Homer Lloyd Slaten
91, native of Hot Springs, Arkansas, passed on June 1, 2003, in Deer Park.
He came to San Bernardino,  Calif., in 1944 from San Pedro and was a grocery clerk for 30 years.
Homer served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and received the rank of Tec. 5.
"He was a fisherman from way back" and always kept the secret of his fishing spot.

Nancy J. Leasure
66, passed May 27, 2003, at her home in Big Bear City after a brief illness.
Born April 17, 1937, Nancy was a life-long resident of Southern California, born in Santa Monica, as were both her children.
A resident of Big Bear Valley for 6 years, she loved the mountains and animals.
Nancy was always giving a dog or cat a home and work with animal rescue.
Nancy also lived a short time in New Hampshire while her children were educated.
Nancy is survived by her loving family, daughter Alice J. Leasure of Big Bear City; son Robert Philbirck of New Hampshire; sister Judith Graham of California granddaughter Emily of New Hampshire and 2 nieces, Jennifer and Cindy.
Memorial services will be held at Gold Mountain Memorial Park, Big Bear City,  Calif., Sunday, May 8, 2003, at 12 p.m. Big Bear Mortuary, directors.

Lucinda Marie Zavas
39, passed December 13,2003. Born March 23, 1964, Lucinda lived in the San Bernardino mountains for 39 years. She loved children and did foster care with the prison industry. She is a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.
Lucinda is survived by her mother, Patricia Lee Rosas of Herperia; husband, Robert LeeRoy Zavas of Crestline; sons, Adam Anthong Zavas of Victorville, Paul Michael Zavas of Nevada and Robert Zavas of Crestline; daughters, Chelsea Zavas of Upland, and Lucinda, Aushalay, and Kay Zavas, all of Crestline; brother, Troy Anthony Pacheco of Big Bear City; sisters, Denise Fred of Yucaipa, Sandra Koslolansky of Big Bear Lake, Jimmi Stickels of Hesperia, Jo Dee Rosser of Bloomington and Tammy Elliot of Alabama.
Services will be held Thursday, December 18, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Chapel of Big Bear, Big Bear Lake. Big Bear Mortuary, directors.

Kathryn Linda Sanchez
55, passed July 19, 2003. Born December 26, 1947, Linda was the 'Olde Lady of Sugarloaf.' She often spoke of "sitt'n on the front porch with my hound dawgs watchen them turists go by staren at us thinkin we all a bunch of hillbillies. She was a mountain woman through and through. She always wanted to "play the part," and she did so that the company she was in would be comfortable. She wanted people to feel free enough to be themselves.
Linda gave till it hurt. There are many "kids" that will miss their second mom. She has extended family beyond marriage or other legalities that increased her 'children count' tenfold.
Linda is survived by her four children: Deaun, Dani, Ralph and Joseph; grandchildren, Amanda, Jennifer, Donnivan (preceded in death), Sunshine, William, Justin, Tyler, Joey, Gyspi, Alexandrea; and her brother Kevin Dobbs.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2003, noon, at Gold Mountain Memorial Park, Big Bear City,  Calif. Big Bear Mortuary, directors.

Ralph "Gordon" Rogers
72, passed July 19, 2003, in Big Bear City,  Calif. Born February 23, 1931 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, Gordon was a Valley resident for 8 years and a member of the American Legion, the Elks Lodge and the Moose Lodge.
Gordon is survived by his wife Rose Marie of Big Bear City; sons Michael "Mike" of Nevada and James "Jimmy" of Big Bear City; daughters Joyce Holmes of Valley Center and Gail Noyes of Santa Monica; brothers Bill and Raymond of Nevada; sisters Shirley Cormier of Alabama and Pat Schulder of Arizona; and grandchildren Justin Holmes, Emily and Brain Rogers.
Services will be held Thursday, July 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Big Bear Mortuary Chapel, Big Bear City,  Calif. Big Bear Mortuary, directors.

