Mr. Ramon (Ray) Yanci, a lifelong resident of Yolo County, passed away on Sunday, July 3, at Woodland Memorial Hospital. Born on November 20, 1923, in Winters, California, to Natalio (Nate) and Manuela Yanci, he was 81 years old.
Ray attended the one-room Cottonwood Elementary School in Western Yolo County, and graduated from Esparto High School with the Class of 1942. He was a sheep and cattle rancher in Western Yolo County until retirement when he moved back to Winters. Ray was a life member of the Woodland Elks Lodge #1299, and a more than 50 year member of the Yolo County Wool Growers and Cattlemanís Association. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents Natalio and Manuela Yanci, and his wife Lita Yanci.
He is survived by Sister Marie Yanci of Woodland, and his brother Joseph Yanci and his wife Pat of Woodland. He is further survived by his step-children; John A. Martinez and his wife Robin of Lincoln, CA., Betty Ann Biasi of Winters, and Patti Gottlieb and her husband Greg of Roseville. Ray was the proud grandfather of Sam Biasi and his wife Anne of Petaluma, Lori Fellows and her husband Turk of Esparto, John F. Martinez of Happy Camp, Jennifer Martinez of Concord, Paul Gottlieb and his wife Shekina of Roseville, and Amy Gottlieb of Roseville. His great grandchildren are Anthony and Sarah Biasi of Petaluma, Tyler, Tanner and Tate Fellows of Esparto. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Dolores Gregg and her husband Bill of Sacramento and Josie Mermod and her husband Jack of San Leandro.
The rosary will be recited on Sunday, July 10 at 7:00 PM at St. Anthony Catholic Church, located on the corner of 3rd & Main Streets in Winters. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 11, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Winters Cemetery. Remembrances may be made in Mr. Yanciís name to the American Cancer Society or the Woodland Memorial Hospital Home Healthcare Program, 261 California Street, Woodland, CA 95695. Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel in Davis.
Daisy Marie Pierce (Mermod) passed away on June 28, 2005. She was born on Aug. 9, 1919 and was married for 60 years to Jack Pierce. She was the daughter of Horace and Rosa Mermod. Daisy worked for the federal government for over 50 years, retiring in 1983. She graduated from Winters High School in 1937 and Western Business School.
She is survived by her brother, Jack Mermod; her sister, Mae Dickens; also by her nieces and nephews Renee Borenstein, Bruce Kalin, Michele Zemech, Denise Rainey and Jack K. Mermod, plus many grand-nieces and nephews, and six great-grand nieces and nephews.
Cremation will be held at the Winters Cemetery
at a later date. No services will be held.
Robert J. Pendergast passed away on June 30, 2005. A native of Truckee and a lifetime resident of Sacramento, he was 87 years old. He retired from the S.P.R.R. as the General Yard Master, where he worked for 35 years. He was also a Captain in the United States Army stationed at Stanford University as a Special Training Officer from 1940 to 1945.
He was the beloved husband of Dorothy; father of Colleen Tufts and her husband, Stan, of Winters, Kerry Anne Pendergast and friend, Miguel, of Lake Tahoe; the late Robert “Bobby” Pendergast and Patrick James Pendergast, brother of the late Gladys Lehtola, Eleanor Matthews, and Edward Pendergast; grandfather of Christine Maligad, Merry Iseley, Robert E. Pendergast, Jr., Patrick Robert Ehrman and Tyler Tufts, also five great grandchildren and he was predeceased by one great granddaughter.
Friends were invited to attend a burial mass for the repose of his soul at St. Joseph’s Chapel, inside St. Mary’s Cemetery, 6700 21st Avenue on Wednesday, July 6 at 10 a.m. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Remembrances may be made in his name to the Sacramento Food Bank, 3333 Third Avenue, Sacramento, CA 95817, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

John H. Eldridge passed away at his residence in Winters on Aug. 30, 2005, following a lengthy illness. He was 84 years old. John was born on Sept. 11, 1920 in San Mateo, to Herbert and Nora (Hardeman) Eldridge. He later married Honoré I. Rowley.
