Robert Crandall
Robert L. Crandall, a former resident of the Elk Grove area, died in Sacramento May 26, 2007 at the age of 75.
Mr. Crandall lived in this area from 1956 to 1987 and worked as an electronic engineer for Pacific Telephone Co. He was a charter member of Elk Grove Post 2073, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a member of the Telephone Pioneers and the Independent Order of Foresters of Sacramento.
Following retirement, he and his wife Janis moved to Klamath, where they have lived for the past 20 years.
He was born in Orfina, Nebraska, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1956.
Mr. Crandall was preceded in death by his brother Jerry Crandall and wife Grace.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Janis J. Crandall of Klamath; children Kim L. Crandall and wife Sandra of Elk Grove, Paul Crandall and wife Susan of Klamath, and Shawn Crandall of Sacramento; grandchildren Cory Crandall and wife Stacey of Colorado, Tara Souza and husband Matt of Florin, Melissa Crandall of Rancho Cucamonga, and Amanda Crandall of Pollock Pines; and great-grandchildren Hailee, Danny, Kiara, Landen and Kaylan.
Mr. Crandall was the brother of Brayton Crandall Jr. and wife Pat of Alaska, Frances Beckman and Normajean Dietz of Chico, Ruth Rogers of Oroville, Patty Weston and husband Dan of Orland, and Beverly Long and husband Tommy of Hiouchi. He also leaves numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Cremation is private, with a celebration of his life to take place at a later date.

Robert Christie
Robert R. Christie of Elk Grove died at his home June 1, 2007 at the age of 74.
Mr. Christie was born April 28, 1933 in San Francisco. He worked for Pacific Gas & Electric for 35 years before retiring.
He is survived by his wife Catherine Christie of Elk Grove; children Robert Christie and wife Diane of Glendale, Ariz. and Michael Christie and wife Monica of Auburn; stepchildren Rebecca Douglas and husband William and Cynthia Batchelor all of Carmichael and Michael Batchelor and wife Christine of Prunedale; and several grandchildren.
Mr. Christie was the brother of Ken Christie and Peter Herzog, of Shady Cove, Ore.
“Robert will be remembered for his quick wit, unconditional love, positive attitude and zest for life,” said Catherine Christie.
Services were private.
Audrey Scarlett
Audrey (Aunt Pat) Scarlett, a resident of the south Sacramento area for the past 20 years, died June 5, 2007, the last of seven children.
A native of Omaha, Neb., she was 82 at the time of her death.
Mrs. Scarlett is survived by her daughter Patricia McCoskey of Sacramento; grandchildren Tracy, Michelle, Derrick and Jason; 13 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held June 8 at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary. Cremation was private.
Hans Koller
Memorial services will take place Saturday for Hans Koller, a 37-year resident of Wilton, who died Jan. 12, 2003.
Mr. Koller, 75, was a native of Switzerland who came to this country in 1956. He was a carpenter by trade.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth, and is survived by his son, Daniel Koller and wife Wanda of Citrus Heights.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. at Wilton Bible Church, 9697 Dillard Road. Interment is private. Arrangements are by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.
Viola Campbell
A Mass of Christian burial will take place today (Wednesday) for Viola Mildred (Vi) Campbell, a 13-year resident of Elk Grove who died June 7, 2003. Mrs. Campbell, 61, was a native of Canada.
She is survived by her husband of 28 years, John Campbell of Elk Grove; her children, Jim Barker of Grass Valley, Doug Barker and Shawnn Paulsen of Sacramento, Kim Smith of Elk Grove and Kathryn Campbell of San Diego; her stepchildren, Shawn Crews of Roseville and Shannon Crews of Redding; and her mother-in-law Kathryn Campbell of Redding.
Mrs. Campbell was the sister of Larry Locken of Placerville and Sheila Dockery of Sacramento. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mass will begin at 10 a.m. today in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road, followed by interment in Elk Grove District Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to UCSF Foundation, P.O. Box 0248, c/o Sue Meerrilles, Director, 44 Montgomery, Ste. 2200, San Francisco, CA 94104.

