Sam Bacchini
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, July 18 for Sam John Bacchini Sr. who died in Folsom July 12, 2003. The lifelong resident of the Sacramento area was 79.
Mr. Bacchini was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years Elvira "Boots" Bacchini; his son Ralph Bacchini; and two brothers, Edward "Dino" Bacchini and Luigi "Louie" Bacchini.
He is survived by his children, James Bacchini and wife Elizabeth and Sam Bacchini Jr. of Sacramento, Lisa Bacchini and husband Larry of Folsom, and Renee Bacchini and husband Martin of San Francisco; and his grandchildren, Marisa, Nicolas, Jennifer, Jeremy, Ryan, Brandon, Cristiano and Zoe.
Mr. Bacchini was the brother of Mafalda Bacchini of Elk Grove.
Visitation is today (Wednesday) from 5 to 8 p.m. and Thursday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with recitation of the rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd.
Friday's Mass begins at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Catholic Church, 8720 Florin Road. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

William Stenson
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 18 for retired Air Force Reserve Colonel William A. Stenson of Elk Grove who died July 12, 2003.
Mr. Stenson was born Oct. 3, 1919 near Colome, S.D. where he grew up. He played football for both his high school and college, South Dakota State before joining the National Guard and subsequently the Army Air Corps in January 1941. He was rated for flying 26 different aircraft, both fighters and bombers.
He remained an active reservist until 1973, commanding different reserve units at both Hamilton and Mather Air Force bases.
Mr. Stenson was in the banking business, first with his father in Colome and later with Morris Plan Savings and Loan. He retired in 1975 as vice president for planning at the corporate level in San Francisco.
He was active with Boy Scouts, Rotary, Optimists, SIRS and Knights of Columbus, holding various offices and receiving numerous awards and recognition.
Mr. Stenson is survived by his wife of 62 years Vera of Elk Grove; his children, Bill Jr. and wife Val of Sacramento, Dick and wife Doreen of Forest Grove, Ore., Ann Corson and husband Craig of Walnut Creek, Jim of Rocklin and Bob of San Francisco; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was the brother of Betty Nance, DeEtte Elliott, Bayone Meyer and Randall, Stan and Doug Stenson.
The rosary will begin at 6 p.m. today (Wednesday) at South East Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove. Funeral services are Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 9961 Elk Grove-Florin Road.

Lillian Chesanow
Lillian Uttal Chesanow, a former resident of Elk Grove, died Dec. 27, 2006 in Sacramento of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 102 years old.
Mrs. Chesanow was born Oct. 27, 1904 in Newark, N.J. to Sol and Rose Uttal. She grew up there and in Brooklyn, N.Y., and was the head of the bookkeeping department for a New York bank.
In 1930 she married Dr. Albert Chesanow and they moved to Kearny, N.J. where he worked at the West Hudson Hospital. In 1935 they moved to Great Barrington, Mass. where he established a medical practice. Mrs. Chesanow stayed there until 1996 when, at the age of 92, she moved to Elk Grove to live with her son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Sheila Chesanow.
Mrs. Chesanow was active in the local and county chapters of Hadassah, and the Order of the Eastern Star, and was a volunteer at the Mason Library. She raised a Victory Garden during World War II and won ribbons at the fair for her preserves, her sewing and knitting. At age 90 she traveled to needlework conventions to improve her skills.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brother Benjamin Uttal, and sister Diana Ruiz.
Mrs. Chesanow is survived by her children Dr. Robert Chesanow and wife Jeanne of Cheshire, Conn., and Daniel Chesanow and wife Sheila now of Athens, Tenn.; and grandchildren Linda Rose Chesanow of Punta Gorda, Fla., Marc Chesanow of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Loren Chesanow and wife Sari of Sunrise, Fla., Andrew Chesanow of Cheshire, and Matthew Chesanow and wife Dawn of Southington, Conn.
She was the great-grandmother of Carson, Caleb, Aiden and Maddelyn Chesanow of Southington; and is also survived by former daughter-in-law Kathy Chesanow of Norwalk, Ohio.
Remembrances may be made to the Lillian Chesanow Literacy Fund, Mason Library, 231 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
Funeral arrangements are by Finnerty & Stevens, Great Barrington.

