Phillis Simonds Cooke
September 05, 1937 - November 04, 2004
Birthplace: Providence, Rhode Island
Resided In: Chico, California
Phillis Cooke, a mother, grandmother and lifelong adventurer, died in her home in Chico, California, on November 4. She was 67 years old.
Born at the Lying-In Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, to Godfrey Baldwin Simonds and Mary Carolyn Vail Simonds, Phillis had a lively spirit from a young age. When she was a child, her family kept unusual pets: two skunks, baby foxes, and a flying squirrel. A favorite photograph from the time shows her leaning on a fishing pole, looking devilish and beautiful.
As a young teen, her parents sent her by train (with a chaperone) to live on a dude ranch in Arizona. There she bonded with a horse named Twinkletoes. As Phillis recalled the story in later years, the owners of the ranch were so impressed by the bond between horse and child that they wanted to ship the steed back east. Phillis's parents declined the offer.
Phillis went to Wheeler School in Providence, Rhode Island, Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut, and Garland Junior College in Boston, Massachusetts.
Her father died in 1952, when she was 15. Nearly five years later, she married Paul Ives Bartholet, and bore three children: Jeffrey Ives in 1958, Frederick Ives in 1961, and Carolyn Vail in 1964.
The Bartholets moved several times, living at various periods in New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont and  Washington, D.C.. The family spent summers in Stonington, Connecticut.
For many years, Phillis presided over girl-scout meetings and horse-riding lessons, participated in PTA functions, healed bruised knees and wounded egos, cleaned up messes, planted gardens, and held her family together. Until she felt she couldn't anymore. She divorced in 1983, and moved to Chico, California.
In 1991, Phillis married James Cooke. Together they traveled the world. They walked the Great Wall of China, snorkled off the Great Barrier Reef, sailed fellucas on the Nile. They watched lions mate on the plains of Africa. On her last trip, in the days before her death, she flew in a harness through the canopy of a forest in Costa Rica.
From each faraway place, she sent postcards to her grandchildren describing wonders. Among her favorite adjectives were "glorious" and "gorgeous." For verbs, she favored "adore" and "love."
Phillis could never refuse a child hawker with trinkets to sell. She returned from her trips with handmade dolls and stale cocoa, carved compasses, bamboo boxes and wooden spoons - from Havana and Luxor, Delhi and Angkor Wat. She gave these to her children and grandchildren. She also sent clothes, books and other necessities to people she had met in distant lands. She helped two Kenyan men build homes for their families; David Okee, a Nairobi gardener, named a daughter after her.
On holidays, Phillis sent cards, sweets and gifts to all of her grandchildren. For Halloween, she sent festoons of ghosts and bats. On Valentine's Day, candy hearts arrived. Chocolate eggs and bunnies marked Easter. She was fond of holiday cards that make music when you open them.
Phillis and her sister Linda had a secret password they whispered to each other as children, and continued using in later years: "Ushi Bushi chocolate girl, maybe yes and maybe no, look at those mouths they see." Nobody else understood what they were talking about, which is why they loved it.
Phillis is survived by her three children, four grandchildren--Alexandra, Jack, Stella and Leila--and by two sisters, Carla Simonds Warren and Linda Vail Simonds.
A memorial service will be held at the Mystic Yachting Center in Mystic, Connecticut, at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 4. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the World Wildlife Fund in  Washington D.C., www.worldwildlifefund.org
