Harlan Wayne
Harlan Wesley Wayne, a resident of Elk Grove for the past six years, died Dec. 20, 2006 at the age of 85.
Mr. Wayne was born April 17, 1921 in Chicago and grew up in that city, spending much time in the Museum of Art and various libraries, giving him a thirst for education.
After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he finished his first degree at the University of the Pacific in Stockton where he met his future wife, Nancy Manor. He earned his master’s degree in psychology and also received his elementary and secondary teaching credentials.
Mr. Wayne taught gifted, handicapped, delinquent and mainstream students in the Roseville, Cupertino, Delano and Corcoran schools.
While he taught he continued his education, earning credentials in school psychology, school administration, a master’s in management, Associate Degree in Legal Assisting, and completed law school.
His professional skills included legal research, educational and instructional methods, educational social research, education guidance methods and labor relations research. He also obtained his certificate in conflict resolution in San Luis Obispo County and was a notary.
“His greatest joy was being a daddy,” said his daughter. “But he loved advocating for underprivileged populations and the underserved regardless of social or economic status.”
Mr. Wayne is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters Kathy Edwards and husband Tim, Julie  Schmidt and husband John and Laurie Wayne; and grandson Paul Williams.
Memorial services are today, Dec. 20, at The Gospel Lighthouse, Arroyo Grande, beginning with a fellowship meal at 6 p.m. followed by a remembrance service at 7 p.m.

Thomas York
U.S. Air Force retired Senior Master Sgt. Thomas E. York, known in Elk Grove for his support of his grandchildren in their sports, died Jan. 19, 2007 at the age of 74.
Sgt. York was born Aug. 3, 1932 in New London, Conn. He served in the Air Force for 27 years, including a tour in Thailand during the Vietnam War. In civilian life he worked at McClellan Air Force Base in the F117 program from the early 1980s until retirement in the late 1990s.
He spent many hours attending his grandchildren’s soccer games and more recently Sheldon Husky football games.
Sgt. York is survived by his wife of 51 years, Alice York of Rocklin; children Diane Houlton and husband Mike of Rocklin, Lisa York of Sacramento and Jeff York and wife Sherri of Elk Grove; grandchildren Alex and Jackie Houlton of Rocklin, Matt and Meghan Hoey of Sacramento and Kyle, Thomas and Cortney York of Elk Grove.
A funeral Mass was held Thursday in Rocklin followed by interment at the National Veterans Cemetery in Dixon.

Zeny Villadelgado
Funeral services will take place Monday for Zeny Villadelgado of Elk Grove, who died Jan. 5, 2003, in the UC Davis Medical Center. She was 48.
Mrs. Villadelgado was born Feb. 3, 1954, in Pasay City, the Philippines. She served as eucharistic minister at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in south Sacramento, and, said her husband, was dedicated to her family.
She is survived by her husband, Rudy, and her daughter, Stephanie, both of Elk Grove; and her son and daughter-in-law, David and Paula Villadelgado of Walnut Creek.
Visitation is Saturday from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 9 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 4 p.m., at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd.
The funeral liturgy will be Monday beginning at 10 a.m. in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 7584 Center Parkway, Sacramento. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Louis Creekmore
Louis E. Creekmore, a six-year resident of the Sacramento area, died Jan. 1, 2003, at the age of 79. He was a native of  Oklahoma.
Mr. Creekmore was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen, and his daughter, Barbara Walker.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Creekmore of Sacramento; his children, Rose Kurtz and husband Brian of Citrus Heights and Robert Creekmore and wife Brenda of Bakersfield; 21 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Creekmore was the brother of Lucille Richmond, Barry and Daniel Creekmore, all of Oakdale.
Services took place Saturday in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, Elk Grove. Interment was in Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson.

