William "Bill" Richardson

William “Bill” Richardson was born September 26, 1923 in Port Carbon, Penn. to Peter and Mary Richardson. He went home to be with Jesus on July 28, 2007 in Paradise, Calif. Bill loved Jesus and took every opportunity to share his love with everyone he met. He served in the Peace Corps, and then joined the Marine Corps. He married Eleanore Sullivan in 1945 and they moved to Pacifica. They were married for 50 years, Eleanore died in 1996. They moved to Paradise in 1978 and then to Chico in 1995. He was active in Full Gospel Men’s Fellowship, he loved to bowl and coached little league for 20 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife Ethel, his daughter; Denyse Gonzales, and son in law Al, granddaughters Michelle Gonzales, Jenna Van Vleck, husband Justin, great grandchildren Maddie, Elliana and Tucker. He was predeceased by children Judy, Jerry & Billy.

Nino Ernest Garcia

Nino E. Garcia, 49, of Chico, passed away at home on August 1st, 2007 surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with cancer. The adopted son of Ernest W. Garcia and Helen Nobles, and birth son of Grace Anderson, Nino was born in Bishop, CA on December 10th, 1957.
Nino had a happy childhood in the high desert of Bishop. His adopted parents showered him with love and affection as he was their only child. Nino enjoyed hiking into the surrounding mountains, camping trips, running cross country and playing tennis in high school and photographing the natural beauty of the area.
Both a gifted photographer and tennis player Nino studied both during his years at Taft College. Winning competitions in both areas.
Nino fell in love with Chico after visiting friends in the early 80’s and moved soon after. As a young man he landed a job at La Force Photography as a lab technician, played drums in community and church bands, and pitched softball with church and CARD leagues. Nino was a kind, nonjudgmental and generous man who loved to help others whenever he could.
Nino is survived by his wife of 10 years, Leah T. McKean, two step-sons David & Benjamin Logue, grandson Calvin Evans Logue, step-daughter Arbor Evans, mother-in-law Viola Bernardo, sisters-in-law Lani Bianco and Sally Logue, brother-in-law Nathan Bernardo and cousin Lucy King.
A memorial service will held in his home at 120 Menlo Way Apt #48 on Thursday August 9th at 6pm.
Joyce Joanne Jones
February 21, 1930 - August 04, 2007

Joyce was born in Kansas, February 21, 1930. She moved around a lot in her younger years finally ending up in California. She became an R.N. in obstetrics. She absolutely loved her profession and dedicated much of her life to being an R.N.; however, not always with babies. In 1972 she moved to Paradise, California where she and a friend, Barbara Boyd owned and operated Bel Air Guest home for the elderly for 20 years. Joyce and business partner Barbara were loving friends for over 40 years.
Joyce’s other obsession was golf, and it was an obsession! Obsession can be defined as a persistent and inescapable preoccupation with an idea or emotion. It can also be defined as an idea which morbidly dominates the mind often resulting in irrational actions. Joyce would certainly agree she fit either definition when it comes to golf. Her passion for golf brought her great pleasure and she was honored as the Bidwell Women’s Golf Club Champion, as well as champion at Paradise Pines Women’s Golf Club.
Joyce is survived by her loving friend Barbara Boyd, niece Kathy Reilly/Nash and her children Ryder and Grady; niece Jean Reilly, and brother-in-law Vin Reilly. Her sister, Charlene Reilly and mother Neva Jones passed away several years ago.
Joyce requested no memorial service. She hoped she would be remembered by her friends as fun to play with and as someone who really loved the game of golf.
Charles Burton Allen
February 10, 1916 - June 25, 2007

Charles Burton Allen passed peacefully from this life on June 25, 2007 in Chandler, Arizona. Charles was born on February 10, 1916 in West Los Angeles to Charles W. Allen and Edna F. Hart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys and their son Frank.
He is survived by his son, Charles M. Allen and daughter, Coral Weston; his brother, Duane Howard of Chico; grandchildren, Chuck, Jason, Jared and Kelly Heath; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Kylene, Jaylene and Isabella.
Charles "Bud" Allen was raised mostly by his mother, Edna in Southern California. In his early twenties he became interested in flying while on a trip to Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, after which he met and married his wife, Gladys. At the beginning of World War II in 1941, Bud transferred his citizenship back to the United States and enlisted in the United States Air Force. His initial training as a fighter pilot began on the East Coast until he was later transferred to Mather Field in Sacramento.
At the time the Chico Airport became a training base for the U.S. Air Force in 1943, Bud was commissioned a Lieutenant and Flight Instructor, and transferred to Chico, training young pilots for combat in BT -13 Trainers and later into Lockheed P-38 Fighter Aircraft. As the war in both Europe and the Pacific Theatre began to draw to a close, the remaining 13 flight instructors were also commissioned to combat. Bud was then a Senior Flight Instructor and promoted to Captain. Capt. C.B. Allen, as he was known, was assigned to lead combat missions in Burma, flying P-38's, P-47's and P-51 's. He survived several crash landings and near fatal crash of a large transport aircraft. He was one of only a few survivors.
Bud was truly a war hero and served our country well. At the end of the war, he was granted an honorable discharge and settled back in Chico with his family for a few years, then later moving to Southern California. To our family, Bud will always be remembered as a loyal and loving husband, father ("Pop") to his son, grandfather and a brother who will always be his hero and life long idol. Even after 91 years it has been hard to let him go and release him to his eternal home. But now we know he is at peace and at rest in the arms of our Lord.
A full military graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, June 30 at 10:00 am at the Chico Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been made through Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
Bernard Warren Slatten