Joseph Edward Elston
Joseph Edward Elston died on May 2, 2006 surrounded by his family. Joe was born Sept. 13, 1943 in Spokane, Wash. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 –1965. On Oct. 16, 1965 he married Sharon Eileen Lippert.
After their wedding, Joe and Shari moved to San Jose,  Calif. where Joe worked for Hewlett-Packard, holding various positions there for 35 years. Joe donated much of his free time to the Bethel Church in San Jose, using vacation time on missions around the world to build churches. In 1989 Joe and Shari moved to Elk Grove,  Calif., to help start the Harvest Church. He served there in many capacities for the next 16 years, taking an official position in 2000.
Joe is survived by his three children; daughter Renee, of Phoenix, and her husband Dan; son Scott, of San Jose; and daughter Erynn, of Elk Grove, and her husband Huston; his wife Sharon, also of Elk Grove; his parents, Thelma and Bill Lampley, of Poulsbo, Wash.; his brother, Don Elston; and sisters Patty Skaftun; Marci Bursch; and Verna McCulloch; and six grandchildren. Services were scheduled to be held on Thursday at Harvest Church.

Corene Cecil
Funeral services will take place today (Dec. 22) for Corene Cecil of Wilton who died Dec. 16, 2006 at the age of 90.
Mrs. Cecil was born in  Oklahoma and lived in Wilton for the past 60 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, John Cecil; son Troy Cecil and granddaughter Terry Lynn Cecil.
Surviving her are children Neoma Yount and husband Don, George Cecil and wife Marge, Daisy Rose and Juanita Hinsz; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation is after 9 a.m. today followed by the service at 11 a.m. in Elk Grove Funeral Chapel, 9101 Elk Grove Blvd. Interment will follow in South East Lawn Memorial Park, 9189 East Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove.
Remembrances may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 2720 Gateway Oaks Drive, Sacramento, CA 95827.

John Loof
John Albert Loof, a resident of Elk Grove for the past 20 years, died Dec. 16, 2006 at the age of 84.
Mr. Loof was a native of San Francisco and a graduate of St. Mary’s College. He was a U.S. Navy officer, a veteran of World War II and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Tom Burton.
Mr. Loof is survived by his wife of 58 years, Cathy Loof; children Terry Clark Burton and John Loof and wife Barbara; and grandchildren Amy, Ryan, Julie and Danny, all of Elk Grove.
A Mass of Christian burial was held Dec. 21 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Elk Grove with private inurnment in the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, Dixon. Remembrances may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 4604 Roseville Road, Suite 100, North Highlands, CA 95660.
Arrangements were by Elk Grove Funeral Chapel.

Edna Sperry
A memorial gathering and celebration of the life of Edna  Johnson Sperry will be held Saturday, Feb. 17. Mrs. Sperry, Elk Grove’s first female Citizen of the Year, died Feb. 10, 2007 at the age of 101.
She was born and raised in Sacramento and graduated from Stanford University in 1928. She married Willard C. Sperry, a high school friend and Stanford classmate and the family lived in Elk Grove for many years, raising their three children here.
Mr. Sperry was the owner of Sperry Motor Co., Elk Grove’s Ford dealership, selling it in 1957 to Lyle Meyer.
Both were active in the community with Mrs. Sperry concentrating on those organizations involving her children. These included the Mothers Club in connection with the Elk Grove schools, Brownies and Girl Scouts. She was also active with the Red Cross, the Elk Grove Service Committee and Stanford Women’s Club of San Joaquin County, and chaired the Elk Grove chapter of the Salvation Army.
She was the last surviving charter member of the Elk Grove Book Club, founded in 1937 and still in existence today. She enjoyed working in the library and had a lifelong love of golf.
For her many contributions to the community, Elk Grove named her its Citizen of the Year in 1962. She was the first woman to receive this honor.
In the late 1960s, with their children grown, the Sperrys moved to Lodi.
Her family characterized Mrs. Sperry as a wonderful role model and tireless volunteer who possessed an insatiable desire to learn, a keen wit and an ever-present twinkle in her eye.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982.
Mrs. Sperry is survived by her children, Willard Sperry and wife JoAnne of Anghiari, Italy, David Sperry and wife Gale of Los Altos, and Marion Robertson and husband James of San Francisco; five grandchildren, Will, Kurt, Rob, Laura and Alex; and four great-grandsons.
Saturday’s service begins at 10 a.m. at O’Connor  Woods Garden Oaks, the retirement home where Mrs. Sperry spent her later years. It is located at 3334 Wagner Heights Road, Stockton.
Remembrances may be made to the Salvation Army or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