Stephen Hagen
Stephen Douglas Hagen, a lifelong resident of Elk Grove, died June 3, 2003 at the age of 45.
"He was a truly passionate baseball fan all his life," said his family, adding that the left-handed pitcher played ball from Little League on through Elk Grove High School, where he graduated in 1976.
At Elk Grove, he established a 9-in-1 record with a .86 earned run average while striking out 111 in 73 innings.
Mr. Hagen was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting and fishing. He was also a warehouseman for Consolidated Freightway.
"He will be missed by all of us as well as his many friends," said his family.
Mr. Hagen was preceded in death by his father, William F. Hagen.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Hagen of Wilton; his brothers, Patrick Hagen also of Wilton and Jeffrey Hagen of Elk Grove; and his sister, Laura De Jesus and husband Gary of Valley Springs.
Services are private with interment in St. Mary's Cemetery. Remembrances may be made to Visions, 425 Pine St., Galt, CA 95632.

Betty Romanko
Memorial services for Betty C. Romanko of Elk Grove will be held Saturday, June 14. Mrs. Romanko died May 28, 2003 at the age of 67.
A native of Canada, she resided in Elk Grove for the past three years.
She was a homemaker whose specialty was gourmet cooking, said her family. She was also very fond of animals, and at the time of her death owned five cats.
Mrs. Romanko is survived by her husband of 41 years, Oliver Romanko of Elk Grove; her children, Kathy Romanko-Spohr and husband Paul also of Elk Grove, and Ann M. Countryman and husband Brian of Tucson, Ariz.; and her grandchildren, Jared Spohr of Elk Grove and Brandon Countryman of Tucson.
She was the daughter of Clara Koch of Elk Grove.
Saturday's services will begin at 11 a.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove. Interment is private.
Frank Azvedo
Frank Dale Azvedo, who was the prime mover behind Elk Grove’s hosting a national women’s softball team tournament, died Dec. 13, 2006 at his home in Elk Grove. He was 75.
Funeral services are today (Dec. 20) at 11 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8697 Elk Grove Blvd.
As president of the Elk Grove Jaycees he coached Pop Warner and in 1969 started a women’s softball team. They won all their games in California but lost in the nationals. So Mr. Azvedo vowed to have one of the best teams in the nation, and that Elk Grove would host a national tournament. After many years of struggle he saw his dream come true in 1976, and in 1988 was inducted into the Greater Sacramento Softball Association Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport.
Mr. Azvedo was born Aug. 30, 1931 in San Bernardino and grew up there, graduating from Chula Vista High School. He took evening classes in electronics and enlisted in the U.S. Army, going to Korea where he was part of the Inchon invasion. He also served in Tokyo in a special service group and was a military attaché during the Vietnam War.
At the time of his discharge he held the rank of first sergeant, and served in the California Army National Guard for several years.
Mr. Azvedo worked as an electrician and foreman in southern California, but soon decided to move his family to Sacramento. He, his first wife Joan and children settled in Wilton, and in 1969 Mr. Azvedo and Elder Heinle started a small electric business out of Heinle’s garage, calling it Four Star Electric. He bought out Heinle and moved the business to 24th Street in Sacramento.
In 1970, divorced from his first wife, he married Ingrid Eisenbeisz and they moved to Elk Grove.
Both Frank and Ingrid were involved in politics at many levels, and attended presidential and gubernatorial inaugurations from Washington to Sacramento; from Ronald Reagan in 1980 to Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003. For many years the couple, with the help of the Portuguese community, hosted the famous Azvedo steak and oyster feeds from 1980 to 2001, featuring some top names in politics and show business.
Mr. Azvedo served as a delegate and honorary delegate including personnel security in Detroit, Dallas and New Orleans. Gov. George Deukmejian appointed him to the 52nd District Agricultural Association, and he also was appointed to the California Boxing Commission.
He was known for his generosity in donating service and material to special projects, including the S.E.S. Hall, Elk Grove High School snack bar, Senior Center of Elk Grove and the war memorial at the State Capitol Park.
Mining, hunting and fishing were some of his hobbies as well as piloting his own plane until diabetes grounded him. He was an inventor, and on Dec. 26, 1989 was granted a patent for an Aircraft Theft Guard, a device that sold in the United States and some foreign countries.
Mr. Azvedo is survived by his wife of 36 years, Ingrid of Elk Grove; children Glenn Azvedo and wife Debbie, Vicky Hoyt and husband Steve, Craig Azvedo and wife Sheila, Robert Eisenbeisz and wife Tori, and Tim Eisenbeisz; grandchildren Jaimie, Kristen, Brandon, Randy, Mindy, Dustin, Stephen, Bryce, Lynsey, Kelsey, Bryan, Julie and Victoria; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of Pat Orne, Joy Ater and Sharon White.
Interment in Pleasant Grove Cemetery
