ridge for the past 20 years. She loved to do crafts and to feed the humming birds with her grandchildren. She had a true love for her family. She will be very much missed by family and friends.
She is survived by Rodney Dawson, Elizabeth Ann Dawson, Daughter, of Medford, Oregon, Eva Marie & Ruben Escamilla daughter and son-in-law of Bieber, CA., Sherleen Helen & Daniel Cyphers daughter and son-in-law of Redding, CA, Cheryl Lee & Gary Benjamin daughter and son-in-law of Magalia, Evonne Lynn & Lee Collquitt daughter and son-in-law of Chico, sisters: Grace Paine, Gloria Yates and Dorothy Nelson; brothers: Westley Wheeler and Kenneth Oustad and 11 grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by sisters June Strout and Milly Kranz.
Memorial service held at Old Magalia Historical Church on Monday April 5, 2004 at 11:00AM. Urn placement at Skyway Memorial Park following the service. Pot Luck Reception at Magalia Community Church Hall. Newton-Bracewell Cremation and Funeral Service of Magalia handled arrangements.
