Mr. Yenna was born May 4, 1958, in Bangor, Maine, and moved to Elk Grove in 1968 with his family. Here he was known as the "Bird Man of Elk Grove" because of his interest in anything with feathers. He maintained a hospital for sick and injured birds which he found, or friends found, and when they were restored to health, he set them free. His main interest was falconry, and a feature article in the Elk Grove Citizen in 1970 told about his training a sparrow hawk in this medieval sport.
Following graduation from Elk Grove High School, Mr. Yenna attended to University of Utah. There he worked on the Jarvik heart and was recruited to go to Minnesota for further research. While there, he earned his R.N. degree from the University of Minnesota.
He moved back to Utah and for the past 13 years has worked at the University of Utah hospital.
"Charlie had such an interest in people," said his mother. "As a nurse, he would quiz his patients about their whole lives so his patients were people to him, not just a disease.
"He listened to a different drummer all his life."
He married Mary Beth Pratt Aug. 23, 1980, in Salt Lake City. She survives him as do their children, Zachary and Lewis, and his parents, Irene and Dan Yenna of Elk Grove.
