Dorothy DesRochers Jackson

Oct. 30, 1910 - Dec. 23, 2004

Dorothy DesRochers Jackson, 94, of Pine Grove, died on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 in Sutter Creek.

She was born to William and Jennie Poirier of Houghton, Mich., on Oct. 30, 1910. She graduated from Houghton High School in 1929 and was then employed by Haas Brewery.

In 1939, she married Raymond DesRochers and they were residents of Arnheim, Mich., for several years. Raymond passed away in 1977.

In 1983, she married John W.  Jackson of Mohawk, Mich. and following his death in 1993, she remained a resident of Mohawk, later moving to California with her daughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Vazquez and her husband, Dr. Macario Vazquez of Pine Grove; grandson, Greg Hietunen of Monterey; granddaughter, Tara and her husband Michael Rice; great-grandchildren, Ava Jane and Brendan Rice, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepson, Paul and his wife Betty of Orange and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Ann; two sisters and three brothers.

Rosary was recited on Monday, Dec. 27 and Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Volcano.

There will be a graveside service and spring burial at the Forrest Hill Cemetery in Houghton, Mich. Arrangements are being handled by McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

John Brosz

July 14, 1932 - Dec. 23, 2004

John Brosz, 72, of Pioneer, died on Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004 at Sutter Amador Hospital in Jackson.

He was born in Gackle, N. D. on July 14, 1932. He attended school in North Dakota and came to California in 1956. He worked for Aerojet in Rancho Cordova and for PG&E at Tiger Creek until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Adella Brosz of Pioneer; sons, Mark Brosz of Pioneer, Steve Brosz of Ione; brothers, Elmer Brosz of Sacramento, Joseph Brosz of Elk Grove; sister, Martha Zenker of Elk Grove; and three grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday, Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. at the New Life Christian Center, 87 West Ridge Road, Sutter Hill. Arrangements were entrusted to McCrory’s Funeral Home in Pine Grove.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 796, Sutter Creek 95865.

Elgin Ray Bowers, Jr.

Aug. 10, 1919 - Dec. 27, 2004

Elgin Ray Bowers, Jr., 85, of Sutter Creek, passed away on Monday, Dec. 27, 2004 in Jackson.

Mr. Bowers was born on Aug. 10, 1919 in Lockhart,  Texas to Elgin Ray and Nellie Mae (Blackwell) Bowers.

Elgin married Carolyn “Sis” Allen, a native of Sutter Creek, on Dec. 8, 1945.

He attended  Texas A & I University for three and a half years prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps on April 24, 1942 to begin a distinguished military service. He was trained as a pilot and flew more than 800 hours in a B26 over Germany, France, England and the United States. Participating in 68 combat missions which included those on D-Day, he totaled more than 200 hours and commanded a crew of seven men which included four officers. In addition, he flew a total of 1,200 hours in B25, A26, C47, C45 and P38 aircrafts.

Elgin was awarded many decorations including the American Theater Service Medal; European African and Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Distinguished Flying Cross; GO 268 9th AF44; the Air Medal with 10 Oak Leaf Cluster; GO 144 HQ344 Bomb Group 44; World War II Victory Medal and six letters of commendation. He was honorably discharged on March 14, 1946.

Back in Amador County, Elgin operated one of the first backhoes in construction in the county until 1962.

In 1962, on a hunting trip to the Ruby Mountains in Nevada, he was accidentally shot and was hospitalized in Elko, Nev., for more than nine months. Returning to Amador, he later served as Amador County Supervisor for District 4, from 1965 until 1972. He then continued to cattle ranch until his passing.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn Bowers; daughter, Carolynne B. Plamondon; son Elgin Robert Bowers all of Sutter Creek; grandchildren, Cassidy Costa, Natausha Plamondon, Daniel Bowers, Tara Bowers, Amber Eastland; great-granddaughter, Abbigail Costa; and sister, Joyce Elbel of New Braunfels,  Texas and her three sons and their children.

At the family’s request, there will be no service. Inurnment will be private. Arrangements were handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Jane A. Nelson

Oct. 15, 1927 - Dec. 24, 2004

Jane A. Nelson, 77, died on Friday, Dec. 24, 2004 at her home in Pioneer.

Mrs. Nelson was born on Oct. 15, 1927 to Paul and Helen Lupien in Natick, Mass. Jane married Robert Nelson on May 17, 1952 in Malden, Mass. She worked as a medical secretary for 10 years and made Amador County her home for 17 years.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dr. Robert Nelson of Pioneer; daughter, Paula Cruz of Monterey; grandchildren, Janie O’Toole, Casey O’Toole, Paul Monson, Sarah Cruz; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela O’Toole.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. at Daneri Mortuary Chapel in Jackson. Entombment will be in the Keystone Wing of the Mausoleum at Sunset View Cemetery in Martell. Arrangements are being handled by Daneri Mortuary in Jackson.

Dorothy “Dot” Dodson

May 21, 1950 - Jan. 18, 2005

Dorothy “Dot” Dodson, 54, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a three year courageous battle with cancer, on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005 at her Mace Meadow home in Pioneer.

Mrs. Dodson was born on May 21, 1950 in Hayward to Tom and Mary Alford.

She was employed for 30 years by Pacific Bell Telephone where she had been instrumental in implementing many of the features offered by phone companies today. She retired from there and moved to Mace Meadow Golf Course in Pioneer with her husband, Rod.

Dot loved golf and became a member of The Fairway Ladies Golf Club at Mace Meadow Golf Course and was always ready to donate her time to charitable events.

She is survived by her husband, Rod Dodson; daughter, Lisa and son, Todd; six grandchildren, Jake, Kira, T.J., Kylee, Logan and Clayton; her parents; brother, Tommy; sisters, Jean and Joan.

She will be greatly missed.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 3 at noon at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Pioneer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1765 Challenge Way, Ste. 115, Sacramento 95815 or Hospice of Amador, P.O. Box 595,  Jackson 95642.