John served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was an avid fan of sporting events, particularly football and rugby, which he loved to play. He had been employed with Pacific Bell Communications and retired following 40 years of dedicated service. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and also of the Farm Bureau. He loved his dogs and his many animals. John had a deep love for his family and his grandchildren had a very special place in his heart. He was an all around good guy and he befriended many.
He is survived by his wife, Honoré Eldridge; sons Michael Eldridge (Alison); and Sean Eldridge (Rosalynd), all of Winters; grandchildren, Jeremy and Dennis Eldridge, of Sacramento, Jessicca and Ciera Eldridge, and Bridgette Eldridge, of Winters; one great grandson, Devin Eldridge, of Sacramento.
He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Steven Eldridge; brother, Walter Eldridge, and sister, Frances West.
A Rosary will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 301 Main Street, Winters. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, Sept. 2, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, with interment to follow in the Winters Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of Davis Funeral Chapel.
Anna Sue (Dozier) Morris passed away at her home in Winters on Aug. 27, 2005, following a very lengthy illness. Born on Feb. 13, 1954, she was 51 years old.
She was a member of Pioneer Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Winters High School. She loved fishing, caring for hummingbirds and yellow roses. She also loved her family and the dear friends who became like family. An incredibly loving person, she valued and revered her friends.
She is survived by her husband of 18 years, E. Paul Morris, of Winters; mother, Margaret Dozier, of Winters; children, Donald F. Jones and Ian Paul Morris, of Winters; brothers Rick Dozier and his wife, Catherine, of Vacaville and Scott Dozier and his wife, Kathy, of Winters; sister Mardi (Dozier) Langdon, and her husband, Peter, of Winters; also by her dearest friend, Trudee Dahringer, of Winters.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, September 10, at 2 p.m. at the Pioneer Presbyterian Church, 205 Russell Street, Winters. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
David F. Storz, 55, passed away in an auto accident on Aug. 8, in Clearlake Oaks, Lake County. Storz was a 1968 graduate of Winters High School and served in the armed services.
The Record-Bee reported that Storz was driving home on Highway 20 when he was struck head-on by 26-year-old Maria Sepulveda of Clearlake. According to the California Highway Patrol, both were killed in the accident.
An unidentified woman riding in Storz’s car, was airlifted to the UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries. According to the CHP report, the collision occurred when Sepulveda inexplicably drove her 1993 Ford Thunderbird into the westbound lane while traveling east. Storz, driving a 1995 Subaru Legacy in the westbound lane, attempted to avoid the collision by braking and swerving to the right, the CHP said, but was struck head-on.
He is survived by his mother, Betty Storz of Fortuna, sister Diane of Seattle, and brother Dennis of Portland. He was proceeded in death by his father Al Storz.
Funeral services were private.
Kathryn Childress Harris died in Davis on Aug. 16, 2005, after a short battle with lung cancer. She was 86 years old.
She was born on Feb. 5, 1919, in Dacusville, South Carolina. Kathryn was the middle child of eight children born to Arevous Brandon Childress and Maurie Hunt Childress. Her father owned a store and farmed 150 acres. Kathryn is remembered by her four remaining siblings as a beautiful woman, full of spunk. She and her sister, Carolyn, sang in the church choir and on the radio. After high school she attended business college and worked for the telephone company in Chesnee, South Carolina across the street from C.J. Harris Furniture & Appliance, owned by her future brother-in-law.
In the summer of 1957, after a three-year military stint in Châteauroux, France and her husband’s subsequent transfer to Travis Air Force Base, Kathryn and family moved to Winters and put down their California roots. In 1964, Kathryn and Kenneth moved to Fairfield, where they would live until their passing. They stayed connected to Winters through their children and friendships established in those early days. Although Kathryn lived in California for almost 50 years, her southern roots were shown in her mild accent, her love for cooking, canning vegetables, pickling, making relish, baking fruitcakes, and gardening, especially roses.
