ALICE VIRGINIA WILLIAMS
Alice’s homegoing was on Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at the age of 83. Her three daughters were at her side at the time of her passing. Alice was born in Lodi, California, on October 30, 1920, and moved to Chico in 1954 with her husband, Arvile (Willie), and three daughters, K.G., Judy, and Connie.
Following her high school graduation in Lodi, Alice attended Business School in Stockton. While in Lodi, she enjoyed sports and was a pitcher for the Lodi Flames, a semi-pro softball team. She started piano lessons at age 6 and by 14 was one of the organists at Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church. Her gift of playing piano and organ continued throughout her life. After moving to Chico, she began a 30-year ministry as organist for the Chico Evangelical Free Church. Even after her retirement, Alice continued to bring enjoyment to family and friends with her musical talent on the piano. She had a 27-year career as a cashier in the Business Affairs Office at California State University, Chico. Early on in her career at Chico State, she was the Veterans Clerk helping many Korean War veterans who were returning home to continue their college education. .
Alice enjoyed gardening, ceramics, embroidery, baking pies for family gatherings, golfing, and vacationing in Maui. She had a wonderful 54-year marriage to Arvile Williams, who preceded her in his homegoing December 2000. They loved spending time with their daughters and their families, attending many sporting and school events of their grandchildren.
Family survivors include three daughters, K.G. Sheley and husband, Chuck; Connie Woolston and husband, Steve; and Judy Berry. Grandchildren are Scott Sheley and his wife, Patricia; Greg Sheley and his wife, Sharrie; Tracey Butcher and her husband, Michael; Brenda Liles and her husband, Philip; Amy Woolston, Kimberly Berry, Christopher Berry, and eight great-grandchildren, Leah, Sarah, Jesse, Kerissa, Alexa, Kaylin, Breah, and Alexander. Also surviving is Alice’s brother, Leonard Frey. Her sister, Jean Parsons, preceded her in death.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, May 23, 2004 at 1:30 pm at the Chico Evangelical Free Church, 1193 Filbert Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice’s memory may be made to the Peg Taylor Center or the Chico Evangelical Free Church in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.

Private Family Services are planned at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, Los Angeles, California for Esther Glusman. She died Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at her residence. Esther was born May 28, 1920 in Cleveland, Ohio. At a very young age her family moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she was raised and educated. Esther graduated from Westchester State Teachers College, Philadelphia, PA. She moved to Southern California and taught for many years in the Beverly Hills School District. She was a member of the California Teachers Association. Esther moved to Chico in 1996, following the death of her husband Leonard. She is survived by three sons, Paul, Robert & Michael and five grandchildren, Noah, Ellie, Sam, Karina and Gaia. Memorial Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Joyce Powell

Family services to be held at a later date for, Joyce Annette Powell, 62, of Oroville, who passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2004 at Oroville Hospital. Joyce was born on January 4, 1942 in Orange County, California to Clifton and Mabel Watkins. On October 28, 1983 Joyce married Harry Powell. Joyce loved spending time with her grandkids who she adored. She is survived by her beloved family; husband, Harry Powell of Oroville; son, David Jensen of Texas; daughter, Lisa Seiver of Ria Linda, CA; son, Jimmy Yount, Jr. of Oroville; sister, Beverly Clark of Oroville; brother, Dwayne Watkins of Oroville; stepdaughter, Kristine Christman of Oroville, stepson, Harry Powell, Jr. of Utah, stepdaughter, Cynthia Powell of Nevada; fifteen grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Arrangements are under the direction of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Wanda Mae White

Wanda Mae White passed away on May 21, 2004 at the age of 73, after a lengthy illness. She was born to Benjamin and Dinah Nelson in Glen Hedrick, West Virginia, on August 27, 1930.
Wanda worked for four years at the A&P grocery store in Ashland, Kentucky. It was there that she met her husband, Burl White. The two were wed on May 29, 1954. Soon after, they moved to Southern California where they lived for nine years. In 1964 they moved to Paradise.
Some of the activities Wanda enjoyed with her family were “rock hounding,” lapidary work, digging for old bottles, camping and road trips.
At eight years of age she learned how to cook, standing on a step stool to see over the cook stove. Cooking has been one of her favorite hobbies ever since, she even called it her “therapy.” On many occasions she would prepare delicious meals for the sick, the elderly, friends and family.
Wanda loved spending time on Oroville Lake, and she really enjoyed fishing. The biggest fish she caught was a forty-two pound salmon, out of the Feather River. Not only did she like to catch fish, she was famous for her fried fish.
Wanda was proud to be one of Jehovah’s Witnesses for thirty years. She was delighted to share Bible truths with others, especially the promises regarding God’s Kingdom. She looked forward to the time when “wickedness would be no more, and the righteous will enjoy abundant peace on the earth forever” Psalms 37:10-11, 29; Isaiah 33:24; Revelation 21:3, 4.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Burl of fifty years; son, Mike and his companion, Heather; daughter, Colleen Alton and her husband, John; granddaughters, Emily, Sarah and Hannah, all of Paradise; siblings, Sadie Schrewsbury of West Virginia, Loney Neely of Oroville, and Melvin Nelson of West Virginia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. White was preceded in death by siblings, Leo, Azel, Frank and Lawrence Nelson as well as Sylvia Redden.
Wanda was dearly loved, and will be sorely missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 29, at 1;30 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 7874 Skyway. Memorial contributions may be made in her behalf to the Worldwide Work of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Susan Jones