Richard "Rich" Thomas Arden
51, passed July 20, 2003, in Big Bear City,  Calif. Born March 8, 1952, in Mesa, Arizona, Rich was a resident of Big Bear Valley for 35 years. A giant man, giant hearted and the best of everything, he was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother and friend.
He is survived by his grandma Rea of Apple Valley; sons Christian of Citrus Heights and Rhett of Big Bear City; daughter Patricia Andrea Hover of Victorville; brothers John of Big Bear City and Arthur of Redding; grandchildren Sarah, Madyson and Emma. Richard was preceded in death by his mother and father George "Blackie" and Ilene; son Paul; brothers Gene and Roger and sister Janie.
Visitation will be held Friday, July 25, 2003 at 10 a.m. followed by services at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Big Bear City,  Calif. Big Bear Mortuary, directors.

Ila NaVeaux
82, passed January 15, 2004 at the Desert Valley Medical Center. She was born October 21, 1922, in Los Angeles,  Calif., was an active member of the Big Bear Senior Center, and loved these precious mountains and its people. Her husband, Cliff, a retired flight engineer with TWA, who preceded her in death in 1990, decided to make Big Bear their retirement home having had their vacation home here since 1958.
Ila is survived by her daughters Donna Schindele and Deborah Harder; son Kent NaVeaux; and sister-in-law Virginia Wright.
Services will be held January 24 at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale,  Calif., at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Shriners Hospital, 316 Geneva St., Los Angeles, CA 90020.

Thomas E. Blyler
68, passed July 15, 2003, in Loma Linda,  Calif. Born January 28, 1935 in Altoona, PA. Tom and wife Vilma moved to California in 1960 and to Big Bear in 1997. Tom was self employed, a general contractor and master cabinetmaker. He is survived by his wife Vilma of Big Bear; mother Bertha and sister Ellen of Williamsburg, PA; sister Carolyn of Fairport, New York; son Jess of Redlands, daughter Nyla and son Tim of Big Bear and grandchildren Tommy, Jessica, Lauren, Lela and Michael. Tom was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and devoted his life to God and helping others. He will be missed by so many. A memorial service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, 255 Catalina in Big Bear Lake at 2 p.m. on July 26.

Eloise Florence Paulson
71, passed January 17, 2004, in Vista,  Calif. Born August 19, 1932, in Los Angeles, she loved nature and fishing and found her little bit of heaven in Big Bear with her beloved husband, Wayne, who preceded her in death December 6, 2003. Only a five-year resident, Eloise is survived by her daughter, Karen Denise Paulson of New Mexico; son, Jeffery Wayne Paulson of Oceanside; grandchildren Amber Lenore Paulson and David Michael Paulson Cahall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Moonridge Animal Park. Private family services were held with Big Bear Mortuary, directors.

HELGA MARTIN
Helga Erna Alice Martin born in Germany 78 years ago passed away in Big Bear,  Calif., on the evening of Thursday, 25 September.
Helga is survived by her husband, Norm Martin, and niece, Christa Holrieder and many close friends who will miss her dearly.
Helga and Norm have lived in Big Bear since 1985 and have been active members of the community.
A memorial to be arranged will be held at the Shepherd in the Pines Lutheran Church by Pastor Gene Smith.
No flowers please - Donations to City of Hope.

Jacques Ovellet
51, passed July 15, 2003, in Big Bear City,  Calif. Born August 20, 1951, in the Canadian providence of Quebec, Jacques, at the age of 17, joined the Canadian Ice Capades tour group and performed all over world as an Ice Dancer. Upon retirement due to an injury, Jacques became involved in the food industry and was the manager for Sizzler on Vermont Ave. in Los Angeles, winning numerous awards as the number one Sizzler in the nation.
Missing the four seasons, Jacques moved to Big Bear in 1996 where realizing the need for food delivery, he opened the Valley's Food Taxi in 1997, delivering for Mandarin Gardens, Sonora Cantina, Pongs, Boo Bear's and many other fine restaurants throughout the Valley. A quiet man, Jacques was known to many simply as the "Delivery Man" and probably visited two-thirds of the Valley homes through the years.
He is survived by his brother Michele of Quebec, Canada. Funeral arrangements and services are pending.