Kathryn is survived by her four sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patty, of Dunnigan, Richard and Susan and George and Robin, of Winters, and Ken and Deena, of Davis; grandchildren, Dawn Van Dyke and her husband, Patrick, Richard Harris, Andrea Harris, Kylie Harris, Quinci Harris, and Elizabeth Kathryn Harris all of Winters; Gabrielle Harris of San Rafael, Bryan Harris of Oceanside, and Reid and Sawyer Harris of Davis. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Lexy and Max Van Dyke, of Winters, and Dakota Harris, of Wallace, North Carolina. She is also survived by four sisters, Virginia Parham, Carolyn Fowler, and Martha Hayes of Greenville South Carolina, and Veda Jackson of Sumter, South Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.
Following a graveside service on Monday, Aug. 22, she was buried in the Winters Cemetery
next to her husband of over 50 years, Kenneth, who passed away in January 2004.
Friends of Kathryn are invited to make donations in her memory to Yolo Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Janet Crum passed away peacefully at her home near Winters, on Aug. 17, 2005 at the age of 80.
Janet was born in Woodland, where her great-grandfather, Joseph H. Harlan, had settled and farmed since 1863. She spent her early years in Woodland and Berkeley, graduating from UC Berkeley in 1946. Janet married her high school sweetheart, Albert. N. Crum, in 1947. Together they raised four children. Janet was a consummate homemaker, sustaining her family as they lived in Oakland, Berkeley, New Orleans and Clayton, CA.
Janet retired to the beloved Winters area farm of her grandparents, Joseph L. and Mabel S. Harlan, and parents William A. and Helen Harlan Chick, in 1981. She cherished family get-togethers and enthusiastically shared family history. To honor her family heritage of farming in the Woodland area, Janet contributed to the Heidrick Ag History Center.
Janet was ever thoughtful, generous, and unpretentious. Others delighted in her company as she so clearly did in theirs. She will be dearly missed.
Janet is survived by her husband of 58 years, Albert; son, Albert; daughters Carol English, Liese Hunter and her husband Craig, and Marianne Moresi and her husband Bill; grandchildren, Justin Crum, Ryan and Christine Edwards, Keith Hunter, Billy and Joshua Moresi; and great-granddaughter Jasmine Edwards. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Will English.
There will be no services, at Janet’s request.
Betty Joyce Gale passed away on Aug. 17, 2005 at her home in Winters, after a brief, yet courageous, battle with lymphoma. She was born on July 23, 1936, in Concord, where at the age of 19, she married Eugene Gale.
The family resided in Winters until 1978, when they moved to the Lake Almanor area. There, Betty worked for 11 years as a computer programmer at Collins Pine Company. She and Eugene returned to Winters in 1999, where Betty enjoyed spending time with her family, as well as crocheting afghans, which she gave as gifts to friends and family. She also donated the afghans to the church. She loved to write poetry, enjoyed musicals, and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a member of St. Anthony’s Parish in Winters and St. Martin’s Altar Society in Esparto.
Betty is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Eugene; parents Ralph and Katherine Johnson, of Rancho Cordova; sons Edward Gale and his fiance, Carolyn Chambers, of Winters, and Christopher Gale and his wife, Brenda, of Knights Landing; daughter Wendy (Gale) Stroud and her husband, Steven, of Brentwood; grandchildren Nicholas and Brannon Gale, of Buckley, Washington, Jessica Gale, of Sacramento, Zachary Gale, of Paradise, Skyler Gale, of Knights Landing and Amie and Steven Stroud, of Brentwood; great-grandson Jonah Reitan, of Sacramento; sisters Sheila (Johnson) Marinelli and her husband, Paul, of Rancho Cordova, and Shirley (Johnson) Warren, and her husband, Robert, of Concord; brother Ralph Johnson, Jr., and his wife, Donna, of Wimberley, Texas.
She is also survived by many other cherished family members, as well as devoted family pet, Danny.
A viewing was held on Monday, Aug. 22, followed by the recitation of the Rosary, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, in Winters. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 23, at St. Anthony Parish Hall, followed by interment at the Winters Cemetery.
