Noble, John

Wed, Jan 1, 1997

John H. Noble, 87, of Grass Valley died Sunday at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital.

No services are planned.

He was born Dec. 8, 1909 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to Joseph and Alice (Penfold) Hogan. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Noble worked for Pioneer Telephone Co. in southern California as a lineman and operator for 30 years. He lived many years in Palmdale before moving to Grass Valley, where he lived for 16 years. He was a 69-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed reading and woodworking.

Mr. Noble left no survivors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Noble, in 1979.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary in Nevada City.

Gordon, Byron 12/31

Tue, Dec 31, 1996

Private family services for Byron Edward Gordon, 81, of Penn Valley will be conducted, and his ashes will be scattered at sea.

Mr. Gordon died Thursday in Pismo Beach.

He was born Jan. 21, 1915, in Seattle, Wash., to Henry and Alice (Kroeger) Gordon. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a captain and base adjutant, retiring as a major in 1946.

He had a 48-year career in the title insurance business. He retired as Nevada County manager and vice president of the Inter-County Title Co., headquartered in Nevada City. He served as president of the Grass Valley Rotary and Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the El Dorado County Masonic Lodge. He had lived in Penn Valley for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Helen Lois Gordon; sons James Byron of San Ramon and Jonathan Edward of Pismo Beach; daughter, Donna Davis of Costa Mesa; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie Grace and Harry Godshalk of Sonoma; two grandsons; one granddaughter; and several nephews.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Reis Chapel in San Luis Obispo.

Green , Duane

Tue, Dec 31, 1996

Private family services for Duane Allen Green, 54, of Sacramento will be conducted.

Mr. Green died Thursday in Sacramento.

He was a native of Kooskia, Idaho. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a resident of the Grass Valley area for 25 years, where he worked as a logger.

He is survived by his wife, Karen M. Green; daughter and son-in-law, Nicole and J. Scott Castelo of Las Vegas, Nev.; brother, Edmund Green of Sacramento; sister and brother-in-law Jeraldine and David Cabral of Grass Valley; sister, Alice Oland of Crestwell, Ore.; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of the A.J. Nicoletti Funeral Home in Sacramento.

Kirksey, Edna May

Tue, Dec 31, 1996

Memorial services for Edna May Kirksey of Grass Valley will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Fellowship Church, which meets at Lyman Gilmore School in Grass Valley.

Mrs. Kirksey died Dec. 24 at her home. She was 67.

She was born Aug. 6, 1929, in San Francisco to Harry and Martha Sherratt. She married Robert H. Kirksey on April 4, 1950. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time at the ocean and in the mountains.

She is survived by her sons John W. Kirksey of Grass Valley and Gary R. Kirksey of Hawaii; brothers Robert Sherratt and Jack Sherratt, both of California; sisters Mamie Verbart of California and Margaret Block of Illinois; and three grandchildren. Her husband, Robert H. Kirksey, died in 1987.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.

Clark M. Drummond

Veteran, former professional roller skater

Clark M. Drummond, 78, passed peacefully from this life on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at his home in Pine Grove.

Mr. Drummond was born on Sept. 18, 1924, in Manitoba, Canada.

He served in the Canadian Navy during World War II on a Corvette escorting convoys across the Atlantic.

For 14 years, he worked for the Canadian National Railroad (CNR) prior to moving to California in 1956.

He worked for American Can Company in Oakland as a tool and dye maker and retired after 32 years.

He was a professional skater performing roller skating demonstrations. He and his wife competed and performed as a team beginning in 1945.

In 1988, he moved to Pine Grove and became an active in member of the Seniors in Retirement (SIR), branch 96 and the SIR RV group. He was noted for his willingness to take on any responsibility when asked. Friends and neighbors admired his skills as both an artist and woodworker.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine “Kay” Drummond of Pine Grove; sons, Ronald Drummond of Newark, and Glenn Drummond of Walnut Creek; daughter, Phyllis Remer of Napa; brothers, Clare Drummond in Canada and Jim Drummond in Minnesota; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. at McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove. Inurnment will be private at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell. Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Amador, P.O. Box 595,  Jackson 95642, or the Kiwanis Family House, P.O. Box 152,  Jackson 95642.

Mildred Cora Nichols Tye

75-year member Order of the Eastern Star

Mildred Cora Nichols Tye, 96, died on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, in Sacramento.

She was a born in 1906 in Sacramento.

For 75 years, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Queen Esther in Chapter Sutter Creek.

She is survived by her step-daughter, Doloros Weiss and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence R. Nichols.

At her request, no service will be held. Arrangements were handled by George L. Klumpp Chapel of Flowers in Sacramento.