Joyce Mulville
Funeral services will be Saturday for Joyce M. Mulville, who died Dec. 31, 2002, at the age of 75.
Mrs. Mulville was a member of Celebration Life Ministries in Elk Grove and attended Bible study at First Baptist Church of Elk Grove. She was also a longtime member of Calvary Temple in Concord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald P. Mulville; and her brothers, Arnold, Addison and Eugene Stock.
Mrs. Mulville is survived by her daughters, Vicki Hobbs and husband Herbert of Elk Grove and Barbara Schuler and husband Gene of Canton, Mich; her stepchildren, Geraldine Sullivan and husband Brian, Carolyn Sandoval and husband Hugo, and Marlene  White and husband Chris; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was the sister of Helen Foglia, Dorothy Bergrud and LaVerne Mieska.
Visitation is today from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and services begin Saturday at 10 a.m., all at South East Lawn Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. in Golden Gate National Cemetery, 1300 Sheath Lane, San Bruno,  Calif.
Remembrances may be made to St. John’s Shelter for Women and Children, P.O. Box 188526, Sacramento, CA 95818.

Ruth Hobbs
Ruth Chavez Hobbs, mother of Elk Grove Mayor Sophia Scherman, died May 31, 2004 in St. George, Utah.
Mrs. Hobbs was born April 18, 1917 in Mexico, one of 12 children of Encarnacion and Maria Chavez. She became a citizen of the United States in 1954.
Mrs. Hobbs was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and, with her husband Donald, had been on four missions for the church. She especially enjoyed working in the various temples assisting brides-to-be, and working with Latino members. She also taught Spanish in the temples of  Washington, D.C., Dallas and Utah while on her missions.
"She was a role model for all of our families to follow," said her daughter. "She taught us the value of working hard to achieve our goals and not to give up during hard times. And always our conversations ended with my asking 'La Mano Mama?' Her reply always was, 'Que Dios La Bendiga, Meja,' (May God Bless You, My Daughter)."
Mrs. Hobbs was preceded in death by her son, Albert Gonzales, her stepson, Bob Hobbs and her grandchildren, Christina Scherman and Jeffrey Brown.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Hobbs of St. George; her daughter, Sophia Scherman and husband Leland of Elk Grove; her son, Louie and daughter-in-law Pearla of Montana; her stepson, Michael Hobbs of St. George; and more than 50 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services took place last weekend in Utah.

Elizabeth Traina
Elizabeth (Betty) Stetson Selzle Traina, a former resident of Elk Grove, died June 1, 2004 at the age of 79.
Mrs. Traina was born Sept. 24, 1924 in Napa, but grew up and lived in the Elk Grove area for much of her life, graduating from Elk Grove High School.
She was married to Henry Selzle until his death in 1962, and then married Richard Traina in 1963. The couple divorced in 1972.
Mrs. Traina then moved to Creekside Village where she met Bud Lohman. The couple started a kitchen band called the Creekside Critters and performed in many parades and in homes for the elderly and convalescent hospitals. "Betty and Bud were a great team," said her family.
She is survived by her children, Ann Teter of Shingle Springs, Patty Kingery of Gardena and Robert Selzle of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
No services were held at her request.

Ronald Russell
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 1 for Ronald (Papa Ron) Russell, a 34-year resident of Elk Grove who died May 22, 2007 at the age of 68.
Mr. Russell was known as “Papa Ron” at the Fog Willow Pumpkin and Science Farm in Wilton where he worked for the last three years, giving hay rides to scores of children and teaching science classes.
He was born in Santa Cruz Sept. 21, 1938 and moved with his family to Sacramento in the early ‘40s. He was a Sacramento city firefighter for 35 years and a volunteer with the Elk Grove Fire Department for 15 years.
Following retirement he worked briefly at Wal-Mart before going to Fog Willow Farm.
Mr. Russell is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sharon Russell of Elk Grove; children Jeffrey Russell of Sacramento and Cheryl Russell of Elk Grove; and grandchildren Zachary and Ashley Russell also of Elk Grove.
He was the brother of Delbert and Paul Russell and Margaret Phillips all of Sacramento, Norma Bustos of Fair Oaks, Daryl Russell of Arizona and Ken Russell of Elk Grove.
Friday’s services will begin at 3 p.m. at Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd.
A trust account for his grandchildren has been set up at Stockmans Bank, and remembrances may be made to Account No. 103047833, c/o Stockmans Bank, 9340 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove, CA 95624.
