Mignonne T. Hodnett
Passed away peacefully at the home of her oldest son and his wife in Chico, Ca on the 14th of December 2006.
Mignonne was born to one of the oldest continuing farm families in Michigan on May 18, 1921. She was the last generation to work a farm that had been in the same family for over 200 years and has a family history in the US dating back to the mid 1600’s. She had the privilege of living in a time where she saw the advent of electricity, indoor plumbing, the automobile and gas driven farm equipment. She was part of the “Greatest Generation” that saw the spread of the auto & aircraft for common transportation, the Great Depression, WWII, Korea, Viet Nam, and numerous wars in the Middle East. The rise of the middle class in the US as well as the advent of the computer age and the dawn of the Space Age all happened during her lifetime.
Shortly after the start of WWII she moved to Detroit, Michigan, quitting college to do so, to work as the quintessential “Rosie the Riveter” in support of the war effort. She met her husband, Howard, on a blind date, in Detroit shortly after he was discharged from the Army at the end of the war. They were married on her family’s farm outside Lansing, Michigan. They lived on the farm until shortly after the birth of their first child, Ken and then moved to Dallas,  Texas, where Howard opened a photography business, and to be near his mother. They then moved to Los Angeles where Howard, with the help of his Father, was able to find a career in the aerospace industry for the next 20 yrs. While in L.A., they had their daughter, Cirrue and another son, Jim and lived there until the late 60’s before moving to Chico and purchasing Johnny’s Lock & Safe in 1968. She and Howard, along with their two sons operated Johnny’s for over 18 years. In the mid 1980’s, they finally sold the locksmithing business and retired in Chico.
Mignonne is survived by her three children; Ken Hodnett of Chico, Cirrue Horn, and Jim Hodnett both of Palisade, CO; her four grandchildren, Tyler Hodnett of the US Air Force, Jillian Hodnett and Megan Hodnett of Chico, and Delila Katz of Boston. Her grandson Tyler is a third generation veteran of military armed conflict.
