Jane McCullough Rutherford
Jane McCullough Rutherford passed away on April 7, 2004 in Chico, CA. Jane was born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 12, 1922, and spent her childhood in Norris, Tennessee. Jane’s parents instilled in all of their children a sense of right and wrong, an appreciation of nature, and respect for all people. Living one’s faith on a daily basis was always stressed.
Jane graduated from Norris High School in 1939. During her early school years in Norris, Tennessee she had the honor of meeting Eleanor Roosevelt and giving her a tour of the “experimental school” where Jane was a student. She attended Guilford Quaker College in North Carolina, graduating in 1943 with a B.S. in Biology. After graduating Jane worked as a nurse in the pre-employment department of the Manhattan Project in Oakridge, Tennessee. Following WWII, Jane taught chemistry at Tennessee Polytechnic Institute in Cookeville, Tennessee.
Jane married her high school sweetheart, William Edgar Rutherford (Bill), on September 10, 1944 in Norris, Tennessee. They were together for 49 years until Bill’s death in 1994, 2 weeks before their 50th anniversary.
Jane and Bill moved to Chico in 1956 when Bill began a teaching position at CSUC. During her time in Chico Jane’s involvement in the community was extensive. She served as a member and chairperson on the Butte County Economic Opportunity Council (now the Community Action Agency). She was also a member and President of the Family Service Association Board of Directors, member and chairperson of the City of Chico Social Services Commission, and member of the Butte County Mental Health Advisory Board.
Since Bill taught at the college, summers were free for travel. Jane and Bill would load the family in the car and travel across the country, stopping at every point of interest and instilling a love of travel and adventure in each of their three children.
Jane and Bill were proud of their Scot-Irish heritage and traveled to Scotland and England several times. One of the high points of their travels was a trip to England on the Concorde jet. These lengthy trips were a never-ending source of enjoyment to Jane and she loved discussing the villages, scenery and people they had visited. They also traveled extensively in the US, visiting friends and relatives in the South and the Southwest.
One of Jane’s special interests was genealogy and she and her husband spent much of their time during their travels doing research. Jane later used her research to write two extensive, detailed volumes of the family’s genealogy.
What she enjoyed most into her final years was doing special things for her children or grandchildren. You never knew what you were going to get for Christmas or a birthday, but many times it was an exciting river raft trip, a season pass at a ski area, or something else she thought you might want to try.
In the later part of her life Jane was courageous in the face of her disabilities, and continued to participate in life for as long as possible. Jane was an avid reader all of her life, and switched to books on tape after she lost her sight. She maintained an active interest in politics and current events. She lived in the same house in Chico for 49 years and found great comfort and enjoyment in the companionship of her neighbors.
Jane is survived by her two sisters, Mary Norton of Kingsport, Tennessee, Ann McCullough of Daytona Beach, Florida; a son Scott Rutherford and his wife, Bridget and their children, Ari and Emily of Forest Ranch, CA; son Timothy Rutherford and his wife, Cynthia, of Sacramento, CA.; a daughter, Jane Ann Rutherford, and her children, Aaron and Linnea Jefferson, of Mt. Shasta, CA; and a former son in law Tom Jefferson of Bandon, Oregon. Her family would like to think that Jane and Bill are together again, surrounded by dogwoods in bloom, and that they no longer need the Concorde to visit Scotland.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
Joseph Brostek

Joseph Brostek
A service will be held for Joseph John Brostek, 87, of Chico, on Monday, April 12, 2004, 12 noon at Chico Memorial Mausoleum. Joseph passed away on Wednesday, April 7th at his residence. He was born on July 5, 1916 in Solvay, New York to Anthony and Anna Brostek. Joseph joined the U.S. Army and served during WWII. On October 21, 1950 he married the love of his life, Helen Brostek in Chico. He was a wonderful husband and father. Joseph was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a life member of the Elks Lodge. He enjoyed collecting guns and coins. Joseph worked for forty years as a manager at Sterling Lumber until they closed, and then at Meeks Lumber until retiring in the early 1980’s. Joseph is survived by his daughter, Debbie Dowty of Chico; stepdaughter, Betty Tripplett of Reno, NV; stepson, Jack Terrell of Paradise; two brothers, Hank and William Brostek, both of New York; four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen K. Brostek; son, Joseph J. Brostek and daughter, Beverly Jo Brostek. Rev. Nell Hall