Susan Guthrie Jones
A memorial service will be held for Susan Guthrie Jones, 69, of Chico, on Thursday, May 27, 2004, 11:00 a.m at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. She passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, May 22, 2004. Susan was born August 19, 1934 in Paso Robles, CA to David and Alma Guthrie. She was raised in Williams, CA and attended grammar school there. Susan moved to Chico with her family in 1949 and graduated from Chico High School in 1952. After graduating from high school she married Jimmie Jones of Chico and spent all of her married life as a military wife. During this time she raised three sons, while her husband was oversea’s on three different isolated tours of duty with the Army. Susan and her two oldest sons also accompanied her husband worldwide and resided for six years in Japan and three years in Germany. In 1976, after Susan’s husband retired from the Army, they returned to Chico. Susan was a stay at home mom, raising three sons. She attended Butte Community College, taking sewing and computer classes. Susan was employed at La Bella Rosa, Posey Fair, and K-mart all in Chico. Susan was active in P.E.O. chapter DS., for many years, and was a past president. Susan’s hobbies included computers, photography, gardening, sewing, camping, and traveling. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jimmie Jones; three sons, Dave Jones of Forest Ranch, Bill Jones of Chico, and Michael Jones of Tehama County; a brother, James Guthrie of Chico; three grandsons; one granddaughter; one step-grandson and one step-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association or to the American Cancer Society in care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home who are handling the arrangements.
Sherry Ann Groves-Klemin

Sherry Ann Groves-“Klemin”
Sherry Ann Groves was born on September 30,1953 in Royal Oak, Michigan to James and Jackie Hodges. In 1960 her family moved to Southern California. She moved to Beautiful Stirling City in August of 1982, where she raised her two children, Stephen and Jennifer Napoli. She loved the mountains and outdoor life. She enjoyed and loved all animals, especially her own dogs, (Whiz and Ayla), horse (Ramie), emu (Chicken Rea) and pigs.
Sherry touched everyone’s hearts and lives; and encouraged all to “live life to the fullest and be happy.” In 1992 after a great deal of hard work, she received her associates’ degree in Criminal Science from Butte College. Her family was very proud of her!
Sherry leaves behind the love of her life, Bill Klemin (Lafe) of Stirling City: son Steve Napoli and wife Mariza of Valencia; daughter, Jennifer Napoli-Branson and husband Matt of Stirling city; sister Chris Siebuhr and husband Steve of Canbria; nephews, Paul and Zachary of Tulane; grandchildren, Alyssa (11), Vanessa (6), Anthony (3), Christian (8), Ryan and Trent (3). Along with her family, Sherry leaves behind many Fairy God children and friends. Sherry’s Mother and Father, Jackie and James Richard Hodges preceded her in death.
Viewing will be held on Friday, May 28, 2004 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Stirling City Assembly of God, followed by Funeral Service at 2:00 p.m. A potluck celebrating her life will be held at the Stirling City Brown Hall following the services.
Robert Swift

A funeral mass will be held for, Robert Dean Swift, 85, of Chico, on Friday, June 4, 2004, 11:30 a.m. at Our Divine Savior Catholic Church, the rosary will be recited on Thursday, June 3rd, 6:00 p.m. at Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. Robert passed away on Friday, May 28, 2004 at his residence. He was born on July 11, 1918 in Oakland, California to Alfred and Grace Swift. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. On April 22, 1944 he married Marjorie A. Patrick in Oakland, she passed away on November 1, 2000. Together they owned and operated Valley Television in Los Gatos, California, from 1952 until 1967. Robert loved trout fishing and hiking in the mountains. He tied his own flies and was a past member of the Chico Fly Fishing Club. He was also a Civil War enthusiast. Robert is survived by his daughter, Patricia “Patsy” Swift of Chico; two brothers, Jack and his wife June of Dallas, Texas and Eugene and his wife Bobbie of Walnut Creek, California; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Eleanor Hawks of Chico; and many other beloved members of his extended family, including Crunkie the cockatiel.
