Barbara Jean Fowler

Barbara Jean Fowler, 74, died on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at her home in Volcano. She was born on July 11, 1928, in Omaha, Neb.

At her request there will be no service. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Robert “Bob” Cleveland Settlage

Robert “Bob” Cleveland Settlage, 58, died on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in Sutter Creek.

Mr. Settlage was born May 25, 1944, in Whittier. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Friday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ in Jackson. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1212 West Robinhood Dr., Ste. 5D, Stockton 95207, or the charity of the donor’s choice.

Fabian John Alexander

Fabian John Alexander, 42, died on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002, at his home in Volcano.

He was born on March 12, 1960, in Mineola, N.Y.

Services are pending.

Virginia Allene Ray Waldren Fannin

Virginia Allene Ray Waldren Fannin, 82, formerly of Sutter Creek and Springfield, Mo., died on Monday, March 1, 2004, at Harris Methodist H.E.B. Hospital in Bedford,  Texas. Services were held on Friday, March 5 at Greenlawn Funeral Home North. Interment was at Lindley Prairie Cemetery in Bear Creek, Mo.

Lance Corporal Jeremy M. Lindroth, USMC

Jeremy Michael Lindroth, 23, gave his life for our country and died in a plane crash during a training mission on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar near San Diego.

Cpl. Lindroth was born on Nov. 29, 1980, in Fargo, N. D. and was a 1999 graduate from Argonaut High School in Jackson. After attending one year of college, he enlisted in the Marine Corps in July of 2001. He was active in the Scouts while he was living in Amador County.

Jeremy reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in February 2002 for boot camp and followed up by attending the School of Infantry at Marine Corps Base in Camp Pendleton. He then attended school at Naval Aviation Maintenance Training Activity, Marine Unit, MCAS Camp Pendleton where he was designated a helicopter mechanic.

He selected to be stationed at Headquarters Squadron, MCAS Miramar in December 2002 where he earned his wings and archived the status of a qualified C-12 crew chief and was in training to be a crew chief on the UC-35. He received the National Defense Medal, Two Certificates of Commendation and was the subject of a Meritorious Mast.

He is survived by his parents, Tin and Joel Lindroth of Ione; and his brothers and sister, Michel, Matthew, Jacob and Chelsea Lindroth. He will be loved and remembered by all who knew him.

A memorial service was held on March 15 at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station Memorial Chapel. A private family service took place in Ione earlier this week. Inurnment will be at his family’s resort home in Minnesota at a later date.

Elmer Harold Cook

Elmer Harold Cook, 98, died on Monday, March 22,2004 at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson. Mr. Cook was born on May 13, 1905, in Prunedale.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 30 from noon to 5 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, March 31 at 1 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Pine Grove. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Condolences may be offered to the family at daneri@cdepot.net.

Timothy W. Lewis

Timothy W. Lewis, 61, died on Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his home in Pine Grove.

Mr. Lewis was born in Yreka on May 29, 1942.

All services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Paul John Cavagnaro

Paul John Cavagnaro, 36, died on Friday, March 26, 2004, in a Modesto Hospital.

Mr. Cavagnaro was born on Oct. 20, 1967, in  Jackson to Raymond and Rosemarie Cavagnaro of Ione.

Visitation was held and the rosary was recited on Tuesday, March 30, at St. Andrews Catholic Church in San Andreas.

Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 31, at 10 a.m. at the same location. Interment will be at the Campo Seco Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by San Andreas Memorial Chapel in San Andreas.

Monica Maxine Phipps Johns

Monica Maxine Phipps Johns, 89, known affectionately as “Max” to Rancho Murietans, died Monday, March 15, 2004, at the Rancho Murieta home of her daughter, Maggie Linden.

Mrs. Johns was born on March 13, 1915, to Avery and Leonia Phipps in Elwood, Ind. She attended Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. and graduated with degrees in nursing and teaching.

She became a public health nurse in Indiana until enlisting in the U. S. Army and serving as a nurse and a trained pilot. Her Army career took her with General Patton’s army across Europe. During her war service, she reconnected with Daniel Johns, a childhood acquaintance who was in the U. S. Navy.

After the war, the couple married in 1946, in Las Vegas. Max followed her husband on his military assignments across the United States, before they settled in Hayward in 1955 and she resumed her teaching career.

In 2002, she moved to Rancho Murieta to live with her daughter. She was an avid golfer and more recently enjoyed playing bridge at the Rancho Murieta Country Club. She will be remembered for being thoughtful and always generous.

She is survived by her daughters, Maggie Linden of Rancho Murieta, Emi  Johnson of Jackson; grandchildren, Evan  Johnson of San Diego, Keith  Johnson attending Indiana University and Mja Theismeyer of Los Angeles; great-grandchildren, Nina and Erik Theismeyer. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Daniel Johns.

An open house will be held Saturday, April 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. at 15042 Reynosa Drive in Rancho Murieta. Inurnment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. Condolences may be offered to the family at daneri@cdepot.net.

Dr. Robert L. Magoffin

Dr. Robert L. Magoffin, 81, passed away peacefully in his home on March 27, 2004.

He had been a resident of  Jackson since 1980, when he retired here after serving 26 years as a Public Health officer for the state of California.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1922, the fourth son of Ida B. and George A. Magoffin, in Fort Worth,  Texas, where he grew up.

He graduated from  Texas Christian University where he met his wife, Dorothy Anne Hartung. Entering the Navy in 1944, he went to the University of  Texas were he obtained his medical degree.

After his internship in Internal Medicine at University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis, he obtained a Masters of Public Health.

During the Korean War, he was assigned to an Epidemiology unit.

In 1954, he started his career as an Epidemiologist for the California State Health Department in Berkeley where he participated in the field studies of the polio vaccine and other newly recognized viruses.

In 1970, he became Assistant Chief of the State Viral Disease Laboratory, helping oversee research programs in respiratory, central nervous system and cancer virology.

Dr. Magoffin authored or co-authored 45 published papers on viral disease, several of which have appeared in medical textbooks.

During his retirement in Jackson, he enjoyed spending time working on his ranch, raising goats and traveling to places of historical or personal interest. He especially loved listening to his large collection of classical music and reading a biography or the Wall Street Journal. Drives into the surrounding countryside or a picnic or a walk were a weekly tradition.

His love of nature and appreciation for the outdoors were one of the many legacies he passed to his children. He and Dorothy always made their home a special place for his beloved family to visit.

Dr. Magoffin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; four children, Betsy Langley (Mike Decker) of Eagle, Idaho, Marilyn Magoffin (Ron Stark) of Mendocino, Bart Magoffin (Chris) of El Dorado Hills; David Magoffin (Katherine) of Rocklin; four grandchildren, Rachel and Monica Magoffin of Rocklin, Lauren and Tim Magoffin of El Dorado Hills and six step-grandchildren, Stacy (Decker) Smith, Brian Decker and Megan (Decker) Willis of Boise, Idaho, Christily Silvernale of Panama City, Fla., Josha Stark and Claire Stark of Sebastopol.

A short memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 1, in the meadow at the Magoffin home, 17715 Butte Mountain Cutoff at 1 p.m., (weather permitting), followed by a gathering at the Milligan School, 17586 Clinton Road. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson. His final resting place will be in the Garden of Golden Memories at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Amador, P.O. Box 595,  Jackson 95642, or the Senior Center Foundation, P.O. Box 111,  Jackson 95642.