Bernard Warren Slatten
Bernard Warren Slatten (Barney) age 86 passed away Sunday, June 10, 2007 in Paradise CA. He was born April 9, 1921 in Alba, Texas to Claude and Lucy Slatten nee Warren. At a young age he moved with his family to Porterville, CA, were he attended school graduating from Porterville High School in 1936. He later attended U.C. Davis majoring in Entomology and was there when Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec.7, 1941. At that time he was also working on getting his private pilots license. After completing his pilot training in 1942, he joined the Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot serving as a Lieutenant until his honorable discharge in 1946. After returning from military duty, he went to work as an agriculture advisor and salesman for Calif. Chemical Corp. out of Modesto, CA. It was there that he met, the love of his life, Dewie Quigley. They were married on Sept. 10, 1950 in Tracy, CA. After a transfer north by his employer, they resided on an almond ranch just outside of Chico, for over 40 years. After Barney’s retirement from Cal. Chem. Corp., they moved to Paradise. He was preceded in death by his father Claude, mother Lucy, and infant sister Retha. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Dewie Slatten, son Steven Slatten, daughter Susan Miller (Brian), his four grandchildren, Holly Bale (Dan), Brendan Miller (Denikka), Erik Warren Miller, and Katherine Miller, and two great grandchildren, Timothy Bale and Maura Miller. At Barney’s request, no services will be held. Arrangements were handled by Newton-Bracewell Funeral Homes.
Richard Brian Findlay

Richard Brian Findlay, 56, passed away at his home in Forest Ranch, California, the morning of October 19, 2007. A successful entrepreneur and lifelong adventurer, Richard fought a courageous battle with cancer. Every day until his death, his friends and family enjoyed his characteristic sense of humor and were awed by his drive to explore the world.
Richard is survived by his wife, Kati White Findlay, his soul mate and co-captain on their many worldwide adventures.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Richard’s family immigrated to the United States in 1957 when Richard was 6 years old. Settling in Southern California, Richard grew up in Atwater, Alhambra and Arcadia. He attended Emery Park Elementary School, Monrovia High School, Pasadena City College and Cerritos College. His legendary energy and sense of curiosity were evident early in life. His mother remembers that when Rick was still in diapers, he crawled out the first floor window of the house. Next thing she knew, neighbors were calling her to report he was running down the sidewalk, buck naked, moving almost too fast to catch.
Never one to wait for others to keep up with him, Richard started early to develop a self-reliant approach to life. Fascinated with cars, he taught himself car mechanics while still in his teens. One summer, he took a job handling horses at the Del Mar race track to make enough money to buy and restore his first car, a 1957 Chevy. A Mustang and motorcycle soon followed, laying the groundwork to carry out Richard’s lifetime love of transforming driving machines into works of art. . The opportunity to restore a masterpiece came in 1987 when a friend wanted to part with a classic car. Soon after, Richard became the owner of a unique and sought after Aston Martin Shooting Brake Wagon., one of only 12 ever manufactured. Richard restored the car and entered it in the 1989 AMOC Monterey Festival and the 1992 Santa Barbara Concourse d’Elegance, winning a First Place Best of Show, a Judge’s Choice award, and an award created just for him, Most Outstanding Restoration by an Amateur. Richard’s sister remembered that one of her proudest moments was driving the victory lap with Richard at the end of the show in Monterey.
Noting his exceptional mechanical abilities, his father, Walt Findlay, guided Richard into a career as a sheet metal worker with Local 105 in Los Angeles. Apprenticing under his dad, Richard quickly moved through the journeyman level and became one of the youngest foremen in the Union, retiring after a successful career of 25 years.
In his late 20’s, Richard discovered the central passion of his life – sailing. Starting with the purchase of a 37’ Catalina sail boat, Richard taught himself the basics of navigation and honed his skills serving as a crew member on long sailing trips to Mexico and along the coast of California. His diligence and many business ventures paid off in the mid-1990s with the purchase of the legendary 68‘ racing sailboat, “Equation”. On its inaugural voyage, he captained the ship from Florida, through the Panama Canal, to California, with a crew that included his parents and his future wife, Kati. Soon after this voyage, Kati and Richard married in 1997, committed to a shared dream to sail the world.
In the early years of their marriage, they stripped down “Equation” to the aluminum hull, completely rebuilt it, and christened it “Precious Mettle”. In 2004, Kati and Richard embarked on their long-wished-for trip, sailing to ports in Latin America and the South Pacific. Richard and Kati’s families had a chance to share some of life on the open seas going on never-to-be-forgotten trips to Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands. Recently, Kati and Richard visited Greece, Panama, and went on sailing excursions with friends along the Columbia River and to the Inland Passage in Canada.
When on land, Richard continued to work on classic cars. His most recent pride and joy was the restoration of a 1964 Aston Martin DB5 convertible. The DB5 was nearly complete but a few details remain to make this a “perfect” car. Chico friends who shared Richard’s passion for classic cars have offered to help finish his dream.
Richard is remembered for his hard work, love of family, friendliness, independent spirit, wit and always having a joke for any occasion. Most of all, he was a man of many accomplishments who knew what he wanted and could make his dreams come true.
In addition to his wife Kati, Richard was the loving son of Shirley Blackman Bylard of Forest Ranch, California, and of his father and stepmother, Walter and Marcia Findlay of Prescott, Arizona. He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Corrine and Bill Hayes, of Forest Ranch, California; his brother-in-law, Rick, and wife, Sally White, of Washington, D.C.; his sister-in-law, Carol White, of San Francisco, his brother-in-law, Randy White, of Boulder, Colorado; and brother-in-law Peter and wife, Jackie White, of Olympia Washington.
A service in honor of Richard will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 26, at Richard and Kati’s home in Forest Ranch. Friends of the family are invited. For questions or information, please call 530-345-3647. Funeral direction is under the care of Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home.