Rev. Nell F. Hall
Rev. Nell Funk Hall, age 95, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away on May 9th, 2004. Nell Hall was born April 21, 1909, in Rosthern, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Peter P. and Catherine Reimer Funk. After the start of World War I, her family moved to Wolf Point, Montana. She was one of seven children, and is survived by two sisters. Directly after graduation from high school, she taught at the Benrud School for two years, teaching all eight grades in a one-room setting. Nell then studied one year in Winnipeg, Canada, at the Canadian Pentecostal Bible College and a second year at Glad Tidings Bible Institute in San Francisco graduating in 1931. Glad Tidings is now Bethany College in Santa Cruz, California. Preparing for missionary service with the Assemblies of God, Nell spent five years in ministry in Idaho and Montana. She and a coworker started Assemblies of God churches in Butte and Deer Lodge, Montana, (1932,1933) and Pocatello, Idaho (1934). She received her ordination credentials in 1933. She met her husband, A. Walker Hall of Chula Vista, California while building the church in Deer Lodge, Montana. They were married June 1936 and sailed for China on Christmas Day, 1936. The first two years were spent learning the Cantonese language. Two sons were born to them in China. On 12/8/41 when the second son was six-weeks old, Hong Kong was overrun by the Japanese army and they were interned in Stanley Camp as prisoners of war. Six months later they were repatriated, the first prisoner of war exchange of its kind during wartime. Due to political unrest they ministered to Chinese peoples in other areas of the world. This included two terms in Havana, Cuba, one in Canton, China, one in the Territory of the Hawaiian Islands. Two more children were born during these terms. The final overseas assignment for Nell and her husband was to Hong Kong where they started and operated Wa Wai kindergarten schools and churches until retiring in 1980. In 40 years that organization has provided a Biblically based education for thousands of children, leading to the establishment of thriving Wa Wai Assemblies of God churches. The final ten years of semi-retirement were spent working with the Asian immigrants in Modesto and Sacramento ending in 1990, with the death of Nell's husband. They had been married for fifty-four years and had spent the entire time in active ministerial work. Surviving are three sons, Arlin (A. W.) of Fort Worth, TX., Cecil of Kilauea, HI. and Larry of Springfield, MO., a daughter, Juanelle Stracner of Chico, CA., and their spouses, five granddaughters, Heidi Jumper of Little Rock, AR., Amy Nell (Zoi) Hall, of Oakland, CA., Lori Harvey of Pensacola, FL., Hillary Hall of Chico, CA., and Heather Hall of Fort Worth, TX., and their spouses. She had one great-granddaughter, Morganne Jumper of Little Rock. A memorial service will be held May 27th, at 6:00 p.m. at First Assembly of God, 1147 Arbutus Ave, Chico. Burial will be in the Chico Cemetery, with the kind help of the Newton Bracewell Funeral Home. She was a woman of great strength, courage, and dedication. She had one desire in life; to live and act in a way pleasing to her Maker. Robert Nagy

ROBERT “Bob” NAGY
Private Family Services are planned for Robert “Bob” John Nagy. He died at the age of 82 in Chico, California on Friday, May 14, 2004. Bob was born August 11, 1921 in San Francisco, California where he was also raised and educated. He served in the U. S. Army Air Force as a pilot in the pacific. He returned to the Bay area and married Marion Martha Bell. Bob worked as a linoleum and carpet installer for over 25 years. Bob was a car buff and enjoyed anything having to do with pilots. He was a member of the VFW. His wife proceeded in death on February 14, 2000. He moved to Chico on May 5, 2004 to be near family. He is survived by family members, Royal & Anetta “Ann” Doty, Pat & Mike Hart and children, Michael, Eric & Heidi Hart Haiselmaier, Lew & Barbara Doty, Jim & Laurel Doty and family, Lisa Doty Webber and family, Tessa Doty and seven great nieces and nephews. Inurnment will be at Chico Memorial Mausoleum. Memorial Donations may be made to Bidwell Memorial Presbyterian Church in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Darlle Johns

DARLLE JOHNS Graveside services will be held for W. Darlle Johns, 79, of Chico 2:00p.m. Saturday at Glen Oaks Memorial Park. He died Tuesday May 18, 2004 in Chico. Darlle was born February 16, 1925 in Homestead, Oregon to Elmer and Beulah Johns.
He was raised and educated in Redmond, Oregon. During WWII he served aboard the USS Savo Island.
On January 22, 1945 he married his high school sweetheart, Helen Henry.
The couple lived in Oregon and Southern California before settling in Chico in 1961.
Darlle worked in retail lumber and building supplies for many years.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening, spending time with his wife and friends in their motor home and was a member of the Elks R.V. Club. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen of Chico; a son and his wife, Rick and Janelle Johns; 2 daughters, Jani and her husband David Cobbs of Sacramento and Gail Johns of San Diego; a sister DeFreise Ritchey of Monmouth, Oregon; 5 grandchildren, Brian Baty, Kevin and his wife Keri Johns, Scott Baty, Lisa Johns, Kelce Cobbs and 4 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Hazel Jefferies

Hazel Jefferies
A service will be held for Hazel Maurine Jefferies, 89, of Chico on Monday, May 24, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Hazel passed away on May 19, 2004 at a local care facility.
She was born on October 26, 1914 in Barnett, Missouri to John and Bertie McCoy.
Her family moved to California in 1918. Hazel wed Donald Jefferies on September 25, 1937 in Reno, Nevada.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing and square dancing. She loved spending time with her family; especially her granddaughters.
Hazel is survived by her son, Douglas Jefferies of Chico; her daughter, Janice Plotts and her husband, Craig of Chico; and her beloved granddaughters, Keri, Katie and Megan Plotts all of Chico. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Jefferies in 1996, and by her grandson, Jeffrey Plotts in 1985.
A visitation service will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2004 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
